Ukrainian Military On The March

[ Posted Tuesday, October 4th, 2022 – 15:49 UTC ]

Once again, the Ukrainian military has impressed the world and humiliated Vladimir Putin's Russia. Whole Russian battlefronts are collapsing, in two major areas of the country. In one, the Russians apparently were ordered to pull back, but in the other they were just plain overrun by Ukrainian advances. Militarily, significant gains have been made (and are being made, even as I write this), but there is still a whole lot of occupied territory left for Ukraine to retake (just to keep things in perspective). But for the time being, Ukraine has scored both a psychological victory and a very real military one on the ground.

Let's look at the two collapsing fronts in detail before trying to assess what this means for the larger war effort. Please refer to this current war map while reading, which is where I'm getting most of my information from (this map is constantly being updated, so my references to anything on it might already be from an older image, I should mention).

First, the northeast -- specifically the area from the town of Lyman north. Before this wave of the Ukrainian offensive, they had already seized an astonishing amount of ground, from Izyum north all the way to the Russian border. The easternmost boundary of this conquest was the Oskil River. The town of Kupiansk was on the frontline, essentially.

The most recent push was mostly in the south of this region, as the Ukrainians advanced upon, almost encircled, and then retook the town of Lyman. When the Russians pulled back from Lyman at the last possible moment, they also appeared to cede a large swath of ground north to the Russian border as well. In essence, the Russian forces fell back to the political boundary between Ukrainian territories (or "oblasts"). You can see them on the map as dotted brown lines. The recent area of fighting is near intersection of the border of three of these territories. The Ukrainians liberated Lyman in one of them -- which humiliated Putin, one day after he had declared this territory part of Russia -- and then the border between the other two zigzags northward. When the Russians fell back from the Oskil River to the territorial boundary, the Ukrainians completely pushed them out of the Kharkiv Oblast -- a major victory. The city of Kharkiv was roughly where this Ukrainian counteroffensive began, so they've successfully regained control of a huge swath of land.

They haven't stopped, either. Their next major objective is obviously the linked cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk. They've been pushing to get close to the city already for weeks, but now the forces which retook Lyman have moved on and are going to attempt to take the town of Kreminna. This is strategically important, as you can see by examining the roads (the solid orange lines on the map). If the Ukrainians take Kreminna, it will cut off a major supply route to the north from Russia itself. This won't completely cut these twin cities off, but it will make resupplying the forces there a lot more difficult for the Russians. If Kreminna is retaken, the Ukrainians will most likely continue to encircle the two cites, in an attempt to cut it off completely. This would be a political victory as well, as the Luhansk Oblast (where Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk lie) was another one of the territories Putin just "annexed."

If the Ukrainians do actually succeed in liberating the two cities, they would have the possibility of reclaiming an enormous amount of ground, as there just aren't that many population centers to the east or north in the whole Luhansk province. But that's getting pretty far into the future. For now, if the Ukrainians can take Kreminna and cut off that supply line north into Russia, they'll be in a very good military position indeed.

In the south and to the west, a more-orderly withdrawal is happening within the Russian lines. Ukrainian troops have been attacking everywhere along the slice of land to the west of the Dnieper River, but up until very recently have only had rather limited success. There has been one big push towards Kherson, but the progress has been very slow. The Russian forces all along this frontline are much more experienced and tougher fighters than what they've deployed in the northeast.

But the river has been key -- the newer missile systems the United States have given the Ukrainians have allowed them to destroy all the bridges (even ad hoc pontoon bridges) over the river, which essentially completely cuts off the resupply routes for all the Russian troops on the west side of the river. This finally seems to be taking a big toll. At the northern end of this slice of battlefield, all the towns now marked in grey (or "Ukrainian-held") were not too long ago held by Russians. The Ukrainians successfully pinched off the biggest one and the Russians pulled back in an absolute rout. Mind you, this wasn't immediate, the way it has been in the north. There was no blitzkrieg nature to it -- the Russians successfully held all those towns for a very long time. The biggest gain for the Ukrainians before the past few days was the town of Novovorontsovka, on the western bank of the big reservoir of the Dnieper River. But there things stood, for weeks. Finally, though, the Ukrainians were able to push southward along the banks of the river, and the Russians were afraid whole towns would become encircled and cut off, so they pulled back in a major way. How big this pullback will become still isn't clear yet. They could try to reform a frontline and hold it, or they could just pull all the way back to the eastern side of the river and try to hang on to Kherson. Taking Kherson would be the big prize here, obviously, for the Ukrainians. If they controlled the entire west bank of the Dnieper, they will have made a major strategic gain. When this drive started, the Ukrainians were fighting to hold Mykolaiv, but taking back Kherson would be a major blow to the Russian position. The next military objective for the Ukrainians would be the border of the Crimea.

Of course, as I mentioned at the start, when you zoom out on that map, you can see that although this week's gains are impressive and should be celebrated, the Russians still hold a lot of Ukrainian territory. The war's end is nowhere in sight, to put this another way.

Another point to bring things into perspective: the Ukrainians are making such a frenzied push right now for two big reasons. The first is the approaching winter, when fighting will get harder. The second is the fact that Putin just called up 300,000 reservists, to bolster his fighting forces -- but they'll take awhile to actually get into the field. Ukraine thus sees it as imperative to take as much ground as they can right now, when the Russian soldiers in the field are weaker and more exhausted.

But the psychological aspects to the war are definitely running in the Ukrainian's favor. Putin's conscripting hundreds of thousands of Russian men is not going well back home, to put it bluntly. Hundreds of thousands of Russian men have already fled the country to neighboring states like Georgia, to escape the draft. There are massive protests against the new military draft all over Russia -- which is an unusual occurrence, to put it mildly. And the biggest hawks in Russia -- both in the government and what passes for their media -- are loudly expressing their displeasure with how the war is going and for the generals who are leading the Russian effort. This too is unusual in such a totalitarian country. Putin's hand appears to be weakening at home as his military keeps getting beat on the battlefield, which are both rather astonishing developments.

In other words, it is far too early to make sweeping statements like "the tide has turned," but for the time being the momentum is unquestionably on the Ukrainians' side. Putin could be getting desperate after suffering so much humiliation, so much so that he's now openly threatening to use tactical nukes within Ukraine. Doing so would be an incredible provocation and escalation, and the entire rest of the world would likely be united in condemning such an action. It would also risk the United States getting a lot more involved in the fight, although how this might happen is so far unspecified and unknowable.

As I concluded after the first blitzkrieg victories in the Ukrainian counteroffensive, this war is nowhere near over and won't be for a very long time. At the same time, it is impossible to come to any other conclusion than that the Ukrainian military is in the midst of having a very good week.

Whoever of 300,000 or even 3 million isn't trained and equipped properly, no sure thing in Putin's Russia, will die or surrender in Ukraine. Long distance ordinance is simply too effective for human wave attacks.

Putin won't use tactical nukes -- as that flunks the cost benefit analysis and could literally blow back. If fought conventionally Ukraine has or will have 750,000 under arms while the Russians went in with 200,000 and I, too, don't see it ending before next year sometime.

But remove Putin and a peace restoring pre-2014 borders becomes immediately doable. Bonus points if they hand Vlad over to The Hague. But bullet in the brain is fine.

This is a quick resolution scenario.

The former CNN star’s premiere of his new show “Cuomo” on NewsNation pulled in just 147,000 total viewers on Monday night, according to figures released by Nielsen Media Research.

Cuomo — who as reported by The Post is being paid just $1 million a year by the fledgling network, a fraction of his compensation at CNN — fared poorly in the 25-54-year-old age demographic that is mostly coveted by advertisers — drawing just 8,000 viewers.

CNBC, Fox Business, HLN, and Newsmax all beat Cuomo in the 25-54 demographic, according to Nielsen.

Cuomo’s viewership in the 25-54 demographic was smaller than the 7 p.m. hour that preceded his show on NewsNation.

Update: Dems in Disarray as ‘Comeback’ Narrative Completely Falls Apart

As we noted earlier, despite various Democrat “comeback” narratives that the MSM and the Very Online Left have been trying to push for months, unless a miracle happens Democrats look set to lose their majority in the House and possibly even the Senate, with Joe Biden’s approval ratings still languishing in the low to mid-40s and Congressional generic balloting once again favoring the GOP.

One reason for all the talk of a “resurgence” in support for Democrats was the June decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Sometimes you see a polling result that jumps out from the page. That was the case when I saw a recently released Gallup poll on who Americans think can better handle the issue that is most important to them.

Put in a historical context, this poll potentially portends very good things for Republicans come November.

Gallup, unlike other pollsters, has another twist on that question. They follow it up by pressing respondents to answer which party they think can better handle the issue that they just named as the most important.

Gallup’s latest data shows that 48% of Americans believe the Republican Party is best equipped, while 37% believe it is the Democratic Party.

This 11-point Republican edge is one of the best they have ever had. Looking at 20 midterm elections since 1946 when this question was asked, only once has the Republican Party had a larger advantage on this question. That was in 1946 when Republicans had a 17 point lead on the Democrats.

In politics, under traditional circumstances, the charge that a candidate had once paid for a girlfriend’s abortion would be a killer — especially in the final month before an election.

But, so far at least, that is not the case with Herschel Walker and the spectacular accusation that the Republican nominee for U.S. Senator from Georgia paid for the abortion of a girlfriend in 2009.

In the 36 hours since the Daily Beast published the accusation, which Walker branded false, the onetime University of Georgia football great had what his campaign called a “record-breaking” fund-raising day: $182,000, $50,000 of which came in during Walker’s appearances on Sean Hannity’s TV program to answer the charges.

The case in question, Morin v. On Monday, the New York Times published a story about Konnech, a small election software company that has just 27 employees, 21 based in Michigan and six in Australia. The paper reported that Konnech has been the target of "election deniers" who have made it the focus of "a new conspiracy theory about the 2020 presidential election."

"Using threadbare evidence, or none at all," the New York Times's Stuart A. Thompson reported, the "election deniers" said Konnech "had secret ties to the Chinese Communist Party and had given the Chinese government backdoor access to personal data about two million poll workers in the United States."

In the last two years, the New York Times added, "conspiracy theorists have subjected election officials and private companies that play a major role in elections to a barrage of outlandish voter fraud claims." But now, "the attacks on Konnech demonstrate how far-right election deniers are also giving more attention to new and more secondary companies and groups."

Of course, Left Wing rags and Democrats pooh pooh the facts and try to cover it up and HunterLaptop everyone about it..

    Then...

Fast forward one day. Twenty-four hours. The New York Times published another story about Konnech, this one headlined, "Election Software Executive Arrested on Suspicion of Theft." Thompson reported that Yu had been "arrested by Los Angeles County officials in connection with an investigation into the possible theft of personal information about poll workers."

From the New York Times: "The company has been accused by groups challenging the validity of the 2020 presidential election with storing information about poll workers on servers in China. The company has repeatedly denied keeping data outside the United States, including in recent statements to The New York Times." And then: The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office "said its investigators had found data stored in China." And this is from the New York Times on the core of the matter:

Once again, the FACTS come out and prove that Hunter Biden's Laptop is a real thing...

The Left rarely is happy with anything that doesn't kowtow to their hysterical anti-America agenda..

As you, I couldn't be happier.. Another Israel on the planet??

    WOOT!! :D

of course that lawsuit failed. just because a law is dumb doesn't make it unconstitutional.

Did you read exactly what these Democrat morons filed???

"We're already being harmed by this law!!!"

"Well, if you are already being harmed then obviously it's not because of the law because the law hasn't been enforced yet!"

It's simply AMAZING that Democrats even know how to breathe.... :eyeroll:

of course that lawsuit failed. just because a law is dumb doesn't make it unconstitutional.

And just because some think the law is dumb doesn't make it factually accurate..

Considering what's going on in today's schools and the complete and utter MESS that Democrats have made of things (see Oregon)....

ANY law that protect kids from the complete and utter bullshit and personal destruction that Democrats bring to the table is logical and rational...

You yourself have commented on how kids at that age are prone to do stupid stuff.. That's why we don't let kids at that age choose to smoke or drink or drive.. Because they are too young to understand the consequences of their choices...

Yet Democrats want to push these young impressionable kids to irrevocably change their frakin' gender!!????

Where is the logic in that??

the law is dumb because it doesn't do what it claims. i can make a law that mandates apple pie and puppies for every household, and THAT will be more effective than this ridiculous governmental overreach into the classroom. unconstitutional? harming people's gender rights? hardly either. but is it going to actually accomplish anything that it claims? will a single pedophile actually be caught and prevented from harming children? probably not even once.

My timeline of a post-WWIII world is having Israel be a big leader in the world government that is formed..

Israel has the right match of recognizing individual rights while maintaining security for it's citizens...

No.. It doesn't do what Democrats claim it does.. There's a difference...

but is it going to actually accomplish anything that it claims?

    If it's implemented properly, yes..

will a single pedophile actually be caught and prevented from harming children? probably not even once.

Pedophiles aren't the only thing that can harm the children..

Being pushed in to having irrevocable gender bending surgery is at least as harmful..

THAT is what the law prevents.. And, for those kids who were pushed into gender-bending and now regret it??

    The 1000% support Florida's law...
