Things Are Looking Up For Democrats

[ Posted Monday, August 1st, 2022 – 16:09 UTC ]

The conventional political wisdom all year has been that the Republicans were going to have a big "red wave" midterm election, which would mean Democrats would lose lots of seats pretty much everywhere -- the House, the Senate, and governors' offices. This idea was formulated back when the voters were worried about different things than they are now, however, because life (and politics) is not static -- constant change is the only thing that stays the same. We are just under 100 days until this year's election, which means there is still time for the public's focal point to change even further, as unforeseen events pop up. But it's worth taking a look at how things have shifted over the past few months, because things are looking decidedly better for the Democrats.

There is no one reason for this shift; there are many. Some are specific to certain races or certain states, while others are more broad and nationwide. About the only thing that hasn't changed much is that the public is still worried about inflation -- perhaps even more so now, as gas prices spiked through the roof due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This is usually summed up as voter concerns about "the economy," but most of the economy is actually in pretty good shape -- unemployment remains low, wages are going up, the stock market is doing well (with the usual ups and downs, of course, but overall not bad). But the price of everything has been rising, hitting all American families in the pocketbook.

Inflation is still high, although it may be headed downward now that gas prices are falling fast. The price of a gallon of gas is the most visible of any commodity, and it is now down a full 80 cents from the peak it hit a few months back. If gas continues to fall, the average price per gallon could be below four dollars within a few weeks. This helps ease the pressure on consumers and ease people's political worries as well. Which will help President Joe Biden and the Democrats, in a generalized way.

The other thing that has changed dramatically since the "red wave" conventional wisdom appeared is that the public has largely moved on from fears of COVID-19. The pandemic has changed to an epidemic, vaccines are available to all ages, and the variants that have come to dominate are less deadly. Which has meant the disappearance of mask mandates in most places. COVID just isn't that big a deal any more, at least politically-speaking. Republican rage at mask mandates and their fear and demonizing of vaccines has all moved pretty far into the background, even though they had counted on it being a big issue in the midterms. FiveThirtyEight reports how far off the radar the issue now is for voters:

COVID-19 -- an issue that was something of a no-win for President Biden -- is on the backburner for most voters. In the aforementioned Suffolk/USA Today poll, so few voters mentioned COVID-19 as their most important issue that it wasn't broken out as one of the 25 issues respondents named.

That is a big change, and it robs the Republicans of an issue to fearmonger about out on the campaign trail.

While some issues have faded, others have arisen to take their place. The biggest of these is abortion, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. All of a sudden, all the Republican extremism on the subject went from being a theoretical thing to fear to being enshrined in state law. They are falling all over themselves to pass the strictest anti-abortion laws they can, in fact. But this abortion-free Utopia is not really all that Edenic (not that it ever was). These laws are already having real consequences, and they are not the rosy picture Republicans wanted people to believe would happen. Tragedies are happening, and more will continue to happen. Democrats have taken up the mantle of "freedom," since taking rights away from women is exactly the same thing as taking freedom away. Republicans are overreaching in a big way, and this could lead to a rather large backlash at the polls. Abortion is motiving millions to vote, which is definitely going to help Democrats in November.

From that Suffolk/USA Today poll referenced by FiveThirtyEight, respondents were asked what the most important issue for them will be in November. Only three answers scored above ten percent. "The economy" was number one, clocking in at 20 percent. But "Inflation/Cost of living" was counted as a separate item, only coming in third place with 10.7 percent. In second place was "Abortion," at 15.7 percent. According to this poll, abortion is now a bigger political issue to voters than inflation. That is a big deal. People are angry about the Supreme Court's decision and the overreach of the Republicans, and it is going to be perhaps the biggest motivator for voters in the midterms. Which (obviously) benefits Democrats.

Democrats are now on the offensive on an issue they've played defense on for decades. There is a lot of pro-choice energy out there, and so far Democrats are doing a good job of harnessing it. They proactively moved to protect gay marriage rights by codifying them into federal law, which split the Republican Party in the House rather dramatically (roughly one-fourth of them voted for gay marriage, which would have been absolutely unthinkable before the Roe decision happened). Abortion rights are popular, but gay marriage is even more popular, which means that even Republicans in red districts or states know that explaining a vote against gay marriage is going to be a lot harder to do in 2022 than it was in 2012 (or whenever). This means the issue has now gone full circle in American politics -- it was a brilliant wedge issue for Republicans to use against Democrats for at least two decades, but now it is a wedge issue for Democrats to effectively use against the GOP. Forcing a vote on the gay marriage bill right before the midterms will put every senator on the record. So we'll see how this split plays out, but the wedge issue has already produced this division among Republicans.

The brilliant January 6th hearings televised by the House Select Committee may not have changed many minds among hardcore Democrats or Republicans, but it is certainly influencing those in the middle. Donald Trump's obvious dereliction of duty (to say the least) is not playing well in Peoria, one might say. Independents are moving away from Trump and those defending him in a big way. Voters largely want to just move on from Trump, and exposing all his weaknesses in dramatic fashion has resonated in the political middle, especially as the Republican Party continues to back Trump's Big Lie about the 2020 election. If Trump does jump into the 2024 presidential race before the midterm elections (as he's been threatening to do), that's just going to focus the voters in the middle even more on how the Republican Party has become the Party of Trump, plain and simple. Which, of course, will help Democrats.

Democrats have been helping themselves, as well. Congress has actually gotten some important things done over the last six months, and while each of them hasn't been an enormous deal in the political news, the cumulative effect of: "We're getting things accomplished" is certainly better than the alternative. A gun safety bill was signed into law by President Biden -- the first such law in a generation to make it through Congress. It is modest, to be sure, but the fact that it got done at all is still a monumental achievement for Democrats. The semiconductor chip bill that Biden just signed won't directly affect many people by the midterms (it's more of a long-horizon project), but the fact that Congress acted to make America more competitive against China is a popular win for the Democrats (and for the Republicans who voted for it, to be fair).

The major new deal with Senator Joe Manchin could be huge for the Democrats as well -- if it all works out. Democrats were fairly despondent about the chances of anything from Biden's Build Back Better bill ever passing, not that long ago. It looked like Manchin just wasn't going to agree to any of it, period. Then one ray of sunshine appeared, and it looked like Manchin was on board with lowering prescription drug prices and extending the Obamacare insurance subsidies. But then the clouds truly parted and the rain of disappointment stopped, when Chuck Schumer announced he had secured a deal from Manchin not just on healthcare issues, but also on climate change and energy, and making corporations and some tax-dodgers finally pay their fair share. This means Democrats won't have just one or two healthcare issues to campaign on, but other big issues as well -- and climate change is an enormous issue with younger voters. The bill hasn't passed either house yet, so everyone is holding their collective breath, but if Democrats manage to put it on Biden's desk it will be a huge boost to their chances in November.

When Congress does return (before the election), the Senate will have both the gay marriage bill to vote on as well as a reform package for how presidential elections are officially held. Six months ago, the prospects of Democrats in Congress accomplishing much of anything were pretty dim, but now they are chalking up victory after victory in Congress, and the public has noticed.

But the biggest factor in helping Democratic chances in November might just be the candidates the Republican base voters have nominated. Several hand-picked Trump acolytes are struggling in a big way. Most notably, in some Senate races:

In Ohio, Rep. Tim Ryan (D) leads MAGA-compliant J.D. Vance by a margin of 5 to 12 points in every poll going back to July 3, according to FiveThirtyEight. In Pennsylvania, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D) is leading TV snake-oil salesman Mehmet Oz by more than eight points. And in Wisconsin, Mandela Barnes, the near-certain Democratic nominee, leads incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson (R) in the most recent poll from Marquette University Law School by a statistically insignificant two points.

FiveThirtyEight, in that previously-cited article, puts the chances of Democrats winning the Senate at 55 percent (and, after it was published, the chances have gone up again, to now stand at 57 percent). That's up from 47 percent at the end of June, and 40 percent at the start of June. You can see which way this trend is going, and picking extreme candidates for the nominations has been a large driver of it. The same thing may be happening in a number of races for governor. And the "generic congressional ballot" (where the pollsters just ask whether you'd vote for a Democrat or Republican for your House district) is pretty much tied right now, wiping out a lead Republicans have held for months. So the trend isn't restricted to just the Senate races.

As I said, there isn't one overarching reason why Democrats' chances have notably improved -- it's a lot of things at once. Extreme Republican candidates, legislative accomplishments by Democrats, fighting for freedom and for people's rights, and the ebbing importance of the COVID and gas prices are all contributing to the trend.

I have to end with a word of caution, however. We still have almost 100 days to go. Anything could happen (and usually does). Who knows if some gigantic political issue flares into being in an October surprise? Democrats' chances are certainly looking up right at the moment, but assuming that the next 100 days are going to just "stay pretty much the same" is a fool's game. But even with that large caveat, as we near the Silly Season in American politics where not much happens because Congress is on vacation (and campaigning), things are looking remarkably good for the Democratic Party.

A Republican writer for The Hill was quoted as saying (I haven't been able to find the actual source) that Republicans had better make clear that they aren't looking to roll back access to contraception or interracial or gay marriage, and they'd better be careful about rape and incest exceptions and avoid talking about prosecuting women who cross state lines for an abortion or about banning abortion medication. Notice what a frail defensive position that is with what a broad expanse of uncovered buttocks. Justice Thomas, of course, has said in plain English that he IS looking to roll back access to contraception and gay marriage, while various states are passing laws with no rape or incest exceptions and provisions to prosecute women who cross state lines or providers who furnish abortion medication. But let's keep it simple: Just keep asking Republicans how they feel about 10-year-old pregnant rape victims.

Oh please...I have held a petri dish that contained cardiac tissue in it and that when a positively charged ion solution was applied to it, had a "heartbeat". It was not a life as you seem to believe this somehow proves.

Plus, your Forced Birther laws have already caused a woman carrying a stillborn fetus to be forced to continue carrying it for 3 additional weeks instead of being able to remove the dead fetus from her body -- causing her suffering and excessive bleeding. "Pro-Life" my ASS!

Women are 17x more likely to die during child birth than during an abortion. So every birth puts the woman's life at greater risk.

"But what about the "unborn baby"?" You mean the fetus, because you gotta be born to be a baby, how "PRO - Life" are you once it is born? You are forcing it to be raised by a person who did not want it for any number of reasons. What are you doing to better those children's lives? Anything? NOPE! You don't offer them universal healthcare, because if they get sick that's not your concern. You don't make sure that they are raised in a home that can afford to feed them. When it comes to education, all you care about is that they learn that the cause of all of the horrible and terrible things that occurred to non-whites throughout history is still a mystery and that is was definitely not the fault of the whites that were in charge of everything at the time.

But then again, you elect highly educated white men who convince you that people who went to the schools they graduated from are the enemy. They convince you that education is bad and make it so that only rich whites like themselves can afford to go to those ivy league schools. And you just keep believing that they are on YOUR side. You are too dumb to realize that THEY are the ELITE that they tell you to fear!

And as for charging women who are addicted to drugs for using while pregnant -- no, they shouldn't be charged; addiction is a disease. Unless you are treating her disease, she is going to continue using drugs. That is not hard to comprehend.

You think that Donald Trump shouldn't have to answer for his past alleged sexual assaults. Hell, Trump admitted to sexually assaulting a woman and we all heard him say it -- and you still voted for him.

You heard Trump threaten to withhold military aid from the Ukrainian people unless their government claimed that it was investigating the Biden family -- even if it really wasn't -- and you still supported him and ignored his criminal acts.

You heard Trump tell Bob Woodward at the very beginning of the pandemic that he had lied about how dangerous and contagious the virus REALLY was; and you chose to ignore it as over a million Americans died as a result of his lies and refusal to act. He told you that the reason that more people were getting the disease and dying from it was because we were testing too many people for Covid!!! You can't know someone died from Covid if you don't test them for it -- and you agreed with him.

We could have prevented so many of the deaths from Covid had Trump just put the health and well being of the American people over his fear that Covid would hurt his chances for re-election. How many died because they believed the president when he said Covid was a hoax the Democrats created to hurt him? He's guilty of negligent homicide.

SO again, I ask you, who is really concerned with the privacy of alleged rapists and murderers?

And no one has denied that at 6 weeks, a heartbeat can be detected from the developing fetus. You seem to think that is magical for some reason and prove of it being alive. I pointed out that a heartbeat just means an electrical impulse is reaching cardiac muscles. The petri dish I was holding was NOT alive. So your example is flawed as a "proof of life". At 6 weeks, the fetus cannot survive outside of the mother's body... so the heartbeat does not prove it is a viable life.

Again, I point to my previous post where I point out Donald Trump lying about the seriousness and deadliness of Covid because he believed it would hurt his chances to be re-elected.

Another fact-less claim that Russ spews...

Trump literally thought he could wish it away and that *POOF!* we would all just ignore it's existence and impact on us like he was willing to do!

    And another..

Over 1 million Americans died because we did not take the steps necessary to control the outbreak. Idiots in this country still want to make this a political issue instead of treating it like a medical issue.

    And another..

Do you realize that EVERYTHING you just spewed in your last 3 comments was completely and utterly wrong without ANY factual basis..

Funny how that always is the case with you, Russ..

Is that a question? It's more like a statement with two question marks after it for no particular reason. Are you illiterate?

Does a rapist have a right to privacy??

Are you seriously this ignorant? You apparently need help with simple federal law that protects persons in the United States, and I would wager that fact surprises no one who regularly reads this column.

I direct you to the United States Constitution that contains something for everybody, and I further direct you to simple HIPAA laws. In addition, in many "Red States" of America, the Republican Party is busy racing to the bottom to give rapists additional rights to force their victims to give birth to their spawn.

Does a murderer have a right to privacy??

I direct you again to the United States Constitution and simple HIPAA laws, and I thank you for answering my question about your ignorance.

Does a cop who justifiably shoots a black person in the line of duty have a right to privacy??

    * Constitution
    * HIPAA

Apparently Democrats answer YES to the first two and NO to the third... :eyeroll:

Apparently, you're a woefully uninformed person who needs help with simple constitutional and federal laws that apply to everyone regardless of political party.

    Agreed...

The "extreme Republican candidates" they're boosting are primarily the same ones Trump is endorsing.

But it PERFECTLY illustrates the character and integrity (or in this case, lack thereof) of the Democrat Party as a whole..

San Francisco has seen a wave of crimes against Asian residents since the start of the pandemic
A 70-year-old San Francisco woman was brutally beaten by four attackers in broad daylight at her apartment complex.

"They used their fist to hit my head multiple times and then they pulled me down and kept kicking me," the elderly lady, who wanted to be identified as Mrs. Ren, told KGO through an interpreter.

Mrs. Ren had spent the last two years in her apartment over fears of COVID-19, opting to leave for the first time Sunday only to be met by a mob of attackers in the hallway of her apartment complex.

‘Sick’ journalist fantasizes about Alito’s death, composes ‘prewritten obituary’ for Supreme Court justice

The Vox senior editor's post is the latest harassment aimed at the conservatives on the Supreme Court

Vox senior editor Ian Millhiser recently bragged on Twitter that he had been daydreaming about the death of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, tweeting out a "prewritten obituary" for the judge.

Millhiser, a savage critic of the conservative majority on the Supreme Court who also published a book titled, "The Agenda: How a Republican Supreme Court is Reshaping America," composed his controversial tweet Tuesday morning.

The reporter shared an image of a fantasy obituary he had written, which stated, "Justice Samuel Alito, who died on XXXX, was not devoid of any positive traits. He was a skilled attorney and a highly effective advocate for conservative causes."

Millhiser’s fake obituary included mockery for Alito, implying that he was a judicial activist while on the court. "Had he spent his career as a litigator, he would almost certainly be remembered as one of the Republican Party’s leading Supreme Court practitioners," it continued.

Speaking of cop haters, they convicted another one of those Trump asslickers to multiple years in prison for assaulting police officers, unlawfully carrying a weapon, and having a stockpile of weapons nearby. Tough break for another cop assaulting Trump holster.

The Democrat Party is the Party that puts their own political agenda ahead of the safety and welfare of the children.. This is documented FACT...

Since you were so kind to explain your swinger past (archived herein) and it's also documented fact regarding your feelings about "the lifestyle" when your children aren't involved, it looks like the swinger doesn't fall far from the Trumpanzee. Heh.

Now we learn that the Democrat Party is the Party that supports extreme Republican candidates and helps them to be elected to office... This is documented FACT...

I too hope that the extreme Republican Trump asslickers that the Fat Bastard authoritarian and some of the Democrats are boosting go down in flames.

How the hell can ANYONE with a conscience and more than 2 brain cells to rub together support the Democrat Party??

Since you were so kind to post your wife's name multiple times on this forum and you claim to be an expert in law enforcement, it seems odd that you wouldn't actually realize that voter information is public record and anyone with a keyboard and Internet connection could easily determine that your wife is a registered Democrat and has been for a long time.
