There will be no new column today, sorry. The demands of life away from the keyboard intervened, so I had to spend the day running various errands that had been backing up on me. My apologies for the interruption in service, but we will be back again tomorrow for our Friday column, never [...]
This is not really a column, more of a cheerful year-end program note instead, just to let everyone know.
I had every intent of sitting down today to write my annual humor installment reviewing the "banished words" for next year, but the kindly folks at the Lake Superior State University have let me down and it seems they won't be publishing the list today, but are instead waiting until the new year actually dawns to do so (they are inconsistent -- sometimes the list appears before the ball-drop, and sometimes afterwards). So you'll have to wait until at least tomorrow for that (or possibly Thursday, no promises...), due to circumstances beyond my control (sorry).
This isn't a real column, just an extended program note. I am busily working on tomorrow's year-end awards column, combing through the year's events for all the forgotten stuff, so I am currently too swamped to write an new article.
Instead, I thought I would ask readers for some preferences, as I work to figure out what the design of the new site will look like. I am heavily in favor of the "KISS" principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) and so am looking to remove a whole bunch of stuff. These sorts of things were niceties way back when, in the dawn of blogging, but are all woefully outdated now.
First, a program note. This will be the last column for this week, as I will be taking a break (and heartily wish everyone out there a very happy turkey day tomorrow!). Regular columns will resume on Monday.
Once again, due to family events outside my control, there will be no column today. I will be posting both tomorrow and Friday, to cover the debates, however.

America, led by President Donald Trump and (mostly) Republican governors across the country, launched a grand experiment a few months back. Rather than following guidelines and milestones recommended by top epidemiologists, each state would reopen its economy as it saw fit. If your governor felt comfortable enough with the state of things, then the doors would be thrown open. This all started just before Memorial Day weekend, when Trump decided he was bored with the pandemic. And now it's becoming pretty obvious that this experiment has failed, and failed badly. And tens of thousands of Americans are paying a very steep price for this exercise in unfounded optimism.
Sorry, there will be no column today. I forgot I had an appointment at the eye doctor, and after getting my eyes dilated I can barely see the computer screen, much less type. So even posting a re-run column today is an impossibility. Mea culpa and regular columns will resume tomorrow. [...]

I had outside appointments today that sprang up unexpectedly, but (conveniently-enough) the Trump trial in New York City was also on a hiatus today, so at least I didn't miss [...]
