A Good Night For Progressives

[ Posted Wednesday, May 18th, 2022 – 17:10 UTC ]

The progressive wing of the Democratic Party had a pretty good night in last night's primaries. It wasn't a complete sweep, but there was a lot more positive news than negative, for once. The big-money establishment Democrats were soundly defeated in a number of races, some of them in very blue House districts -- meaning the progressive is almost certain to win in November. Not every race is going to be a cakewalk, but at this point the Democrats' chances look pretty good.

The center-ring race was the Senate primary in Pennsylvania, where John Fetterman soundly defeated centrist Conor Lamb -- by over 30 points. Fetterman just suffered a minor stroke and had a pacemaker installed on the day of the election, but none of that stopped him from chalking up a very impressive victory last night. Fetterman doesn't like the label "progressive," he sees himself as more of a robust fighter for the little guy, but when you compare the two candidates, Fetterman was far more progressive than Lamb. One of Fetterman's signature issues was the legalization of marijuana, for instance. He also supports a $15 minimum wage and getting rid of the legislative filibuster in the Senate so Democrats can actually get some stuff done. Lamb, on the other hand, was backed by Senator Joe Manchin from next-door West Virginia -- which says just about all you need to know about Lamb, really.

As of this writing it is still not clear which Republican Fetterman will be taking on in November. The race for the Republican nomination was neck-and-neck all night, and as of now the race is separated by only 1,520 votes (out of over 1.3 million cast), so it will obviously be going to a recount. Right now, Mehmet "Dr." Oz is in the lead, barely edging out Dave McCormick. The Republican establishment would much rather see McCormick win, though, as he is seen as a lot more electable in November. Donald Trump endorsed Oz, so choice of the "Dear Leader" wing of the Republican Party was explicit here. However, many GOP voters -- many of them MAGA voters -- consider Oz to be "too Hollywood" for Pennsylvania. McCormick was helped by the third big candidate in the race, because she helped split the MAGA vote, but in the end Kathy Barnette fell far behind the other two frontrunners.

Fetterman says he's ready to take on either of the Republicans, but you'd have to assume he would much prefer to take on Oz. Fetterman is about as authentic as you can get, which would stand in sharp contrast to Oz. Pennsylvania is not New York state -- carpetbaggers are not looked upon as kindly there -- and Oz had to hastily move to the Keystone State from New Jersey when he decided to run. That could hurt him in a big way in November. As could all the MAGA political positions he has hastily adopted, after being much more mainstream throughout his television career. Oz has incredibly high negative ratings from within the ranks of his own party's voters in Pennsylvania, which means he wouldn't automatically be able to count on the base turning out to vote for him, while Fetterman has already won a statewide race, for lieutenant governor. McCormick is a lot more authentic, so he wouldn't be as vulnerable to such attacks. In any case, it is going to be one of November's most interesting Senate races, no matter which Republican wins the nomination in the end.

The votes are still being counted, but progressives look like they've chalked up two very big victories in House races in Oregon as well. In the fifth district, Jamie McLeod-Skinner is beating incumbent Representative Kurt Schrader by over 22 points, and in the sixth district Andrea Salinas is winning her race against Carrick Flynn by almost 19 points.

Schrader is a proud seven-term "Blue Dog" Democrat who has fought against Joe Biden's agenda in prominent ways, and has even been called "the Joe Manchin of the House" for bucking his party's line so much. He voted against Biden's initial COVID-19 relief bill, and was also against both Nancy Pelosi's plan to bring down the cost of prescription drugs and Biden's Build Back Better plan. McLeod-Skinner ran on the platform of being a loyal partner of Joe Biden more than leaning on progressivism, but she will be a lot less beholden to corporate interests like big Pharma. The race is still open (only about half of the votes have been counted, as of this writing), but Schrader has a long way to go to catch up. If Schrader loses, it will be a high-profile example of a corporate Democrat being successfully primaried by a much more progressive candidate. Even Biden's endorsement of Schrader didn't do him any good, in the end.

Carrick Flynn has conceded to Andrea Salinas (with 69 percent of the votes counted) in a very hard-fought race, if measured by the amount of money sunk into it by other groups. Flynn, a first-time candidate, was backed not only by a Nancy Pelosi-aligned PAC (the House Majority PAC) but also by a cryptocurrency billionaire. The PAC threw a million dollars behind Flynn, even though he was a White guy running against a Latina in a district that is over 20 percent Latino voters (which left a very bad taste in many Democrats' mouths). But that paled in comparison to the $11 million the crypto billionaire threw in to the contest on Flynn's account. In the end, all of this money was thrown away -- an absolutely stunning amount for one House primary race. But sometimes money doesn't automatically equate to victory, and now the very blue district will likely be represented by Salinas next year -- a clear-cut victory for progressives.

In Pennsylvania, one House district will almost certainly go through a recount, as the margin is razor-thin. As of this writing, with 94 percent of the vote counted, progressive Summer Lee is leading Steve Irwin by only 446 votes out of a total of over 110,000 cast. Lee is an unapologetic progressive who will doubtlessly be joining the Squad if she prevails, while Irwin was backed by establishment Democrats. The district is an open one, as the incumbent Democrat is retiring.

Progressives scored other victories last night as well, but as mentioned, it wasn't a total sweep. Progressive candidates lost in two House races in North Carolina, where Nida Allam and Erica Smith lost (respectively) to Valerie Foushee and Don Davis, who were both heavily backed by establishment Democratic PACs. In Kentucky, it was a similar story for Attica Scott, who was defeated by Morgan McGarvey.

All in all, though, there was a lot for progressives to celebrate in last night's primary results. For once, there were more victories than disappointments. Of course, this doesn't automatically equate to victory in November everywhere -- some of these nominees will face very tough races in the fall. But at this point it is looking like the progressives have a very solid chance of increasing their representation in both congressional caucuses -- possibly even successfully negating Joe Manchin's obstructionism (although there's always Kyrsten Sinema, so they'd really need two solid Senate victories to fully accomplish this). In multiple races, big money and the party's establishment support were beaten by the grassroots and impressive candidates. That is good news for the Democratic Party, from the progressive point of view.

    Note on Schrader:

The reason they are not calling this yet even with a 22 point lead is the Clackamas county clerk ordered ballots and did not check the printing. Many of the bar codes were blurred so they have to hand count and manually send to Salem. Since Oregon added a seat this round, all the districts have changed. Previously Schrader had most of Clackamas county but not as much of the counties and parts of counties that the vote has already been counted. They expect a higher percentage of Schrader votes in the ballots currently being counted. So, even with a 22 point lead it's too close to call.

Yes, I live in Clackamas county...

Once again.. Proof positive that Democrats are their own worst enemies..

Democrats look to THE HANDMAIDENS TALE as an example of Right Wing policies..

But THT is actually a LEFT WING dystopian tale where baby killings AKA abortions are the way of the world so as to insure that the handmaidens can continue to work to serve and service the men..

During her conversation with Scott, Yellen made the argument for abortion in candid and craven economic terms. She explained, “Roe v. Wade and access to reproductive health care, including abortion, helped lead to increased labor force participation. It enabled many women to finish school. That increased their earning potential. It allowed women to plan and balance their families and careers.”

This is a truly dystopian argument, rivaling that of Gilead, the land in which Margaret Atwood’s famous novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, is set. Women have to abort their children because they will be more able to participate in the economy if unencumbered by childcare responsibilities.

Apparently, Democrats believe that women can ONLY be successful and happy if they are allowed to kill their babies so they can have a career and lots of money.. :eyeroll:

If only ya'all had voted for President Trump..

Gas would still be under 2 bucks a gal...

There should be 2 prices at the pumps..

Those who voted for Biden should pay $6.50 a gallon..

Those who voted for President Trump should pay $1.84 a gallon..

If the only reason you're being so obtuse on abortion is that someone somewhere is celebrating it, you can rest easy, b/c there are way fewer of those than .0008% who actually love and celebrate abortions. Ending a pregnancy is a sad decision to make, and there's no good served by calling every woman who makes that choice a murderer.

And yet #CELEBRATE your baby killing and #SHOUT OUT your infanticide were actually TRENDING topics on Twitter...

Such trending doesn't happen with .0008% of people in the country..

Which Democrats should have thought of before they started CELEBRATING and SHOUTING OUT... Eh??

The mere fact that Democrats are pushing for unlimited and unrestricted baby killing in the WHPA is sufficient proof that Democrats love and celebrate their baby killing..

And if you were the quintessential Democrat then there wouldn't be any problem because SAFE, LEGAL, RARE would still be the Democrat policy..

    Personally?? No..

But MANY interviews have been posted of women saying nearly exactly that..

Irregardless of these facts, it's apparent that Democrats are a LOT more into baby killing than SAFE, LEGAL RARE that was the norm..

As evidenced by the unrestricted baby killing on demand up to birth that is codified in the WHPA..

    This is undeniable.

Considering you don't know that the WHPA allows late-term abortions, it's obvious you didn't read the law in it's entirety..

Dude, I posted the relative sections two threads ago. Did you read the bill? It was linked to in your foxnews article...

You and your foxnews handlers are trying to push the narrative that a pregnant woman with a huge belly and about to pop could walk in to an abortion clinic and come out thin without a baby. Abortion just does not work that way no matter how much you fantasize about it. First, as a procedure, abortion just does not work that late into pregnancy. The vast majority of states limit late term abortion to 24 weeks or less unless the health of the mother is in jeopardy. Even if they have a reason for late term abortion, the procedure is different, more expensive and more invasive than a normal abortion and very few clinics are set up to handle it. It's a more specialized procedure and generally requires a doctors involvement.

I would say the big question is why you follow news services that so blatantly misinform with a false political narrative?

Did we ever cover infanticide? Abortion removes fetuses, it does not kill babies...

Dems in Disarray: Internal Polling Looks Devastating

Political junkies' attention has been focused on the latest batch of primary election results this week, but just beneath the surface, huge and damaging fissures appear to be opening up among embattled House Democrats. For months, the conventional wisdom has held that 2022 is going to be a bad cycle for the ruling party and that Republicans were virtually guaranteed to win a majority in at least the lower chamber of Congress in November. The big question has been, how bad will it get for the Dems? It seems as though quite a few Democrats are waking up to the reality that the likeliest answer at this stage is, very bad. The "precriminations" are spilling out into the open. The entity in charge of protecting the House majority is the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or DCCC. Its chairman is having a very bad week.

poll (5/6-8) shows 57.6% of Americans believe abortion should either be illegal entirely or after a fetal heartbeat detected.

Only 11.6% believe abortion should be legal at any point.
