The January 6th Select Committee Hearings Continue, But For How Long?

[ Posted Monday, July 11th, 2022 – 16:07 UTC ]

After a holiday break, the House Select Committee on January 6th will reconvene their public hearing schedule tomorrow, at 1:00 P.M. Eastern time. The only thing they've revealed (as of this writing) is that tomorrow's testimony will focus on the role played by right-wing militias such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, and will also highlight Donald Trump's actions (and, more importantly, inaction) on January 6th. No witness lists have been made public yet, so we might have to wait until tomorrow to even know who will be there (although there is already plenty of in-depth media speculation about who could show up).

This is all in keeping with the committee playing its cards very close to the vest all the way throughout this miniseason of "must-see TV." Nobody knows what will happen until the last minute -- which does indeed build tension and "buzz" with the audience. We've already had one hearing cancelled at the last minute (during the first week) and one surprise hearing that wasn't announced until the day before (at the beginning of what was supposed to be a two-week July 4th break). Right now, the big unanswered question is: how many more public hearings are we going to get?

Some news reports are predicting only two more hearings -- one tomorrow, during the day, and then one final primetime hearing on Thursday night. But ever since Cassidy Hutchinson testified, members of the committee have been teasing how a whole lot more witnesses have been coming out of the woodwork with stories to tell them; plus Pat Cipollone testified last Friday for reportedly seven or eight hours; plus now even Steve Bannon seems downright eager to testify (although his trial for contempt of Congress, which begins next week, might have a lot to do with that decision). That all seems like a lot of new information for the committee to process, which would lead to the conclusion that further public hearings might be necessary to explore these things before the big wrap-up in primetime. Again, nobody knows what the committee will do until just before they do it, so anything is possible at this point.

There are a few lenses through which to see all of this, of course. There is the question of how much information should be presented to the public in these hearings, versus just including stuff as exhibits or even footnotes in the committee's final written report (due out before Election Day). There is the question of audience fatigue -- will people keep watching in the astonishing numbers the hearings have drawn so far? The surprise hearing with Hutchinson -- held during daytime television, mind you -- drew in an astounding 13 million viewers, a higher number than for all but one of the recent basketball championship tournament final games. And that was with only one day's notice to the public. But it has to be a consideration of the committee, in determining their timetable (and how many more hearings to hold), that they not get bogged down in too many abstruse details and, by avoiding that, manage to keep the viewers glued to their screens.

The real question, however, should be whether the entire case has been fully made or not. Has the committee (with tomorrow's hearing included) adequately explored all the questions that people had about the insurrection attempt? There are a few more subjects that really should be presented, at least from where I sit. There's the question of financing -- who paid what for how many buses and hotel rooms for people to come to Washington D.C. for January 6th? Were these efforts bankrolled from shady figures on the right, as has been intimated? What happened at the Pentagon that day? We got very conflicting reports just afterwards, and it would be instructive to have a few very high-ranking generals lay out exactly what happened (and what didn't) in the calling out of the D.C. National Guard (and support troops from Maryland and Virginia). What else does the Secret Service know that hasn't been admitted already? Also, what was in all those videos that Trump recorded before he recorded the version that was publicly released? There are reports it took quite a few takes -- meaning that all the other ones were worse somehow than Trump telling the rioters: "We love you, you're very special." So what did he say in the other ones? Does the committee actually have those video outtakes? Let's see them!

As you can see, not all of the important questions have been answered. And I just thought those up off the top of my head -- I'm certain there are other areas worth exploring as well. With the tight focus the committee has shown in the previous hearings, I find it highly doubtful that all of that could be covered in just one hearing tomorrow. Perhaps some of this stuff is being held back for the blockbuster final hearing, but again, I hope the committee doesn't err on the side of "too little" in the hearings -- I would much rather them lean more towards "too much."

Due to Republicans burying their collective heads in the sand, these hearings are going to be the clearest and most in-depth investigation we're ever going to get into what went on from the election all the way up to and immediately following the January 6th insurrection attempt. Republicans ignoring it all (as well as plenty of other things they're doing, such as normalizing right-wing militias) is actively contributing to an increasing culture of violence in American politics. This is why the committee's work is so important. They are not just examining some remote event that happened in the past and is now completely over -- this is an ongoing threat to American democracy. January 6th could become just the "test run" for worse violence to come.

Which is why I am hopeful that the committee does not adhere to some preset timeline, but instead allows for as many publicly-televised hearings as they think are necessary to tell the American people both the whole truth of what did happen, but also what needs to happen now -- in Congress and elsewhere -- for this never to happen again. We'll see what the committee decides to do, later in the week, but what I'm hoping for at this point is the committee announcing two or three more daytime hearings before the big primetime season finale.

We watched so much of this happen out in public, right before our very eyes, that at the start of these hearings I remember thinking that there wasn't a whole lot more to learn.

That is not proven to be the case and I think that there are more surprises yet to come. I agree that so long as they stick with their plan thus far they should hold as many Hearings as is needed. If wouldn't surprise me if they have a Hearing or two after Labor Day to present additional information discovered between now and closer to the Midterms.

I too have decided to waive executive privilege for Steve Bannon to testify to the J6 Committee. While my waiver wasn't written by a dotard with the intellectual capacity of a 4-year-old child, it is notably worth exactly the same as the executive privilege waiver of Donald Trump: Bupkis.

Y'all remember how defiant Steve Bannon was when he was indicted on two counts of criminal contempt of Congress for (1) refusal to appear and (2) refusal to produce documents?

    Let's review:

    * I'm never going to back down.

    * They took on the wrong guy.

    * I'm telling you right now: This is going to be the misdemeanor from hell for Merrick Garland, Nancy Pelosi, and Joe Biden.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtFa1ORxnBE

    *
Donald Trump has no executive privilege to waive and no pardons because he's a private citizen just like everyone else not named Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

Bannon's intent to defy Congress was made patently obvious by his own bloviating ignorance. Roll tape. :)

    Roll tape, indeed.

I'm hoping that J6C doesn't need Bannon's testimony and he can be left to his open-and-shut-case trial for Contempt of Congress and subsequent incarceration. Let the dude simply go to jail to ensure that future Congressional Subpoenas are respected!

Also, although this is not a trial, per se, the J6C folks are presenting the case that DoJ won't be able to ignore. It's giving DoJ both time and political cover to do their defense of the Rule of Law thing.

As such "live" first-time testimony should be off the table as in situations like this one should never ask a question that they don't know the answer to.

Biden will begin his Middle East trip this week in his first trip to the region since taking office, starting in Israel and the occupied West Bank. He will end his trip in Saudi Arabia. Biden has said that the trip will advance American interests by focusing on the global trade and supply chains the U.S. relies on.

Many countries in the West, including the U.S., want Saudi Arabia to produce more oil to help mitigate the growing global energy crisis that was ignited by the Ukraine war. More production will also punish Russia, a major oil exporter, by bringing global prices down.

Besides the fact that under DeSantis’ leadership, the Florida population has grown, and under Newsom’s leadership, for the first time ever in California, the population shrunk in 2020 and 2021, it seems clear that DeSantis would trounce Newsom in important swing states. Democrats might not see it that way; the GOP should encourage that. They should want Newsom to run for President because his whole platform will be about guns and abortion — no problem-solving solutions.

Newsom would run the country just like he ran San Francisco as its mayor, and now the state of California: an ineffective ‘leader’ who has made the homelessness crisis worse by not having mental health workers readily available to treat those in need, by the lack of rehabilitation centers for the homeless, and as much as the rescue missions are trying to help and reduce homelessness, it is continuously increasing due to Newsom’s ineffectiveness, and horrible leadership. Forty percent of small businesses were forced to shut down during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

That may not translate to the national level; however, his inability to run the fifth-largest economy in the world while having homelessness worsen, rampant crime due to Prop 47, and district attorneys like George Gascon, both of which Newsom supported, making people feel unsafe. His ineffectiveness in leading on several major issues might cause more damage than any President has before.

A DeSantis-Newsom race would be the last thing Democrats would want, especially if they both run on their respective records as Governor. Newsom kept his state under lockdown, destroying small businesses, and keeping schools closed, while his kids attended private school. In Florida, DeSantis kept the state open, the economy boomed, and small businesses continued to thrive, while there were no mandates, and schools were open.

We Were Wrong About Progressive DAs. They Do Want to Lock People Up: Victims

We're been wrong all along. We believed Manhattan's progressive District Attorney Alvin Bragg when he campaigned on a platform of decarceration. We took him at the word of his memo that he didn't believe in locking people up—even those with gun charges.

Turns out, we were wrong to believe him. DA Bragg does want to lock people up, it is just the wrong people. He's going after victims instead of criminals.

That's the lesson of the story of Jose Alba, a New York City bodega clerk who stabbed and killed his assailant. Alba was attacked by a career criminal named Austin Simon, who came to the store and attacked Alba after Simon's girlfriend argued with Alba because her EBT card was declined. Video shows Simon walk behind the counter, push Alba and physically assault him. To defend himself, Alba grabbed a knife and stabbed Simon, who died of his injuries.

So, ya'all are thinking that this is a TEXTBOOK case of self-defense, right??

Even MORE of a textbook case of self defense than the George Zimmerman shooting.. Even MORE of a textbook case than the Kyle Rittenhouse shooting..

Right?? That's what ya'all are thinking, right??

    Well, ya'all would be wrong..

Because, of course, ya'all didn't take into account the utter STOOPIDITY of Democrats in America's number one shithole, New York City...

This is clearly a textbook case of self-defense. Simon had at least eight prior arrests, including robbery and assault during a domestic dispute, and was on parole for assaulting a police officer at the time of the bodega incident. And yet, the Manhattan District Attorney's office—run by the same DA who said that pulling a gun on someone is not a violent offense—charged Alba, a man without a criminal record, with second-degree murder and sent him to Riker's Island, where he was imprisoned on a $250,000 bail.

What the hell is in the water up there in NYC, JL???

Yet, after the Democrat DA has this guy ARRESTED and charged with MURDER... The Democrat DA demands a HALF MILLION DOLLAR BAIL!!!

This is the logical endpoint of progressives's endless compassion for criminals. Criminals wielding illegal guns should be given the benefit of the doubt but innocents defending themselves have the book thrown at them. Progressives demand we end cash bail—and then turn around and demand Alba be held on $500,000 bail for the crime of defending himself from a criminal.

This is not to say that Joe Biden's presidency has been entirely successful. Many feel he has been unable to secure important legislative victories or fulfill campaign promises, despite having a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. President Biden also failed to secure voting rights or police reform, both big issues for African Americans, who also happen to be the Democrats most loyal and important voting block.

The President also appears helpless in the fight to protect bodily autonomy and healthcare for women and girls in the wake of the reversal of Roe v. The bail was reduced Thursday to a $50,000 bond, which his family has since posted, after he languished for nearly a week at notorious Rikers Island.

"It’s shocking, shocking, inexplicable, that they charged him," said Daniel Bibb, who prosecuted murder cases for nearly three decades under late Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau.

"They’re crazy. It’s clear from the video that he’s acting in self-defense. It’s clear from all the evidence that they have thus far," railed Bibb, who now works as a criminal defense lawyer.

At the time of Simon’s killing, he was on probation for assault and already had at least 27 arrests under his belt, according to police sources.

The shocking handling of the case has prompted local New York City Council members from both sides of the aisle to demand that the embattled Manhattan DA dismiss the charge. Prominent criminal defense lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman has offer to represent Alba for free.

I know, right!!?? It was MIND-BLOWING...

I was watching it with my son and I freaked him out when I could quote the lines before the characters said them.. :D The even had similar camera angles and lighting that the old TOS episode had... :D

And I thought having Scotty's arm there was a nice touch.. :D

As much as I liked Hemmer, I hope Scotty makes his debut in Season 2.. Canon tells us that Scotty was on the Enterprise when Kirk took over..

And James Doohan's son, Christopher already has experience playing Scotty... :D

I didn't like the actor they got to play Kirk.. None of Kirk's intensity and didn't even look at all like Kirk...

But I guess it can't ALL be perfect...

The Episode (actually, the whole season) did have some minor Canon violations..

The USS Farragut was a Constitution Class Starship.. One of the original 13 Starships that made up Starfleet..

And, in the previous episode, the USS Peregrine was a Constitution Class Starship.. But there was no USS Peregrine in that class..

So, a couple of minor Canon violations..

However, a big KUDO to the producers for actually paying attention to the canon timeline..

In the alternate reality, Spock says that the accident with the Class J Starship occurred 1 month ago...

That would be consistent with the events in TOS' THE MENAGERIE 2-parter where we first learned of Captain Pike accident aboard the Class J Starship..

In between the events of The Menagerie and the events of the alternate reality, we had the events of TOS Episode THE CONSCIENCE OF THE KING...

So, that makes sense, as far as the timeline is concerned...

But, then again, in the alternate timeline, the events of THE CONSCIENCE OF THE KIND and the events of THE MENAGERIE would not have happened and therefore there would have been none of the events of ST DISCOVERY where they visit TALOS IV....

Because in that instance, CLEARLY diplomacy was not called for.. Pike (like Picard) prefers diplomacy uber alles..

But a GREAT leader knows when it's time for diplomacy and when it's time for cracking heads..

Picard/Pike will go to ANY lengths to avoid cracking heads..

As we can see... With disastrous results..

Disagree. But about pike, yes. Part of what made Picard formidable was that he WAS able to realize when diplomacy was being counterproductive and get out of his head and fight.

Nowhere near kirk's battle prowess mind you, but sometimes more effectively.

If anything, the alternate conclusion showed just how much Kirk needs Spock in order to be his best self.
