Personality Matters

[ Posted Wednesday, July 6th, 2022 – 16:40 UTC ]

Control of the United States Senate will be one of the biggest political prizes fought over in the 2022 midterm elections this November. So far, out of all the 2022 Senate races, Democrats look fairly well positioned to either hold onto their thin majority or perhaps even expand it by one or two. In what is supposed to be a very Republican-friendly year, the GOP's chances of taking the Senate seem dimmer than ever. This is due to one very big reason: personality matters. The quality of the candidates matter.

This isn't the first time Republicans may be blowing what could be a big victory for them. Remember Christine "I Am Not A Witch" O'Donnell? Or Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin? Nominating complete nutjobs to Senate races is not exactly a new thing for the GOP, in other words. And in our current Trumpian era, they're going to be relying on some very nutty candidates indeed.

There are three races in particular which seem eminently winnable for Democrats right now. There is one more where an upset is possible, but less probable. And two other races where sitting Democrats might have a much easier ride to re-election.

The first of these races is Georgia, where Republicans have decided upon a celebrity candidate who seems awfully shaky. Herschel Walker was a star football player who won the Heisman Trophy as a junior at the University of Georgia. That isn't just a big deal in Georgia, it is an enormous deal. Also, Walker is Black, which would give the Republicans a second Black senator from the South, if he is elected. He's also buddies with Donald Trump, which certainly helps boost him with the GOP voter base.

But Walker, like Trump, is not a politician. He doesn't care much about policy; he's running for office as a lark. And it shows. He has already had numerous scandals exposed, including allegations of spousal abuse and three children born outside of his marriage. He has already managed to utter quite a few gaffes, since he is not a polished political speaker. He has a lot of baggage, in other words. He rarely speaks to the media or appears at debates, and it's pretty easy to see why -- because, just like with Trump, nobody has any idea what he'll say in any given circumstance.

The Democrat in the race, Senator Raphael Warnock, is also a Black man, but one with a much more solid public-speaking background (as a church minister). So Georgia voters are going to be faced with the choice between a very impressive sitting senator and a complete loose cannon. Georgia is the swingiest of swing states, so it really could go either way, but Warnock may look like the better choice to a whole lot of suburban voters in the end. This may prove to be the margin of victory, but we'll have to see. Warnock might have been in trouble if Republicans had nominated a more serious candidate, so it could wind up being a lost opportunity for a GOP pickup in 2022. Also, Democrats seem more enthused about the top of their ticket, in the governor's race. Stacey Abrams has Democrats fired up, while Trump tried his hardest to take out the Republican candidate, sitting governor Brian Kemp, in the GOP primary. So some MAGA Republican voters in Georgia may not even bother showing up to vote, which could also aid Warnock.

Pennsylvania Republicans also chose a celebrity for their nominee. Mehmet "Dr." Oz has a different kind of baggage, but it may prove to be enough to drag his chances down. Oz is quite correctly seen as a carpetbagger, who hastily moved into Pennsylvania from neighboring New Jersey just so he could run. Adding insult to injury, Oz filed a campaign form where he (or whatever flunky filled it out for him) actually misspelled the name of the town where he supposedly now lives. That's embarrassing. Add in the fact that he was until very recently a dual citizen (of the U.S. and Turkey), and he just doesn't really seem like a hometown type of guy to a lot of Keystone State voters.

Oz, much like Trump, obviously doesn't care one whit about policy or politics, he's mostly running to boost his own personal brand. Win or lose, he figures he'll be a bigger public personality afterwards, which he will then attempt to exploit for all it is worth. But while Trump successfully pulled off pretending to be a "man of the people," Oz may find this a much tougher task. He only barely squeaked out a primary win, with a whole lot of GOP voters voting against him, many because they considered him "too Hollywood." Or just too fake, period.

Oz is running against the sitting Pennsylvania lieutenant governor, John Fetterman. Fetterman is about as authentic a regular guy as you can get. He looks like a professional wrestler, wears gym shorts even while it is snowing out, and isn't just pretending to be a man of the people, he actually is one. One who has already won a statewide race, too. So far, Fetterman has been polling well ahead of Oz. This might just be bad feelings within the Republican base left over from the primary, though, so we'll have to see whether Oz improves his standing over the summer.

So far, Fetterman looks like he could easily win. The top of the ticket here has a seriously nutty Trump wannabe running for governor on the GOP side, which could (as in Georgia) push a whole lot of suburban voters over to the Democratic side of the ballot.

Georgia is a Democratic-held seat, Pennsylvania's is open (a Republican is retiring), but in Wisconsin the Republican who currently sits in the Senate could be in trouble. Senator Ron Johnson is a close contender (some would call him the obvious victor) for the title of "Craziest Of The Crazy U.S. Senators." Johnson was relentless in pushing every conspiracy theory he possibly could during the entire COVID pandemic, he not only was a true believer in Trump's Big Lie about the election but he actively tried to take part in the coup, and in general he is known for raving like a lunatic whenever interviewed on television. He also originally pledged not to run again (his own self-imposed term limits, from when he first ran) and is now breaking that pledge by seeking a third term.

Wisconsin hasn't held their primary elections yet, so it'll be another month before we know which of the Democrats who are currently running will be taking on Johnson. Wisconsin itself seems to be trending a lot bluer, as Democrats have made huge gains in the last two elections. And suburban voters there might be just a little tired of Johnson's histrionics and lunacy representing their state. So Democrats have a good chance of picking this seat up no matter which one of them takes Johnson on.

Without these three races, and assuming no other states flip, the score in the Senate would be 49-48 in the Democrats' favor. So they have to win at least one of these three races to retain control of the chamber. But if they win two or three, then Kamala Harris won't have to work so hard because Democrats would have a clear simple majority to work with. And if Democrats picked up all three of these seats, then they could then absolutely ignore Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema and actually get some big things done.

The other races worth watching are Ohio, Arizona, and Nevada. In Ohio, the Republicans have also gone with a celebrity candidate, the author of Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir Of A Family And Culture In Crisis. But J.D. Vance might have an easier time getting elected than Dr. Oz or Herschel Walker. Ohio has been trending a lot redder for a while now, so it would be a big upset if Tim Ryan were to beat Vance. It's not impossible -- Ohio's other senator is Democrat Sherrod Brown -- but it has to be seen as a longshot at this point.

There are other competitive races which could see some surprises (New Hampshire, North Carolina, perhaps Florida), but in two of them in particular the Democrats seem like they'll retain their edge with the voters. Arizona hasn't held its primaries yet, but the Republican who is leading in the polls is a very Trumpy guy who would likely be a hard sell in an increasingly-purple state. In Nevada, the Republican nominee was quoted at a pancake breakfast last month saying "Roe v. Wade was always a joke." Nevada's voters approve of legal abortion to the tune of 63 percent, and the state has been slowly getting a lot bluer. In both Arizona and Nevada, Democratic incumbents will be running for re-election, which always helps.

It is obviously too early to be making any sort of prediction on the outcome of the 2022 midterms. And there are plenty of other races to watch as well -- governors' races, state elections officials' races, and all the House races. But even if a "red wave" does appear in all the other areas of the ballot, Democrats might still have a good chance of at least holding onto control in the Senate. House candidates in gerrymandered districts can afford to be pretty nutty, but in Senate races candidates have to appeal to a wider swath of the public. In the closest of the battleground states, the difference can be whether candidates can convince independent voters or those in the suburbs that they would be the wiser choice. They can't just play straight to the Republican base, in other words.

This is where the personality of the candidate comes in. This is where Republicans can blow races by nominating someone who is seen as far too extreme, or just far too detached from reality. They've certainly done so before. And while the primary season isn't over yet, it is looking more and more like Republicans are lining up behind some awfully sketchy personalities. They could be about to blow races that a more moderate or experienced Republican might have won. Even in a year with the wind at the Republicans' backs, the Democrats might wind up having a good Election Day when it comes to the Senate.

Of course, that would NEVER happen on the Democrat side, eh?? :^/

That's one of the things I miss most about the old Weigantia, pre PTDS...

CW would at least acknowledge the faults of the Democrat Party...

    I miss that..

I have already put forth the FACTS regarding these Senate races which are already seen as easy wins for the GOP..

Of course a lot of Democrats think that these states are easy wins for Democrats..

But then again, a lot of Democrats think that they will retain the House... A lot of Democrats think Biden's Handlers are doing a great job..

The meteorological term for it is called "wish casting"..

Suffice it to say that the Senate is comfortably going to be in the hands of the GOP, just like the House..

This is why the Senate as well as the House is going to be comfortably in the GOP's hands....

Democrats have absolutely NOTHING to run on...

All Democrats have is failure after failure after failure after failure...

Plus Democrats have the highest inflation in over 4 decades, a recession, a reputation for complete impotence and utter incompetence and a POTUS who has lower approval ratings than President Trump..

Today's commentary does not take ANY of that into account whatsoever...

All of the things listed are much more relevant to voters than personality..

You might’ve heard Joe Biden’s having a rough summer.

Actually, he’s lumbered through 11 straight months of unpleasantry.

After excising the most polarizing president in history from the White House, it took the 46th president only seven months for a plurality of Americans to sour on him.

Aug. 31, 2021 is marked by the data-crunching site FiveThirtyEight as the precise day Biden fell under water. You can see the the trajectory since; it’s only gotten worse.

Monmouth University released a poll of 978 adults on Tuesday. It found that just over a third — 36% — approve of Biden’s work in the White House.

Biden’s dip into negative territory late last summer came after what was widely seen as a calamitous — if not overdue — exit from Afghanistan. Then came the fall’s rippling supply shortages coupled with gradually rising prices for goods and services.

There is a whole all encompassing list of all the good President Trump did for America...

Biden and the Democrats have NOTHING good to show for their efforts and plenty.... PLENTY of bad..

Russian officials have begun to issue a series of threats to the United States in an attempt to fend off a war crimes tribunal, with top officials suggesting that Russia could be interested in going after Alaska next, which the United States purchased from Russian in 1867.

Russia’s lower house speaker, Vyacheslav Volodin, warned the United States ought to hesitate when seizing or freezing Russian assets abroad, and instead ought to remember that Alaska previously belonged to Russia.

Instead of the political and moral leadership the moment demands, Biden has offered a politics of appeasement.

It has been 12 days since the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and overturned the constitutional right to an abortion. So far, President Joe Biden has reacted to that news with one speech—not even a prime-time Oval Office speech, but a middle-of-the-afternoon “press event” that didn’t allow for actual questions—during which he said he “stands with” women. He evidently didn’t mean that literally: We have not seen Biden physically standing with any of the people who have been protesting the court’s decision. And he evidently didn’t mean it figuratively either: We have not seen Biden echoing, amplifying, or even agreeing with calls for immediate action to protect reproductive rights by people like Senator Elizabeth Warren or Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Cori Bush.

How To Think Like A Liberal Supreme Court Justice

Climate change’s causes and dangers are no longer subject to serious doubt. Modern science is “unequivocal that human influence”—in particular, the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide — “has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land.” Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Sixth Assessment Report, The Physical Science Basis: Headline Statements 1 (2021). The Earth is now warmer than at any time “in the history of modern civilization,” with the six warmest years on record all occurring in the last decade. U. S. Global Change Research Program, Fourth National Climate Assessment, Vol. I, p. 10 (2017); Brief for Climate Scientists as Amici Curiae 8. The rise in temperatures brings with it “increases in heat- related deaths,” “coastal inundation and erosion,” “more frequent and intense hurricanes, floods, and other extreme weather events,” “drought,” “destruction of ecosystems,” and “potentially significant disruptions of food production.” American Elec. Power Co. v. Connecticut, 564 U. S. 410, 417 (2011) (internal quotation marks omitted). If the current rate of emissions continues, children born this year could live to see parts of the Eastern seaboard swallowed by the ocean. See Brief for Climate Scientists as Amici Curiae 6. Rising waters, scorching heat, and other severe weather conditions could force “mass migration events[,] political crises, civil unrest,” and “even state failure.” Dept. of Defense, Climate Risk Analysis 8 (2021). And by the end of this century, climate change could be the cause of “4.6 million excess yearly deaths.” See R. Bressler, The Mortality Cost of Carbon, 12 Nature Communications 4467, p. 5 (2021).

Kagan bought into the Global Warming hysteria hook, line and sinker...

Let's look at some of the predictions made by those that Kagan cited..

This increase in global temperature causes a concomitant rise in global sea level as ocean water expands and land ice melts. Global mean temperature will likely rise at about 0.6 degrees Fahrenheit per decade and sea level at about 2.5 inches per decade over the next century. These rates are 3 to 6 times recent historical rates.
    -Michael Oppenheimer, 23 Jun 1988

Oppenheimer's prediction was way WAY off the mark and never happened..

Let's look at Oppenheimer's partner in crime, James Hansen..

"The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be under water," Hansen said. "And there will be tape across the windows across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won't be there. The trees in the median strip will change."
    -James Hansen, 23 Jun 1988

Obviously Hansen's alarmist fear-mongering claim did not age very well..

Obviously, even DEMOCRATS don't believe this load of BS coming from Democrat so-called "scientists"..

Why else did Odumbo buy an island estate for upwards of 20 million dollars??

Odumbo would be a moron to buy an island estate if it's going to be under water in 20 years.. :eyeroll:

Let's look at some more Democrat predictions..

[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots. … [By 1996] the Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers. … The Mexican police will round up illegal American migrants surging into Mexico seeking work as field hands.
    --Michael Oppenheimer, 1990

Another Democrat Global Warming prediction that didn't age well.. :^/

I could go on and on (and often do!! :D) but you get the idea..

Democrats' hysterical and fear-mongering Global Warming predictions have NEVER come to pass..

    NEVER....

So, one has to wonder why ANYONE would put stock in their continued predictions??

I can easily refute **ALL** Democrat hysterical Global Warming predictions with one simple quote from the IPCC..

It is not possible to make deterministic, definitive predictions of how climate will evolve over the next century and beyond as it is with short term weather forecasts. It is not even possible to make projections of the frequency of occurrence of all possible outcomes in the way that it might be possible with a calibrated probabilistic medium-range weather forecast.

Projections of climate change are uncertain, first because they are dependent primarily on scenarios of future anthropogenic and natural forcings that are uncertain, second because of incomplete understanding and imprecise models of the climate system and finally because of the existence of internal climate variability.
-IPCC Report, Chapter 12 Section 1

In other words, it's "NOT POSSIBLE" to make ANY reliable long term climate predictions..

So, ALL of the fear-mongering hysterical Chicken Little type crap coming from Democrats is just so much hysterical fear-mongering BS and can be safely ignored..

Here's the Surprising Backstory of the Downfall of Roe v. Wade

Starting in 2016, the ADF began to focus on challenging a core foundation of Roe – the issue of fetal viability. In Roe, the high court established that abortion was legal until the unborn child “has the capability of meaningful life outside the mother’s womb,” wrote Justice Blackmun in the majority opinion. In 1992, another Supreme Court decision on abortion, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, allowed states to place some restrictions on abortion while still embracing the concept that women have a right to get an abortion before viability. At the time, it was hard to define when such viability occurred, leading some abortion-rights advocates to claim it does not occur until birth.

But ongoing scientific advances have repeatedly redefined viability in the 50 years since Roe and the 30 years since Casey. It’s now generally agreed that children can survive outside the womb after as few as 20 weeks. Along the way, the viability standard had come to be seen as beneficial for pro-life legislatures’ attempts to restrict abortion to earlier in pregnancy.

In what is supposed to be a very Republican-friendly year, the GOP's chances of taking the Senate seem dimmer than ever. This is due to one very big reason: personality matters.

Also, that other very big reason being the ratification in 1913 of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States making it thereafter virtually impossible to gerrymander a seat to the United States Senate. :)

It was also Johnson who actually helpfully explained to an undercover reporter how Donald Trump lost Wisconsin:

Prior to this election, I was the No. 1 vote-getter statewide with just under 1.5 million votes," he said. "This election, Trump got 1,610,000. No Republican has ever cracked 1.5 million. Numerous Democrats have gone over 1.6 and 1.5 ... Just the Republican State Assembly candidates got 1,661,000. The eight congressional candidates also got 1,661,000."

Johnson added: "So we obviously counted enough Republican votes. The only reason Trump lost Wisconsin is that 51,000 Republican voters didn't vote for him. They voted for other Republican candidates."

"So you're telling me that Joe Biden won this state fair and square?" Windsor asked.

"Well, look at the totals. It's certainly plausible," Johnson replied. "There's nothing obviously skewed about the results."

Joe’s a lost cause: No plan, no hope from Biden, say blunt lefties

For Joe Biden, the calls are now coming from inside the house.

On a volatile group chat of left-leaning celebrities and Biden apparatchiks, CNN reports that anger was in the air. “Will & Grace” star Debra Messing was apparently yelling that there was no point to voting. She was “fed up!” When you’ve lost Debra Messing …

Meanwhile, former Obama political guru David Axelrod said the administration looks “out of control.”

Democrats had hoped the dramatic reversal of Roe v. Wade last month would be a boon to their prospects in November. That it would light a fire under their voters and drive them to the polls. But so far, the fire from the left is directed at the White House itself. Despite a norm-exploding leak from the court, the administration still was caught flat-footed when the decision dropped — aides were literally out getting coffee — leading to the president’s weak and widely panned remarks.

Does he have a plan? Spoiler alert for those who didn’t pay attention to Afghanistan, Build Back Better, COVID or any other bungled task: He doesn’t.

If all this coach was doing was wanting to pray privately to himself, on his own, after a game ended then this would never have been an issue.

This became an issue when he started announcing to the team that he would be leading a prayer after the game on the 50 yard line and that he had invited the opposing team to join them. The coach had been warned by the school district that he was not to lead a prayer service because there could be players who felt pressured to attend and participate.

Teenagers have a strong desire to "fit in" and could also fear not being viewed as favorably by the coach if they did not participate.

Justice Gorsuch wrote for the majority: “Here, a government entity sought to punish an individual for engaging in a brief, quiet, personal religious observance doubly protected” by the Constitution.

But this was anything BUT a "brief, quiet, personal religious observance". The coach announced it in an interview with the local paper that he intended to hold the prayer service after the game.

Because the oceans are slow to heat, there is a lag between emissions and full manifestation of corresponding warming -- a lag of perhaps 40 years. The world is now 1 degree F warmer than a century ago and may become another one or more degrees warmer EVEN IF EMISSIONS ARE ENDED TODAY.

I have read papers about lag of ocean warming, his claims have been corroborated.

I'd been trying to think of a way to discuss the greenhouse effect in a way that would make sense to average readers. I wasn't asking for hard scientific studies. It wasn't an academic interview. It was a discussion with a kind and thoughtful man who answered the question. You can find the description in two of my books, most recently The Coming Storm.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that JL wouldn't confuse a contract term used to clarify which female parent is being discussed with forcing him to use legal language to describe someone. If he did, he'd already be referring to you as "Defendant."

It's good, Elizabeth! I just broke 200 miles/320 km this morning and even though my back didn't hurt last year I only walked 304mi/486km the entire year, so I'm pretty pleased. It's hot as blazes down in the valley but only 21°C here at 2200m. I've gone back to scrolling through the comment spam so it's been a good Weigantia for me today.

So, I have no love for religious fanatics.. Or any kind of other fanatics to be honest..

Your attempt at self-introspection is an obvious epic fail.

But what I hate is for people to be discriminated against and attacked for sincere beliefs that cause no harm to no one..

Said the guy who whined incessantly and attacked the NFL football players for taking a knee in silent protest on the sidelines that caused "no harm to no one"; your hatred spilleth over for their sincere beliefs.

So, while I might roll my eyes at the football coach who wants to pray on the 50 yard line, I will respect his right to do so and will fight to protect his rights..

Since I'm the resident Troll Translator, allow me to assist.

Translation: As long as it's somebody taking a knee that fits the right-wing worldview and propaganda drivel and spew that I regurgitate, but if it's a player on the sidelines, I not only won't "fight to protect his rights," I'll shit all over his rights on a regular basis because I am a slave to Trump and my right-wing propaganda media talking head handlers.

    It's all about respect..

    As if.

Thank you for the grammar check.. :eyeroll:

That isn't grammar, it's spelling; a grammar check would have obviously involved me explaining that the end of a sentence requires only one period.

    Details matter.

    Yea, that's what I said...

No, it isn't. You claimed it was a "meteorological term" when it isn't.

    Facts say otherwise..

A term that meteorologists use doesn't necessarily constitute the word(s) being a "meteorological term." It's like claiming that "map" is a "meteorological term" when it isn't.

If you think I'm clicking your link, you've lost your mind... oh, wait!

    I accept your concession.. :D

My concession wasn't given so you've admitted you got nothing. :)

I am in control here.. Not you.. Not Kick...

Around here, we refer to misguided posters who believe they actually can control the blog as being a "Don Harris." The original DH effed around and found out how much control he had, and you seem to be following in his tiny footsteps so don't blame any of the other posters on this comments section if they begin referring to you as "Don Harris 2.0"... heh.

Which has no relevance here because I am not part of the GOP base..

The constant sucking of the Trump "baby man carrot" (props to Russ) is a definite giveaway when determining the "GOP base." Those who holster Donald Trump in this comments section on a regular basis (archived for all posterity) and freely admit to worshipping the man are definitely a part of the "GOP base."

Unless you are referring to yourself.... :eyeroll:

Pathetic retort and NOT even a good try, DH2.

You should definitely work on that admitted control issue of yours. :)

    Bullshit...

Yes, your constant ignorant prattling nonsense fits that exact description.

You beat up some asshole who is being a jerk, it's assault..

You beat up some asshole who is a jerk AND gay... It's assault.. AND a hate crime..

Your inveterate ignorance of the law is showing... again. It's only a hate crime if you beat him up because he is gay and you're an asshole. Your intent (as always) would have to be proven with evidence... in the same manner you offer up evidence of your ignorance of the law here in this comments section on a regular basis.

    Unequal treatment under the law...

No, that's your ignorance regarding the law rearing its pathetic head again. If a gay person beat you up because you are a swinger who is on record stating that he enjoys it up the backside, he too could be charged with a hate crime. Your bone deep ignorance regarding the law should definitely be illegal.

Hate crimes can be perpetrated by all races, creeds, colors, and sexual orientations. Not rocket science.

So, please.. Take your "Gays aren't asking for special rights" bullshit and shove it..

I would wager Russ (and Bashi, obviously) is infinitely aware where you would like it shoved.

Jussie Smollett was certainly expecting "special rights"... And he has PLENTY of Democrats willing to go to bat for him..

Jussie Smollet called and said you can stop speaking for him too and also said to let you know he wasn't interested and the rent you owe for living in his head is long overdue. :)

I lean hetero but that's one Trumptrain I'd travel over State lines to "board."

Watch: @welcher will thank me for ... what did he call it? Name checking him.

    *smh*
