A Rather Unique Perspective

[ Posted Tuesday, June 16th, 2020 – 16:25 UTC ]

I have to admit I am seeing the protest movement across America from a rather strange viewpoint. I live in one of the most liberal areas of one of the most liberal states in the country, and here the citizens are deeply grieving... a police officer who lost his life. You can see why this is a rather unique lens through which to view what is currently going on.

The officer in question was a sheriff's deputy who responded to a call about a white van filled with dangerous weapons. He was ambushed and killed by a member of the U.S. Air Force who, after being apprehended, was charged not only with the deputy's murder but also with the earlier murder of the only federal law enforcement officer killed in the recent unrest anywhere in the entire country. This happened during one of the first nights of demonstrations, up in Oakland, California.

Now, my county doesn't see police officers killed very often. The news reported that the last sheriff's deputy to die in the line of fire happened in the 1980s. So this was a big event, and the populace has been memorializing the slain officer ever since -- despite (as mentioned) being an area that could honestly be called "ultra-liberal." We've seen heaps of flowers laid in honor and public mourning by just about everyone, for a brave local police officer.

But what seems strange about this whole incident, to me at least, is that while the national news media covered the Oakland shooting when it happened (it was seen as part of the protest, at the time), and while the shooting of the deputy was also national news for a short time, the media networks have almost completely ignored developments in the case ever since (I could be wrong about this -- the measure of whether this really is being broadly covered or not is how much of the following you have personally heard about). And there have been major developments, the latest being that the shooter was allegedly the same man in both murders. Here's a local update on the story:

Federal prosecutors filed murder and other charges against Travis Air Force Sgt. Steven Carrillo in the shooting death of Federal Protective Service officer Dave Underwood, who was killed in a hail of gunfire during a night of George Floyd unrest on May 29 while he stood watch over Oakland's federal building.

Carrillo was already in custody in Santa Cruz County jail for the special enhancement murder of Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller and the attempted murder of several other deputies in an ambush on June 6th in the mountain community of Ben Lomond. The charges carry with them the possibility of [sic] death sentence.

The evidence linking the two crimes was a white 1992 Ford Cargo van. U.S. Attorney David Anderson said the same van was used in both crimes. An AR-15 rifle recovered at the Santa Cruz crime scene was used in both shootings. Federal officials described the AR-15 as a "ghost weapon" -- a gun self-built from parts and not purchased from a manufacturer.

A [sic] armored vest also discovered in a vehicle belonging to Carrillo contained a distinct patch and slogans scrolled in what is believed to be Carrillo's blood on a vehicle carjacked during the Santa Cruz ambush linked the suspected gunman to the Boogaloo Movement -- a right-wing extremist group that harbors a mistrust of law enforcement and government, and anticipates a second American Civil War, referred to as the "boogaloo."

From another local news report which was published earlier:

A former friend of Carrillo's -- Justin Ehrhardt, who served in the Air Force with him before retiring -- said Carrillo's Facebook posts point to a right-wing extremist group that includes former and active military members. In particular, Carrillo was sharing memes about the so-called "Boogaloo" movement that considers itself a libertarian anti-government citizen militia that is preparing for the next American civil war. Last week, the FBI arrested three adherents to the Boogaloo movement in Nevada, charging them with inciting violence with Molotov cocktails and other explosives at protests over the death of George Floyd.

Carrillo considered himself a libertarian, Ehrhardt said, speculating that police use of force during the protests may have pushed him over the edge.

"Excessive use of force on unarmed civilians -- that was a huge thing for him," Ehrhardt said. "It was a mental tipping point for him." Ehrhardt imagined it was Carrillo's way of saying, "If I'm going to fight for something, it's going to be against the establishment."

From the official federal complaint [PDF version] just filed against Carrillo:

Based on my experience and information I have learned in the course of this investigation, I believe that "Boogaloo" is a term used by extremists to reference a violent uprising or impending civil war in the United States. I am aware that the Boogaloo movement is not a defined group, and I believe that, in general, followers of the Boogaloo ideology may identify as militia and share a narrative of inciting a violent uprising against perceived government tyranny.

The federal case against Carrillo seems pretty airtight, at this point, since the driver of the van in Oakland, Robert Alvin Justus, has "turned himself in to the F.B.I. and has come forward with information on the case." F.B.I. spokesman Jack Bennett announced the newly-filed federal charges, and explained what led to them:

Bennett said evidence developed in the case showed communication between Carrillo and others talking about using the George Floyd demonstration planned for Oakland that night as a cover to kill Underwood and wound his partner.

"We believe Carrillo and Justus chose this date because of the planned protest in Oakland," Bennett said. "It provided them to target multiple law enforcement personnel and to avoid apprehension due to the large crowds attending the demonstrations. As described in detail in the complaint, we believe Justice drove the white van."

"We believe that messages exchanged between Carrillo, Justus and others that day before the shooting in Oakland indicate a plan to travel to Oakland and attack federal enforcement officers. To be clear, Carrillo elected to travel to Oakland to conduct this murder and take advantage of a time when this nation was mourning the killing of George Floyd."

So, to review: a member of a loose-knit anti-government right-wing group decided to use the protests against the murder of George Floyd to start his own personal second Civil War by murdering a federal officer. As one of those articles noted, three other members of this group were arrested in Las Vegas for using explosives at other Floyd protests.

And yet the national media has (so far, from what I've seen) largely ignored all of this. A far-right group is hijacking the protests against police brutality to wage open warfare against the police. They are nothing short of agents provocateurs, using the cover of a protest to commit violence against the government, in the hopes of sparking further violence by the protesters.

Since the beginning of the wave of protests, President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr have continually tried to pin all the violence on "left-wing Antifa groups." To date, they have provided not a shred of evidence to back up this incendiary claim. There in no one in federal custody charged with being a member of Antifa, but there are now five people being held who have been linked to a violent right-wing movement. You know how I know (without even bothering to research it) that there are no Antifa members currently being charged? Because if this were the case, then Donald Trump would be talking about it roughly 50 times each and every day. The name or names would be repeated by Trump and Barr over and over and they'd be pointing the finger of blame in as big a way as they could manage. None of that has happened -- which is why I know they haven't yet found any Antifa scapegoat to blame all the violence on.

I understand why Trump and his minions have not addressed the disconnect between their anti-Antifa rhetoric and the reality of right-wing group members being arrested. It's easy to see why they would choose this political route, in other words, even if it should be condemned as nothing short of official government propaganda.

What I do not understand, however, is why the media is also largely ignoring these developments. They've drilled down in a microscopic way into all aspects of the demonstrations, but they've somehow missed this big story. Perhaps I am wrong, and perhaps the new federal charges will put this story back in the news tonight. But it's really hard to understand why this aspect of it has been downplayed to such an extent.

So, as I began, I am seeing one particular incident in the ongoing protests against police brutality with a rather unique viewpoint. I am watching a very local incident closely, in an ultra-liberal county that is mourning the death of a police officer. Today's developments in this story seem to point to much larger questions the media really should be asking -- both of themselves and of President Trump and Attorney General Barr. Because at this point, I want to know what exactly is the F.B.I. doing about the violent right-wing Boogaloo movement?

Yes, sir. Unbeknownst to them, they were infiltrated by an undercover agent of the FBI and eventually arrested on May 30 before the downtown Black Lives Matter peaceful protest where they had planned to toss Molotov cocktails at police.

I am glad this isn't just a local story and has now risen to the level of national news once again.

It's some interesting reading wherein FBI UCE infiltrated a group of these right-wing extremists who'd planned to target the power converter within one of the NV Energy power substations in Las Vegas.

The reason this is not front and center and headlines on page 1 in bold with Trump and Barr talking about it endlessly and on permanent loop is precisely because it is right-wingnut conspirators.

But the U.S. no longer has a militia system.

I wish the media would get real and stop helping these nuts with their delusional propaganda. They are "armed terrorist gangs", not militia. If that's too long for a good lead, call them "armed gangs".

On your concerns that the story of the killings of law enforcement officers in California by right-wing nuts hasn't been getting coverage, I have to disagree. I remember reading about it as it happened, including the encouraging news that the FBI had infiltrated and brought down the mini-terrorist cell that was plotting to spread chaos and death. I know the FBI has been under pressure from Barr and Trump to follow the party line that there is no such thing as white supremacist domestic terrorism, but at least some of those agents know a threat to the public safety when they see it.

Well, you do go "on and on" whining a lot, but you don't seem all too interested in facts. Opinions are not facts.

    Take Officer Chauvin for instance..

NO ONE here can give me any facts to indicate he did something wrong...

    FACT: Chauvin isn't an officer.
FACT: Chauvin was fired and charged with multiple counts of murder.
FACT: You frequently claim no one gives facts when lots of people are doing it.
FACT: That's why people discuss things and leave you out of it.

Officer Rolf in Atlanta... Same thing..

    FACT: It's Rolfe.
FACT: Rolfe is not an officer either. He got fired.
FACT: Rolfe has been charged with eleven counts, including murder.
FACT: Never told Brooks he was under arrest.
    FACT: Didn't follow procedure.
FACT: Shot a man in the back twice.

NO FACTS to support he did anything wrong..

Plenty of facts, and with eleven counts of various assorted charges including murder, multiple weapons charges... that whole "duty to intervene" (a fact that applies also to the Floyd case), I would wager without hesitation that there will be a conviction on at least one of them.

Is it possible in ya'all's eyes that a white police officer can shoot a black person and it be justified??

    Yes.

    Is that possible??

    Yes, of course.

What would that scenario look like???

It's a stupid question designed to keep the discussion focused on other posters versus political issues. I would wager that is the reason no one wants to discuss it with you... in addition to your inherent inability to grasp facts while constantly whining that none have been offered, of course.

So, while we don’t like ignoring the fact that these are perfectly legitimate protests, we also don’t like losing money. So players and coaches alike will do as they’re told or pay a steep price.”

Tubolls says the fines will also extend to visiting teams, and that if they don’t like it, they’re welcome to sit in the locker room during the anthem where nobody can see them expressing their opinions. “There is no opinion. Our fans are pretty racist. We’re not willing to piss them off. They only like black people when they score touchdowns.”

    ... continued

If they refuse, they are fired....

Like the headline says: "ANY" player kneeling. Oh, and "the fines will also extend to visiting teams, and that if they don’t like it, they’re welcome to sit in the locker room during the anthem where nobody can see them expressing their opinions." *ROTFLMAO*

There are no 1st Amendment Rights when yer on someone else's clock...

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The First Amendment contains rights that definitely apply to people who work for other people. If you weren't a dumb ass, you'd probably stop posting stupid shit like this.

But back to that satire you posted as fact:

    * "They won't stand for kneeling."
    * "A Trump-supporting town of pseudo-patriots."
    * "Our fans are pretty racist."
    * "They only like black people when they score touchdowns."
    * "The white players have it rough, having to appear as though they care..."

    *laughs*

It is a fact that there are a large portion of rubes who don't quite grasp the concept of spoofing; nuance just isn't something they're capable of processing. Is your mind so damn simple that you can't ascertain satire when you see it?

    It's really that simple..

    *laughs*

"The only way to end racism is to stop talking about it..."

    Could not POSSIBLY agree more...

We've covered this before, but it's no surprise you can't remember shit. You're misquoting the man again and still taking his words out of context... a fairly normal occurrence for you:

Can you very simply get rid of a fabricating poster like Michale if you stop talking about him? Does it surprise anyone that the uneducated goober misquoted someone yet again? I doubt it.

The conversation Michale is referring to occurred on 60 Minutes. Freeman didn't say: "There is a very simple way to get rid of racism."

Obviously, if you listen to what he actually said in context, he was saying he didn't feel the need to be "classified" as anything except an American.

WALLACE: Black History Month, you find …

    FREEMAN: Ridiculous.

    WALLACE: Why?

FREEMAN: You’re going to relegate my history to a month?

    WALLACE: Come on.

FREEMAN: What do you do with yours? Which month is White History Month? Come on, tell me.

    WALLACE: I’m Jewish.

FREEMAN: OK. Which month is Jewish History Month?

    WALLACE: There isn’t one.

FREEMAN: Why not? Do you want one?

    WALLACE: No, no.

FREEMAN: I don’t either. I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history.

WALLACE: How are we going to get rid of racism until …?

FREEMAN: Stop talking about it. I’m going to stop calling you a white man. And I’m going to ask you to stop calling me a black man. I know you as Mike Wallace. You know me as Morgan Freeman. You’re not going to say, “I know this white guy named Mike Wallace.” Hear what I’m saying?

If you're stupid enough to believe this interview meant that Morgan Freeman believed racism would disappear if no one talked about it, then you're moron enough to fall for the Trump Con and stupid enough to worship at the alter of Benedict Donald a.k.a Treasonous Trump. #Misquote #Gullible

I can keep reposting these facts until they "sink in" since your memory has issues of being practically nonexistent. :)

I see where the Quake Oats Co. is dropping the image of Aunt Jemima from their syrup and pancake mix, also Uncle Ben has to go from rice products. Local Idaho high schools are doing away with their Indian team name and mascots.

Raises the question in my mind about the old Quaker guy on the oats cartons, and Colonel Sanders on McDonalds advertising??

Do white images have to go also, or do they need to be replaced with black images??

Maybe some of you Weigantian PC authorities could explain for me?

    Easy peasey question, C.R.S. --

I talked it over with the Comrades and there's broad conseses that Colonel Sanders can STAY.

If... he gets a sex change operation.

They held the funeral for Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller here yesterday, and it was a big event. Helicopters in "missing man" formation flew all around the county while it happened. His wife is pregnant, making it all the more tragic.

I hope so. I remember when, during Dubya's reign, someone at the FBI (? I think?) got reamed for suggesting that a whole lot of returning soldiers were being recruited into rightwing violent organizations. The GOP was aghast... that anyone would even suggest such a thing was real. Dubya, as I recall, then disbanded the group at the FBI who had been tasked to track rightwing violent groups.

I thought about adding a historical paragraph or two to say "this is nothing new," since it's been going on for almost the entire history of the FBI (see J. Edgar Hoover and COINTELPRO) and even before, with the "red squads." Leftwing groups are scrutinized heavily, but the rightwing ones never seem to get much attention. 'Twas always thus...

OK, I'll admit that some white cops can shoot a black man and it was justified. But you've got to admit that racist cops do in fact exist. Not every cop is racist -- far from it. But it's not some sort of myth. So turnabout is fair play -- can you admit that?

    ListenWhenYouHear [33] -

Heard one interesting comment the other day: "Back in World War II, the entire U.S. Army was 'Antifa.'"

    Heh.

    MtnCaddy [41] -

I definitely think that reviving Col Sanders by dressing others up as him is a really stupid thing for KFC to do, mostly because it turns him into a caricature. Granted, he was pretty close to a caricature even when alive, but they seem to have no respect for his memory at all.

Not saying I'm a big fan of CS or anything, just that the new ads are really stupid, that's all.

I might have to file a complaint with the PD that Russ's husband works for.. Shouldn't be too difficult to ascertain which Department he works for.. Russ has left plenty of clues..

Yep.. I think a complaint is definitely warranted...

Wow. You just pulled a Trump! You, a private citizen(!) just mimicked Cheetogod by threatening some form of legal woe upon someone for speaking out.

Do you get a special badge or patch for emulating Trump like that? You know, in yer Trump club?

Michale you are living the dream, man! The Cheetogod's Vision for America® dream. Way to go "all in."
