Friday Talking Points [256] -- Most Disappointing Plan B

[ Posted Friday, May 3rd, 2013 – 16:00 UTC ]

Before I get into our main subject, allow me a moment of frivolity. I'd like to be the first (because I'm a day early) to wish everyone a Happy Star Wars Day! Yes, tomorrow is unofficially known as Star Wars Day, because (get ready to groan if you haven't heard this one before) it is the fourth of May. Put another way, "May the 4th," as in (I'm warning you, this is pretty cringeworthy) "May the fourth be with you."

Wedges Losing Their Edges

[ Posted Thursday, May 2nd, 2013 – 17:02 UTC ]

This whole article is going to be just sheer speculation on my part, I'm going to admit that up front. But I can't help but wonder if we're truly seeing a few tried-and-true "wedge" issues -- that Republicans have long relied upon -- losing their edge. Public opinion seems to be blunting their effectiveness at doing what wedge issues are usually used for: driving voters apart, and (hopefully) into your party's camp. The two issues are gay marriage and gun control (specifically, background checks).

Friday Talking Points [255] -- Helium Brains

[ Posted Friday, April 26th, 2013 – 17:35 UTC ]

That was all a prelude to the breaking news today: "Congress moves at lightspeed, to fix a problem that would have hit them personally, as they take yet another weeklong vacation instead of doing the nation's business." Could've knocked me over with a feather. Ahem.

A Response To Gil Kerlikowske: Obama Drug Policy "Incomplete"

[ Posted Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 – 17:06 UTC ]

In a word, your assignment is woefully incomplete on a single subject: marijuana. This word appears not once in either document, which is kind of astounding since this is truly the only part of the White House drug policy which currently (and desperately) needs addressing, given the changing political situation. To put this another way, your paper might have garnered a higher grade last year, but we now live in 2013, and you have failed to address -- at a minimum -- the fact that the states of Colorado and Washington have now legalized recreational marijuana, and the number of states which have approved medicinal marijuana is approaching 40 percent. By failing to use the word "marijuana" once, you are ignoring the entire point of the assignment, which is why your grade range is currently just above abject failure.

Friday Talking Points [253] -- Ding Dong

[ Posted Friday, April 12th, 2013 – 16:56 UTC ]

In this week's news, former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died. As a result, Cher fans got a scare. The dangers of hashtag parsing -- because "nowthatchersdead" can be broken up two ways. The other pop culture result of the "Iron Lady's" demise was (you can't make this stuff up) the song "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" rocketing to the top of the British charts, even though it is three-quarters of a century old. Make of it what you will.

Still Waiting For Obama's Marijuana Policy

[ Posted Monday, April 8th, 2013 – 17:05 UTC ]

The 2012 election happened over five months ago, at the beginning of November. One notable result of this election was that two states -- Washington and Colorado -- voted to legalize marijuana for adult recreational use. This was a direct challenge to federal drug policy. We are all still waiting for the Obama administration's response. I don't know about you, but I, for one, am getting a little sick and tired of the wait.

Cut Congressional Chaplains

[ Posted Thursday, April 4th, 2013 – 16:29 UTC ]

President Obama is in the news this week, for voluntarily giving up five percent of his yearly pay, to show solidarity with federal workers who will be adversely financially affected by the sequester cuts. This will save the American taxpayer $20,000. This may be a drop in the bucket, so I thought I'd offer up a suggestion as to how to save a lot more money, on a permanent basis: abolish the offices of the two congressional chaplains.

Obama Poll Watch -- March, 2013

[ Posted Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013 – 16:13 UTC ]

OK, with that out of the way, let's have a look at March's polling. President Obama lost almost all the ground he had gained late in the 2012 election season, and his numbers fell back to where he was roughly six months ago. This isn't as bad as some media have made it out to be, since it may represent Obama's true natural level of support. But we're getting ahead of ourselves, let's take a look at this month's chart:

Friday Talking Points [251] -- Don Young Shows GOP How Not To Reach Out To Minorities

[ Posted Friday, March 29th, 2013 – 17:14 UTC ]

The big news towards the end of the week was "stupid things Republicans say," of course, but we're saving most of that for the "Talking Points" part of the program.

From The Archives -- Gay Marriage And Polygamy

[ Posted Thursday, March 28th, 2013 – 17:24 UTC ]

So the question must also be asked: Do you support the concept of polygamy? If so, why? If not, why not?
