Extended Program Note

[ Posted Tuesday, November 21st, 2023 – 17:01 UTC ]

Since it is a slow news week (pardoning turkeys and whatnot), I thought today would be a good day to bring everyone a site update of sorts. I have started the process of revamping this website, and hope the whole thing will be completed either during the year-end holiday break (very optimistic) or in early 2024 (more realistic). The timeline will depend on how complicated the entire process turns out to be, I should mention.

Due to an unforeseen automotive emergency, there will be no column today. That's a fancy way of saying I spent all day replacing my alternator and doing a few other jobs. But the car's back together, it started right up first try, so columns will resume tomorrow as normal. My apologies for [...]

There will be no column today, as I will be celebrating Labor Day by not doing any. Hope everyone else is having an equally unproductive day!

From The Archives -- Biden Speculation

[ Posted Friday, July 14th, 2023 – 16:00 UTC ]

Vice President Joe Biden certainly has got the media talking. All it really took was one leak to Maureen Dowd and a meeting with Senator Elizabeth Warren, and the recurring story in the media is now: "Biden's son Beau made a deathbed plea to his father to run for president again, and he's now seriously considering it." That's a compelling political narrative, to be sure. The Wall Street Journal is even reporting that Biden's now leaning towards running. Now, I have no inside sources of my own, so I have no idea what's really going on in Biden's head, but no matter how likely it turns out to be, a Biden candidacy bears political examination beyond the simple question of: "Will he or won't he run?"

Due to houseguests arriving unexpectedly early, I regret to announce that there will be no new columns here all week long. I am going to try to spend some time tomorrow setting up re-run columns for the rest of the week (so the site won't be entirely dark), but my original plan of posting [...]

Sorry, there will be no column today. I had to spend a major part of the afternoon cleaning up and repairing some minor storm damage. Don't worry, we only got rain and wind (the snow was up on the mountains) and we weren't even hit particularly badly where we live, but some stuff [...]

As is my wont, I will be watching the State Of The Union speech tonight and then writing my post-speech thoughts and reactions afterwards. But I am not sure I will finish this effort tonight, so I could either post it very late this evening or possibly tomorrow. Just wanted to give everyone [...]

There will be no column today, sorry.
Instead of writing today, I played hooky and went to watch President Joe Biden touring our local disaster areas. Reportedly, the last time a president was in our county was right after the 1989 earthquake, so I guess a big disaster is what it takes....
Anyway, seeing Biden going [...]

Nominations Open For Second Round Of Year-End Awards

[ Posted Friday, December 16th, 2022 – 16:49 UTC ]

I am taking a break from writing tomorrow's article, which will be the first installment of our annual year-end awards, in order to throw open the nominations for the second half, which will run next week (on either Thursday or Friday, we haven't decided -- but the column will be up all of Christmas weekend, so everyone will get a chance to see it).

Nominations Are Open For 2022 Year-End Awards

[ Posted Thursday, December 8th, 2022 – 16:49 UTC ]

'Tis the season once again to solicit nominations for our year-end awards. Welcome to the first round of categories!

Before we get to the list, a few words on the rest of the year's calendar. Tomorrow will be a normal Friday Talking Points day, but it will be the final one of the year. The week after, December 16th, the first year-end awards column will appear.

The following Friday, Christmas Eve Eve, so to speak, the second half of the awards will run. I probably won't be posting new columns the final week of the year, unless something noteworthy enough to demand comment happens (which can always happen).
