Reasons To Be Thankful

[ Posted Wednesday, November 23rd, 2022 – 16:35 UTC ]

I should begin with a program note: this will be the last column for this week. See you back here next Monday! I am taking the vacation off because really, who wants to read about politics over Thanksgiving weekend anyway?

It's been a slow political week in the news (other than all the bad news on the legal front for Donald Trump), so instead of chasing stories today I thought I would just make a little list of things I am personally thankful for and leave it at that.

This isn't a definitive list, of course. I am also thankful for my friends and my loving family; from my wonderful wife to all the relatives I now zoom with on a regular basis (COVID sparked a lot of changes that have indeed improved life, all of which I am thankful for as well). And I am thankful for personal reasons as well, but those type of thanks are really reserved for pre-turkey-gobbling remarks around the dinner table and not for public consumption.

Instead, here are the ones I would like to share with all my readers. I hope that you and yours have a very thankful day yourselves and eat until you are stuffed. [And for our Canadian readers, please backdate this column to last month, so it is appropriate for the northern version of Thanksgiving!]

I am thankful this year for...

  • ...the fact that I am able to write public columns critical of the government and have never had to worry I will suffer any sort of legal consequences for doing so. The First Amendment protects me, as a quasi-member of the only profession or business mentioned in the United States Constitution: the press. And I am thankful for this each and every day.
  • ...President Joe Biden. He has his flaws (which of us do not?) and he certainly wasn't my first choice for the Democrats to nominate, but he has done an admirable job with the mess he inherited. His hands will be somewhat tied for the next two years and he will have to put up with fever-swamp investigations out of the MAGA House, but I fully expect him to continue functioning through this period. Biden has already achieved an admirable record of legislation and executive actions that will far outlast his own presidency.
  • ...Barack Obama reappearing (however briefly) on the political stage, campaigning for Democrats just before the election. You forget how good he is at the whole "giving a rousing speech" thing until you see it again.
  • ...Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, of whom it is being said could be the most powerful and effective speaker ever. She ran her chamber of Congress like clockwork, and we're all about to see the flip side of this -- how chaotic things can get with a very weak and ineffectual speaker. The contrast will be stark, that much seems guaranteed.
  • ...John Fetterman, who showed how Democrats can run and win even though they're just average guys. Authenticity is a rare thing in politics, but he's got it, that much is crystal-clear. Or maybe "beer-mug-clear" would be more appropriate?
  • ...Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and all her fellow progressives, who successfully moved Biden from his usual centrist position to supporting an agenda which (had it been fully enacted) would have been the most progressive since at least Lyndon Baines Johnson's "Great Society" measures.
  • ...all the states which denied the "election-deniers" (whom I prefer to call "Big Lie adherents") the high offices where they might have had the power to overturn the will of the people.
  • ...the fact that there was no reported violence on Election Day this year, despite the very tangible fear of it occurring. Perhaps we are indeed better than that, and perhaps our democracy is healthier than we might have thought. America descending into regular political violence is a terrifying thought, so I'm glad it hasn't fully taken root here yet.
  • ...elections workers everywhere. Their job in normal times is a pretty thankless one -- they are like unto the projectionists in movie theaters. When the film runs perfectly, nobody even knows they are there. When things screw up, they have to take the heat of everyone yelling at them. That's a mild comparison, because now elections workers have to regularly put up with death threats and threats against their families, which is just wrong and disgusting and should be condemned by all. So I am thankful for the job they do, each and every one of them.
  • ...the voters across this land who absolutely refused to produce the vaunted "red wave" on Election Day. People vote for all kinds of reasons, and most of them are never even discussed (or only moronically so) in political pontificating by the inside-the-Beltway punditry. To whom I say: better luck next time, guys.
  • ...young voters and women voters who turned out in droves and proved that abortion is a powerful "wedge issue" once again, but this time the wedge cuts the other way and the anti-abortion side now quakes in its boots at the prospect of ballot initiatives appearing even in very red states in the next few elections. As well they should, because when people have a say in things they almost always vote for expanding freedoms, not constricting them.
  • ...the fact that the COVID pandemic has lessened to the point where it does not rule our daily lives again. Families are getting back together again, some for the first time in years.
  • ...Dr. Fauci, who has also had to fight off outrageous slings and arrows of conspiratorial nonsense from his detractors, for no real reason. Which he has done with aplomb throughout the crisis.
  • ...justice, where the wheels grid slow but hopefully grind effectively and completely.
  • ...the fact that World War III hasn't broken out. Yet, at any rate.

    (and finally, to close on:)

  • ...the National Parks. Best government dollar ever spent, without question.

Have a happy Thanksgiving everyone!

20th/21st Russian Nuclear Doctrine is like EVERYBODY’S 20th/21st century Nuclear Doctrine: nobody wants to inadvertently destroy humanity/themselves. Can ya blame a nuclear power for feeling the WEIGHT of this peril?

I can’t, and I’m thankful to relate to Weigantia that Rooskie Nuclear Launch Protocol requires not just Putin but also TWO other Senior Defense Officials (Chief of Staff-ABSOLUTELY and Minister of Defense-LESS CERTAIN) to simultaneously turn the key and guarantee their own demise. All those billions, lost for good.

Every nuclear power knows and strives to NOT fry THEMSELVES. It would be something kinda OBVIOUS to the “two-center mass/two in the head” crowd seeking “just a word” with Vladimir Vladomirivich [aka #TwoBrainCells hero Putin/Trump’s Handler.]

Furthermore, Putin has been waving around his nuclear dick TO NO EFFECT for, like, since he took power in 2000. Nuclear blackmail only persuades the folks who automatically wet themselves. Thing of it is, the respective governments don’t.

Fetterman has brain damage. This is documented fact. He can't articulate and he can't understand complex ideas..

By ANY factual definition, that disqualifies him from serving..

Due to his disability, he couldn't serve in the US Military. Due to his disability he couldn't serve as a Police officer, or any other public official..

He is disabled.. Period. But, according to Democrats, that makes him PERFECT for being a US Senator..

Which says a lot more about Democrats than it does about Fetterman...

He just made one too many unforced errors.

NONE of which is any kind of relevance compared to Fetterman's mental disability...

    Liz,

The thing about Fetterman is that he and his fellow Democrats lied to the American people about the state of his health when the truth about it was so obviously to the contrary.

    An EXCELLENT point..

For ALL of Oz's failings, some real but mostly imagined, the FACTS, not to mention logical and rational thought, proved beyond ANY doubt that Oz was the better choice for US Senator..

The fact that Fetterman won simply proves the depth of hatred that Democrats and yes, some independents, have for the GOP and the country..

They hate the GOP and the country so deep that they would vote for a brain-damaged liar and mama's boy who never had a real job over a successful surgeon...

Of course, what do I know, he might be capable of voting against his party - I really don't know him well enough. But, I do know the Republican record on the economy and on a few other important issues and I doubt that he would be voting against any of those related Republican policies, so ...

You demonstrated absolutely nothing! If anything, your lack of demonstrating anything to support your argument means that it is actually your claim that is DEMONSTRABLY complete and utter BS! It also shows that your ability to understand complex ideas is just as questionable as Trumps.

Funny thing about Trump having been a Democrat... he realized that Republicans are far more gullible and easier to grift than Democrats would be. Probably just looked at how many Republicans signed up for Trump University and realized how easy it would be to get the mouth breathers' vote! Trump calls ya'll gullible idiots... and you thank him for it! Sad.

No. What's sad is that you constantly spew complete and utter BS that you have absolutely NO FACTS to support.

*I* made the statement that Fetterman has brain-damage and is mentally challenged and deficient.. *I* provided FACTS (Fetterman's debate performance) that PROVES my statement is factually valid.

YOU conceded that my facts were valid..

You see how that works, Russ.

Portland store shuts down, posts blistering note on front door slamming rampant crime: 'city is in peril'

The store owner says business can't operate 'in our city’s current state'

A Portland, Oregon, clothing shop permanently shut down this month after facing a string of break-ins that has left the store financially gutted, according to a note posted to the front of the store.

"Our city is in peril," a printed note posted on Rains PDX store reads, according to KATU2. "Small businesses (and large) cannot sustain doing business, in our city’s current state. We have no protection, or recourse, against the criminal behavior that goes unpunished. Do not be fooled into thinking that insurance companies cover losses. We have sustained 15 break-ins … we have not received any financial reimbursement since the 3rd."

The store’s owner Marcy Landolfo said that after 15 break-ins over the last year and a half, the business can’t survive the financial burdens the crimes have cost the shop.

You know you and I are on the same page vis a vis the whole US/Ukraine debacle..

But we differ on expanding NATO...

NATO's entire history is one of benign influence, working for the betterment of all countries and the world in general..

There is no cause nor reason for ANYONE to fear an expanding NATO..

Only the dictators and tyrants and those unworthy of leadership would fear an expanding NATO..

Personally, I would like to see NATO drop their geographical requirements for membership and let any country in the world join NATO..

Personally, I would LOVE to see Israel and South Korea be members of NATO..

    @liz,

part of why i don't accept your version of the events in urkaine is that it rests on a simplistic interpretation of russian motives. based on the other moves putin has made for the past 20+ years, my opinion is that protecting russia's borders from NATO was never more than a pretext, and if that one hadn't been available he'd have found another. we certainly underestimated his ambition, but clearly not his goals or motivations. if anything, we erred on the side of too much caution - the only thing that might have prevented an invasion is a more thorough pre-arming of ukraine, not an earlier capitulation.
