Welcome To Our Annual Holiday Pledge Drive!

[ Posted Monday, December 5th, 2022 – 16:46 UTC ]

Welcome once again to our yearly funding drive! We only beg for money once a year, and (of course) we take advantage of the fact that people seem to be in more of a giving mood as the year-end holidays approach. Just to be fully honest with everyone....

This year, however, this column is going to be a bit different. I know, I know, everyone loves the flood of kittens each year (while dog enthusiasts protest my species-ism to no avail with "where are the puppies?!?" entreaties), but this year we're going to severely limit tugging at your collective heartstrings.

Well, not completely.

Happy Labor Day!

[ Posted Monday, September 5th, 2022 – 15:46 UTC ]

There will be no column today, as I will be celebrating Labor Day by not doing any. Hope everyone else is having an equally unproductive day!

Program Note

[ Posted Thursday, August 11th, 2022 – 20:20 UTC ]

Sorry, there will be no column today. Our power was off from 8:30 in the morning until the end of the day, so I had no internet access at all. I'll be spending tonight getting tomorrow's column ready (by raking through the week's news) so check back tomorrow when (hopefully) regular service will [...]

Nominations Open For Second Round Of Year-End Awards

[ Posted Thursday, December 16th, 2021 – 16:51 UTC ]

The timing of this article is not coincidental. I am punting on writing a new column today because I am already hard at work on tomorrow's column, which (as always) will be an absolute tome. With 20 categories to cover, it's going to be a long read, just to warn everyone in advance.

Welcome To Our Annual Holiday Pledge Drive!

[ Posted Tuesday, December 7th, 2021 – 18:00 UTC ]

As 2021 draws to a close, we have to say it's been a rather mixed year all around. COVID-19 is still a threat, but nowhere near the threat it was at this time last year. Sane people have gotten vaccinated three times while the lunatic fringe still endangers us all by refusing to get even one "Fauci ouchie." And we seem to all be very slowly learning the letters of the Greek alphabet, as Delta may now be giving way to Omicron. So we're not out of the coronavirus woods yet.

From The Archives -- Labor's Agenda Should Become Democrats' Top Priorities

[ Posted Monday, September 6th, 2021 – 15:55 UTC ]

Since today is Labor Day, I thought it was time to point out something that seems incredibly obvious to me. If you listen to the inside-the-Beltway chatter, Democrats are currently seen as floundering around, searching for an agenda. This is less true than the cocktail-party-circuit crowd believes, but whatever. Simultaneously, Democrats are urged to try to win back the working-class vote, because Donald Trump supposedly seduced them all away with his empty promises. Again, the answer to this perceived problem is pretty obvious. The Democratic Party needs to rededicate itself to the Labor agenda -- thus giving it a solid agenda to fight for, and also a perfect way to woo back white working-class voters.

Section 230? More Like Section 8...

[ Posted Tuesday, December 29th, 2020 – 14:47 UTC ]

That joke may date me a bit, because if you've never served in the military, the only way you'd recognize "Section 8" is from watching M*A*S*H. Corporal Klinger was forever trying to get kicked out of the Army for being insane or unfit to wear the uniform, under the military's Section 8 regulation. Now, Donald Trump is trying to kill a provision of the law that regulates online social media companies that happens to be called Section 230. But in doing so, he's really only proving the depths of his own insanity, since killing off Section 230 would result in the exact opposite of what Trump thinks it will. If Section 230 disappears, Twitter and Facebook and all the others are going to bend over backward to remove any postings that might get them sued. Which covers a whole lot of what Trump regularly tweets.

Welcome To Our Annual Holiday Pledge Drive!

[ Posted Monday, December 7th, 2020 – 17:22 UTC ]

And so 2020 finally draws to a close. As the Queen of England might say, it's been a real annus horribilis all around. Except for that one glorious day in November, of course. Well, OK, one glorious (and maddening and nail-biting) week, actually.

What I'm Thankful For

[ Posted Wednesday, November 25th, 2020 – 16:06 UTC ]

Since it's Thanksgiving-eve (or, at least, Thanksgiving-afternoon-before), I thought the most appropriate thing to write about today would be all the things I am thankful for. So here's my list of things which -- even after the most bizarre year anyone alive has ever seen in America -- I am still very thankful for, in no particular order.

Program Note

[ Posted Tuesday, October 13th, 2020 – 21:09 UTC ]

Due to other obligations in the offline world, there will be no column today. I realize it is the high season for the election and I did manage to catch some of the Supreme Court confirmation hearing in the Senate, but just don't have time to write about either.
Instead, in lieu of a column, [...]
