Celebrating Putting Country Above Party

[ Posted Monday, October 24th, 2022 – 16:19 UTC ]

In a number of races in the midterm elections, an extraordinary thing is happening. Both Democrats and Republicans are backing candidates which are not from their own party. Republicans are endorsing Democrats. Democrats are endorsing Republicans or Independents who lean Republican. Each case, so far, is fairly individual. So this isn't yet a big trend or anything, but it is interesting nonetheless because it shows that in the right circumstances politicians still exist who are willing to put "country above party" -- in other words, supporting candidates they feel would be the best for America's future rather than blindly backing their own party's candidate.

There is a theme that runs through all these races, though. It might be called "protecting democracy," since in each of them there is at least one strong candidate who in one way or another has contributed to or since supported the undermining of our democratic system or our election systems. Or, to put it a different way, unquestioning followers of Donald Trump's Big Lie.

Some of these races have gotten more media attention than others. There are a lot of other stories vying for media attention in this midterm cycle, after all. But I thought it was worth taking a quick look at three of the most notable cases today.

Utah

Conservative Senator Mike Lee hasn't always been the staunchest supporter of Donald Trump, but like many Republicans in office has come to the conclusion that he can't win without courting Trump's voters. He is being challenged by Independent Evan McMullin, who previously ran for president in 2016 to provide a way for Utah Republicans to avoid having to vote for Donald Trump. Many did so, including... Mike Lee. That's strange enough, but the truly strange thing is that in what would normally be a three-way race, there are only two major candidates.

There's a big reason for this -- the Utah Democratic Party voted to not put up one of its own in the race, but rather nominate nobody and throw their support behind McMullin. This isn't completely unheard of in American politics, but it is quite rare, especially in a Senate race.

Democrats knew that if they nominated a candidate, a few things would be certain to happen: (1) whatever candidate they nominated would lose, (2) any votes in the general election cast for a Democrat would be votes that might have gone to McMullin, so (3) McMullin's chances to pull off an upset victory would be reduced to almost zero if a Democrat actually ran.

At best, any Democrat would have been a spoiler in the race. If the Democrats, however, did not nominate anyone, it would transform the race into a two-way contest and McMullin might actually have a chance of beating Lee. So that's what they did.

It wasn't a universally-loved idea among Utah Democrats, mind you. But now we are indeed headed into a two-way contest, and it is pretty close. Lee has shown a slight lead in the polls, but he's also clearly worried.

Lee has gotten the endorsement of all but one of his fellow Republicans in the Senate, but the one holdout is the most important to him. It is his fellow senator from Utah, Mitt Romney. Romney is refusing to endorse either candidate, on the grounds that he is friends with both and doesn't want to take sides. But the real reason is that Romney is seen as independent of Trump already, and would probably love to welcome McMullin as a fellow anti-Trump senator. Lee even recently went on Fox News and begged Romney to endorse him, to no avail.

McMullin is swearing he won't caucus with either party if he wins -- withholding his vote for Senate majority leader from both Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell. This could lead to a very interesting situation if the Senate balance of power could be changed by his vote, obviously. But he seems pretty adamant about his neutrality stance, so we'll see.

Whatever happens, win or lose, Evan McMullin's chances of victory were dramatically improved by Utah's Democrats refusal to nominate their own candidate. They put country over party, in a big and noticeable way.

Arizona

If you think of one Republican politician who best exemplifies putting country over party, Representative Liz Cheney would be the first to spring to mind. She's already lost her House seat from Wyoming, since she won't even be on the November ballot -- she was successfully primaried by a pro-Trump Republican. But she recently took it upon herself to travel to a nearby state and issue a warning to the voters of Arizona:

You have a [Republican] candidate for governor in Kari Lake, you have a [Republican] candidate for secretary of state in Mark Finchem, both of whom have said... that they will only honor the results of an election if they agree with it. The country is at the edge of an abyss. If we don't reject this appeasement of antidemocratic forces, we are going to go over the edge.

They've looked at all of that -- the law, the facts and the rulings, the courts -- and they've said it doesn’t matter to them. And if you care about democracy and you care about the survival of our republic, then you need to understand, we all have to understand, that we cannot give people power who have told us that they will not honor elections.

For almost 40 years now, I've been voting Republican. I don't know if I have ever voted for a Democrat. But if I lived in Arizona now, I absolutely would for governor and secretary of state.

That's a pretty astounding condemnation of her party's nominees, and a big endorsement for the Democratic nominees. And she's not the only Republican who is expressing the same feelings -- there is a real battle going on in Arizona for control of the state Republican Party, and there are some very well-respected state politicians saying the same sorts of things Cheney did.

But Cheney is the highest-profile Republican on the national stage to do so. This is Dick Cheney's daughter, after all.

Alaska

This is perhaps the strangest state in the midterms, for a number of reasons. One is their new ranked-choice voting, where second and third choices determine the winner of the race. Another is their independence from a lot of the politics of the "lower 48." Alaskans have very different issues on their minds than most Americans, and the politics of the state reflect it.

There are two interesting races here, one for their lone House seat and one for one of their Senate seats. In the House race, a few months back a Democrat won an open seat that Republicans had occupied for half a century (by the same person, but still...). Mary Peltola beat Sarah Palin for this seat, which was pretty notable. What happened was the race became a three-way contest, between two Republicans (Palin and Nick Begich, a member of an Alaskan political dynasty) and Peltola. The two Republicans despised each other and therefore would not encourage their supporters to vote for the other as their second choice on the ballot. So Peltola picked up enough votes to beat them both, in the end.

She is now running for a full term. And she's got the same two opponents on the ballot with her (in the new Alaska system, the top four candidates from the "jungle" primary advance to the general election). And the same outcome is what most people are predicting. Peltola, to prove how different politics is up in Alaska, is running on a campaign theme of: "pro-fish, pro-family, and pro-choice." Which, as noted, worked just fine for her a few months ago.

In the Senate, Lisa Murkowski is defending her seat from a pro-Trump Republican. Murkowski has angered Trump more than once, and is one of the few truly independent Republicans left in the Senate. Murkowski is polling ahead of the Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka, but most polls have put her below the 50 percent needed to claim outright victory -- meaning voters' second and third choices will likely determine the winner. There is also a Democrat in the race, polling far behind the two Republicans. So the voters who choose the Democrat in the first round could easily wind up being the crucial bloc to decide the election in the later rounds.

Which is why today's news was so interesting. A deep dive into the dynamics of the race in the Washington Post began with this stunning development:

Speaking to a large conference room of Alaska Natives on Friday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) had only words of praise for Rep. Mary Peltola (D), the first Alaska Native elected to Congress, who is also up for reelection.

"Mary is a woman whose heart is as grounded in Alaska as anybody you're going to find," Murkowski told reporters after the event, wearing a gold-colored, paisley-patterned kuspuk, common Alaska Indigenous clothing Peltola gave her last year.

Asked if she would rank Peltola first on her ballot next month in Alaska's new ranked-choice voting system, Murkowski paused. After a full 18 seconds, she said, "Yeah, I am." She then mumbled, "I'm going to get in so much trouble."

Asked to respond to Murkowski's de facto endorsement, Peltola said, "I'm voting for her, so we're even-steven."

Got that? A Republican senator from Alaska just endorsed the Democrat in the statewide House race, and the Democrat returned the favor by endorsing the Republican.

As I said, Alaska's politics are pretty unique. Mary Peltola and Sarah Palin are even personal friends, if you need any further proof.

Even so -- even with the unique nature of Alaska -- this is a pretty impressive development. A Democrat and a Republican agree on one basic goal: defeating the Trump-endorsed candidates. Once again, country before party.

Conclusion

These aren't the only races where such things are happening. The Republican candidate for governor in Pennsylvania is so downright frightening that many Republicans have endorsed the Democratic candidate. Former conservative Republican House member Jim Leach has endorsed the Democratic challenger to Senator Chuck Grassley in Iowa. After serving as a Republican in Congress for 30 years, Leach changed parties and joined the Democrats after January 6th, because fomenting an insurrection was a bridge too far for him.

There are others as well, most of them nowhere near as high-profile as the ones I've already mentioned. They all share the same basic goal -- saving the country from Trumpism and election-deniers. Whether that means Democrats throwing their weight behind moderate (read: "still sane") Republicans or Independents, or Republicans (and former-Republicans) endorsing Democrats, they all are doing the same noble thing: putting the best interests of their country ahead of purely partisan politics. And even though this effort isn't big enough or widespread enough to be called a real "trend," it is still an admirable thing to observe. Because sometimes there are more important things than blindly rooting for the politician who happens to have the same "team jersey" on that you do.

So, I have to begrudgingly hand it to Liz Cheney. She on board for every bit of the vile GOP agenda except for Florida Man's Big Lie, but she gave it all up to keep him away from the White House. I would prefer her over any other Republican for president. I've been very impressed with her at the hearings.

Nevertrump Republicans are mostly repulsive because so many of them refuse to acknowledge that it's a binary choice in a general election. Thank you Liz.

    Murkowski? No thanks.

I've got some "thanks" for her, regardless of her Party.

    What good is she?

She voted against repealing the Affordable Care Act. I will never forget the scene, with a 48-52 Senate at the time and the bill already having passed the House. If it got to 50-50, millions of Americans around the country were going to lose their health care because "hang Mike Pence" would break the tie. And for what? GOP health care plan "to be named later" because: "Nobody knew health care could be so complicated." *shakes head*

After seven (long) years of GOP attempts and promises end the ACA, in the wee small hours of the morning on July 28, 2017, the end was nigh. John McCain gets (deserved) credit for saving the ACA, but he couldn't have done it without Murkowski and Collins... and the 48 Democrats, of course.

Biden's student loan handout was done through executive action

Critics ripped into Joe Biden after the president falsely claimed that his student loan payout plan passed Congress.

During a town hall sponsored by NowThis News on Sunday, Biden flubbed a comment about his student loan relief plan, which was executed through executive action and was not passed through Congress.

"You’re probably aware I just signed a law that’s being challenged by my Republican colleagues—the same people who got PPP loans—during the, up to, in some cases up to five, six hundred thousand dollars. They have no problem with that—the individuals in Congress that got those," Biden said.

He then reiterated the details of his plan, which allow for up to $20,000 in loan forgiveness for Pell grant recipients, and up to $10,000 for all other college graduates.

"It’s passed, I got it passed by a vote or two, and it’s in effect," Biden incorrectly claimed.

President Joe Biden recently boasted that the Supreme Court and a lower court had declared that they are "on Biden's side" on tuition forgiveness. That was off-base, but Biden made an even more bizarre comment that he "passed [the loan forgiveness] by a vote or two" in Congress.

That boast is particularly embarrassing because the administration is in court claiming that he did not need to get congressional approval for the plan. It is likely to be raised by challengers in the next stage of litigation. It also may reflect a moment of actual clarity in his subconscious mind, a faint recognition of the constitutional principles that he once defended as a United States senator.

    It’s not just you.

Everyone can feel the ground shifting, and it’s not the ripples of a California earthquake. Arizona’s political fault line is rumbling and it’s breaking the Republicans’ way.

Most now expect Kari Lake to win the governor’s seat due to Katie Hobbs’ feckless campaign. Blake Masters went from double digits behind Sen. Mark Kelly to closing within the margin of error. The most recent poll puts him a single percentage point behind the incumbent.

The GOP momentum is showing up not only in Arizona but nationwide.

Republican Senate candidates lead big in Nevada, Ohio and Wisconsin. They’re also surging in Georgia and Pennsylvania. Even Oregon’s governor and Rhode Island’s congressman are expected to turn their deep blue states red.

For all the summer talk of Republicans choosing bad candidates, the Democrats are the ones with buyer’s remorse.

It was all fun and games for Democrats to cheer on Lake and Masters as “unelectable” candidates in their primaries. This idiotic strategy famously backfired with Trump in 2016 and is primed to backfire yet again.

Violent Crime Is Driving a Red Wave

Two weeks before the 2022 midterms, fear of crime is second only to worries over inflation and recession. Both issues – personal security and economic security – affect voters directly. They arise every time voters ride the subway, walk down a dark street, pay the cashier at the grocery, or fill up their truck. That’s why survey after survey says they are the top issues motivating voters this November. That’s bad news for Democrats. Pollsters say Republicans hold huge advantages on the economy, inflation, and crime, the issues that matter most to voters.

Since crime is essentially a local issue, why does it hurt Democrats running for national or statewide office? Because the Democratic Party has associated itself with the notion that “social justice” and “racial equality” require fundamentally changing policing and incarceration. The problem, they say, is police, not criminals. In practice, that means Democrats, especially progressives, favor weaker law enforcement, easier conditions for bail (even for those charged with violent offenses), and less funding for police officers. That message was encapsulated in the slogans “defund the police” and “reimagine policing,” which took hold in 2020 after George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis cop.

Who could have POSSIBLY predicted that Demorats and their hate police, hate America policies would actually HURT Americans??

Who would have thunked that the Demorat DEFUND DEMONIZE DEMORALIZE THE POLICE and no bail PRO Criminal polices would actually come back and bite Demorats on the arse??

Who could have EVER predicted that!?? :D

    Oh.. Wait.. :D

Now Democrats are stuck with the consequences on the streets and, soon, at the ballot box. The party’s “soft on crime” image has become a political albatross, which candidates cannot readily discard. They are weighed down for two reasons. First, they hold power nationally and in almost every major city, so voters hold them responsible for bad outcomes. The party’s unwillingness to enforce basic laws and protect the public is exemplified by the porous Southern border, a deliberate policy choice by the Biden administration. The result has been an unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants (some 2.4 million in the last fiscal year alone), plus a surge of deadly drugs. Mexican cartels have reaped billions in profits, five or six times as much as they made before Biden threw open the border.

When I was a cop on patrol I always knew that, while the criminals hated us, we at least had the backing of LEO and political leaders....

    But today???

LEO back-office weenies and political so-called "leaders"??? Well they can't throw street cops under the bus fast enough...

And you people wonder WHY Demorats are going to be thrown out of office en-masse in 2 weeks???

More facts to support the Demorat Hate Cops policies.. :^/

Second, when the movement to defund police was at its height, no prominent national Democrats were willing to push back forcefully. That means candidates today cannot appeal to the public on these issues. None chose to follow Bill Clinton’s path during the 1992 presidential campaign, when he denounced Sister Souljah’s openly racist statements. None, including Joe Biden, were willing to become the pro-law enforcement face of the party, to denounce widespread rioting during the summer of 2020, to urge a crackdown on arsonists, looters, muggers, carjackers, and killers. Far from it. When Democrats held their nominating convention in Milwaukee that summer, they remained silent about the violence. Biden chose as his running mate a California senator who personally urged her Twitter followers to send money to a Minnesota nonprofit that helped post bail for protestors accused of breaking the law.

Voters get the point – and they don’t like it. They link the rise in crime to Democratic policies, to their unwillingness to make public safety a high priority, to their refusal to enforce the law. They don’t believe candidates who blame these problems mainly on bad policing or “systemic racism.” Voters do recognize the serious problems plaguing poor, minority communities and, for some six decades, have supported social-welfare programs to address them (with uneven results). But that doesn’t mean they accept crime, especially violent crime, whatever its social roots.

Funny how Weigantians® all claimed that Demorats weren't REALLY all about Defunding, Demonizing and Demoralizing the police..

    Wolverines. That's practically Canada.

I also recall that Red Dawn came out while I was active duty and it made me want to re-up.

Red Dawn and Stripes. The '80s were full of 'em. ;)

Anyways, I'm still not sweating the Senate which is good for my long term prognosis but only so I can focus all of my stressing on the House. Who the hell knows what's going to happen there?

History and the recent re-gerrymandering tells you what will happen in the House. As for the Senate, keep an eye on tonight's debate. Debates are all about expectation. If your opponent has incessantly (foolishly) prattled on and on about your incompetence, all one need do to win a debate is to beat his/her expectations.

    Very good point.. :D

It's why Walker won the Walker/Warlock debate.. Because Walker beat expectations.. The facts that prove this are as plentiful as they are conclusive.. :D

Republicans gain steam in Senate battle

A raft of new polls this week in the key Senate battlegrounds showed GOP gains.

Republicans are roaring back in the battle to control the 50-50 Senate.

Over the past week, polls show GOP candidates closing the gap in states where Democrats have led all summer — and perhaps pulling away in races that had appeared close for months.
    https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/22/senate-swing-state-polls-2022-00062752

And the hits keep on coming for the Demorats.. :D

I would be HAPPY to take a look at ya'all's facts that support the claim that the GOP is going to lose in a little over 2 weeks.. :D

Any facts out there that says that?? :D

In Pennsylvania, Mehmet Oz has inched even closer to John Fetterman. Herschel Walker is neck-and-neck with Sen. Raphael Warnock in Georgia, and Blake Masters has narrowed Sen. Mark Kelly’s lead in Arizona. And Republican polling shows Adam Laxalt squeezing past Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada.

Meanwhile, Republicans stuck in stubbornly tied red states are beginning to show signs of building more durable advantages. Polls now show GOP candidates J.D. Vance and Ted Budd moving ahead of their Democratic opponents in Ohio and North Carolina, respectively.

In PA, Fraydeeman is going down in flames.. Doc Oz is passing Fraydeeman quite nicely...

Walker is passing Warlock in GA.. As I said.. GA loves their college football heroes.... Slum-Lord Demorats?? Not so much... :D

In Nevada, Demorats can kiss ANY hope good-bye.. Demorats have so scroo'ed over hispanic Americans, that any hopes in Nevada is gone...

AZ was the ONLY bright spot possibility for Demorats.. But Kelly is going down in flames..

I mean, we might actually be looking at a 55 GOP Senate here.. A clean sweep!! :D

I am not predicting that.. I am guessing we're looking at a 52 possibly 53 GOP Senate..

But GOP DOES have a path to a 55 GOP Senate.. :D

It's going to be an exciting day in about 2 weeks, eh?? :D

Hope everyone will stick around for the festivities!! :D

You mean, ordnance? Heh. Just kidding.

Allowing it to spam repetitive, content-free, cut-and-paste Trumpanzee propaganda 20 times per column is generous enough on your part.

You make a lot of great points, JFC; I agree 100%, and I also think there should come a time when the off-topic stuff pulled out of nowhere should just literally be deleted right off the board. If it strays off topic in "conversation," that's one thing, but the trolling cut-and-paste repetitive verbal diarrhea should just be unceremoniously deleted. Self-serving trolling and spamming content unrelated to the author's column is just outright rude and definitely shouldn't be tolerated.

Fox News Power Rankings: Storm clouds gather for Democrats in the Northeast

Republicans set to take 16-seat majority in the House, a slight increase for party since last week

The forecast looks gloomier for Democrats as Election Day nears, with a spate of recent polls suggesting that even the sitting governor of New York is in some danger. In this edition of the Fox News Power Rankings, five northeast races shift towards Republicans, and signs of a potential upset are emerging in the Oklahoma governor's race.
    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fox-news-power-rankings-storm-clouds-gather-democrats-northeast

And for the Demorats, the hits just keep on comin'!! :D

The way things are going for the Demorats, the gods themselves will come down from on high and smite the Demorats!!! :D

This increase for the GOP comes as the party makes gains in national polling. Two weeks into October, our Fox News Poll showed Republicans taking the lead on the generic ballot among voters who said they felt "certain to vote" in the midterms. Now, multiple polls that break out their results among ‘certain’ or ‘likely’ voters are showing a small GOP advantage. It comes at a time when millions of Americans are already voting. Barring a late October surprise, it is difficult to see how the race for control of Congress could change direction.

Demorats are simply proving that they cannot compete.... :D

It's gonna be a HUGELY fun election!!! :D

    Here Comes the Democrat Rout

Students of military history understand that the real bloodletting starts when the losing side breaks ranks after its formations disintegrate and the cavalry sweeps in to mow down the fleeing survivors. It’s every man for himself, and the best the defeated individuals who were once part of cohesive units can hope for is not to end up one of the bodies left strewn across the battlefield. This is when the victor runs up the score. This is when the vast majority of casualties happen. This is a rout. And that’s pretty much where the Democrats are headed on November 8th, figuratively of course.

For the stupid people, we Republicans are the cavalry. For the really stupid people, cavalry is a highly-mobile fighting force, in ancient times mounted on horseback wielding lances, sabers, and sometimes bows or carbines. In the US Army, cavalrymen have given up their steeds but still wear bitchin’ headgear.

Rubio canvasser attacked in Florida; 1 arrested

Rubio said the alleged victim will need reconstructive surgery

Police have made one arrest after a canvasser supporting the reelection campaign of Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. was beaten down on the street in Hialeah, Florida.

Rubio tweeted Monday that the canvasser was attacked Sunday night by four people who supposedly told him Republicans were not allowed in their area.

"Last night one of our canvassers wearing my T-shirt and a Desantis hat was brutally attacked by 4 animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their neighborhood in #Hialeah #Florida," Rubio posted. "He suffered internal bleeding, a broken jaw & will need facial reconstructive surgery."

According to a police report published by Local 10 News, one suspect in the attack was identified as Javier Lopez. The report said Lopez allegedly was blocking the sidewalk while the canvasser was trying to pass by. The canvasser then tried to walk toward the other side of the street to get around him when Lopez allegedly said, "You can't pass by here, this is my neighborhood."

When asked by Local 10 News if police believed the attack was politically motivated, Sgt. Jose Torres, a Hialeah Police Department spokesperson, said the agency would “allow the investigation to reveal that,” but, as of Monday afternoon, there was “no indication that is the case.”

So, how are ya gonna feel about serving a GOP Governor in Oregon, eh?? :D

This is how it happens for the losing party. In the spring, there are rumors and hushed whispers among the cognoscenti about the coming of a wave. There is fear; this is used to stoke the donors into handing over more of their dollars to help stave off disaster. Then, in the dog days of August, there arises hope. Maybe, just maybe, it will not be a disaster. Perhaps we will defy history and not lose many seats; maybe we will even gain! Take that, fundamentals!

And then Labor Day happens and people begin to pay attention and the hope that was so hopeful at the end of the summer begins to dissipate. For a few weeks, until about mid-October, they tell themselves that nothing has changed since summer, that hope is alive, and that there will be no wave. And in mid-October, the signs become impossible to ignore.

The money dries up for the losing party, while the smart money flows to the winning one. Polls start changing, first one, then two, then all of them, all in one direction. We hear of the losing side making tough calls to abandon the weak to try and save a few of the less weak. Nothing goes right. Gaffes, mistakes, the occasional sex scandal. You can feel the gloom setting in. The cheerleaders begin hedging their predictions. When the Democrats are the losers, like in this cycle, the regime media begins walking back its official optimism to avoid total humiliation when the narrative it has been pushing for the last six months turns to ashes.

Then the ranks break. The solid front shatters. The rout begins.

We’re almost there. We are almost to the point of Democrat collapse.

It's gonna be like Election Day 2016 around Weigantia® in just about 2 weeks.. :D

    You see the point?? :eyeroll:

The fundamentals of history were always against the Dems, but Shower Daddy’s reign of error supercharged them. Inflation. Perversion. Open borders. Criminals running wild. The threat of nuclear war. These factors all intensified the Dem’s already daunting challenges. And then last week, in a stroke of timing genius, the Biden CDC decided to effectively mandate that kids have to take the vaccine the CDC lied to us about. Way to remind everyone about COVID while infuriating moms who prefer their kids’ hearts not explode from a vax that won’t prevent a disease that won’t kill them.

In the spring, they dreamed that the Dobbs decision, which made it slightly less convenient for some women in some red states to kill their babies, would negate the fundamentals of history and $6 gas. But it turns out the people into infanticide was already solidly in the commie corner. They may cast votes angrily, but a mad vote counts just as much as a happy one. Except in a Democrat-blue city, but I digress.

In the meantime, record numbers of Latinx people are choosing to vote against the people who call them “Latinx,” and black men especially are moving right in numbers that must terrify the Dems.

No matter WHICH metric ya'all want to choose, Dems are simply heading for a HUGE loss...

Biden's closing argument for Democrats won't work in November

Biden's tired rhetoric won't help Democrats this midterm election

Who are the political geniuses who green-lighted President Joe Biden’s recent episode of agitprop? White House communicators labeled it "Remarks on Historic Deficit Reduction." It was really the Democrat Party’s script for the election’s closing weeks.

As a Republican, I welcome the president’s 13-minute muddle of fabrication, misdirection, and self-delusion.

However, I’m mystified that someone who’s been in politics for 52 years like Biden could be so tone-deaf, out-of-touch, and wrong in picking a closing argument for his party in a midterm where Democrats already face big hurdles.
