Closing Time Schedule

[ Posted Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020 – 15:44 UTC ]

I'm not even going to try to write an article today, because nobody would likely even read it. We're all just waiting for the results to start appearing anyway, so I thought I'd file this as a placeholder column so we can all start fresh down in the comments section tonight.

I got the following list of poll closure times from the Washington Post, which has a much more detailed list, but I just wanted to post the main information as a summary. Caveats: Other sources I checked differed on whether a few states would report some results an hour earlier (such as Oregon), and already there are a handful of counties here and there which have been granted extended polling hours. But other than that, this list should do. And, just to show everyone how much more pleasant it is to watch the results out here, all times are given in Pacific Standard Time (which is when I'll be seeing them).

Without further ado, here is the basic list of the schedule of state poll closing times. "Partial Results" means there are some counties which close early, and some which close late. Most often (but not in all cases), this is due to a time zone line splitting the state. "Completed Results" is the follow-up to Partial Results. And "Full Results" means that polls across the entire state close at the same time.

OK, has everyone laid in the proper election-watching supplies? I leave that one up to the individual, in terms of what it covers. So let's all sit back and watch the returns roll in, shall we?

Here's why not to panic. The media talking heads are mostly completely falling down on the job of explaining which votes have been counted and which have not. The difference between mail-in and same-day votes may be huge in some states. Some states counted mail-in first, others count them last. Several counties in PA won't even start counting them until tomorrow. But the journalists aren't really stressing this at all -- which is a shame, because it is different for every state. Check the commentary on FiveThirtyEight, as one source that is discussing this in depth. Some of these states may be lost causes (FL, for instance). But many of the others are not, for various reasons.

And all Biden needs is to hold WI and MI and pick up ONE of the following: PA, OH, NC, GA, Fl, TX, AZ.

So as the Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy would say:

    Don't panic!

    I have to disagree...

I hate to make it all about D v R, but it IS politics after all..

Democrats need to learn to accept the will of the people..

If they can't push their radical agenda at the ballot box, they should quit trying to achieve it thru other means...

Democrats are VERY short-sighted and only look at short-term gain. They ignore long-term consequences..

Reid nuking the filibuster is a perfect example..

The Democrats obsession with court packing is another...

If Dems can't achieve their agenda thru the ballot box, then they should accept the FACT that, Americans don't WANT that agenda...

    Elections DO have consequences...

I think Democrats need to get a lot better at pushing what their agenda actually is in an effort to counter the nonsense that their agenda is anti-America. But, they must do so in a way that doesn't give short shrift to the 60+ million voters who don't vote for Democrats and understand what these voters keep saying in presidential and down ballot elections.

The fly in the ointment is that the fine art of persuasion may be dead in America. I hope that is not the case! Biden used to know how to persuade but I'd have to give him only a barely passing grade for his efforts this time around. But, with a little luck and on a wing and a prayer, he might just win this election. If he doesn't, then all hope is lost for moving the country forward, together.

And, the ability to do this is what forms the gulf between the leadership capacities of Trump and Biden.

Interesting factoid... Even if you accept the bogus 220k+ death count (which only 6% of that is actual covid deaths) the blue states, death rates per 100,000 residents are 40 percent higher than in red states, according to an AEI study. Of the first 210,000 deaths in the US from COVID-19, only 33,000 took place in red states.

Building the strongest U.S. economy in my lifetime through historic business and personal tax cuts, resulting in millions of jobs created and record-low unemployment

Cutting federal government regulations that had a stranglehold on American business innovators and entrepreneurs

Confronting China’s trade abuses and negotiating fair trade deals with Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and Japan

    Eliminating the Obamacare individual mandate

Rebuilding our military through investments in our defense capabilities as well as securing the largest military pay raise in a decade

Nominating and confirming more solid conservative circuit court judges than any other first-term administration

Nominating and fighting for the confirmation of three originalists, Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, to the Supreme Court and then nominating Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacancy left by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

My argument is that Trump has done very little to control a very controllable virus and you say that this assertion assumes facts not in evidence.

Let's take the example of the thing that Trump loves to tout - his China travel ban. This is a classic example of the unintended negative consequences completely overshadowing what was intended, for two reasons.

Firstly, Trump's China travel ban was porous as hell. And, there was no strategy or implementation of a testing and quarantine regiment for the people who were getting into the US from China. This rates at least a 10 on the incompetence scale.

Secondly and, perhaps, more importantly, the travel restrictions imposed by the Trump administration on China and Europe gave the president and, therefore, many in the country a completely false sense of security and the misguided idea that nothing else needed to be done.

But, maybe the most persuasive piece of evidence is a missing national strategy for implementing a comprehensive package of public health measures along with the kind of leadership from the top down that would encourage compliance at the community level and empower individuals with the knowledge and support required to protect themselves and others.

According to the WHO, covid is less virulent and less lethal than the seasonal flu..

The survival rate for covid is 98.6%.....

At the session, Dr Michael Ryan, the WHO’s Head of Emergencies revealed that they believe roughly 10% of the world has been infected with Sars-Cov-2.

This is their “best estimate”, and a huge increase over the number of officially recognised cases (around 35 million).

Dr. Margaret Harris, a WHO spokeswoman, later confirmed the figure, stating it was based on the average results of all the broad seroprevalence studies done around the world.

As much as the WHO were attempting to spin this as a bad thing – Dr Ryan even said it means “the vast majority of the world remains at risk.” – it’s actually good news. And confirms, once more, that the virus is nothing like as deadly as everyone predicted.

The global population is roughly 7.8 billion people, if 10% have been infected that is 780 million cases. The global death toll currently attributed to Sars-Cov-2 infections is 1,061,539.

That’s an infection fatality rate of roughly or 0.14%.

Right in line with seasonal flu and the predictions of many experts from all around the world.

0.14% is over 24 times LOWER than the WHO’s “provisional figure” of 3.4% back in March. This figure was used in the models which were used to justify lockdowns and other draconian policies.

In fact, given the over-reporting of alleged Covid deaths, the IFR is likely even lower than 0.14%, and could show Covid to be much less dangerous than flu.

The mere fact that Left Wing water-carriers has to inflate the death count with non-covid deaths supports the fact that this is one big pile of BS...

Democratic voters in the primaries didn't just settle for Biden. Collectively, they made an inspired choice, even if many of them don't realize it, even now. :)

Not sure how seriously I'd take it, but CNN is still pushing that Biedn has a chance in Pennsylvania as he's closing the gap pretty quickly with the mail-in ballots being counted now. According to them, 1.1M ballots remain, and Biden would catch up were he to win around 70% of them, a number that's apparently pretty consistent with the performance he's been having with mail-in ballots in the state.

Now, I'll believe it when I see it, but it's interesting to contemplate.

No, 600k ballots were NOT "found" after the call; they weren't hiding in a corner or suddenly discovered in the broom closet. Fox knew the count of ballots in Arizona was only at 73% when they made that call last night.

    Good. :)

The thing about "second place" is that it actually did used to be a "thing" in America where the guy who came in second place became the Vice President. Thomas Jefferson wasn't thrilled about having Aaron Burr as his Vice President and set reforms in motion during his presidency to remedy that whole "second place" scenario. :)
