President Laughingstock

[ Posted Tuesday, September 25th, 2018 – 16:28 UTC ]

President Donald Trump just achieved a rather dubious distinction -- one he has often falsely levelled at previous presidents, in fact. Because President Trump has now officially and quite literally become the laughingstock of the world.

Trump began a speech this morning to the United Nations General Assembly with one of his trademark bits of boasting. At the very beginning of his speech, Trump tried out a bit of bragging that always goes over well at his political rallies: "In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country... so true." Since this was not actually a Trump rally, the world's leaders reacted to the line as pretty much anyone with even the flimsiest grasp on American history would -- they laughed out loud at Trump's ridiculous and self-serving falsehood.

Trump was visibly taken aback. "Didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK." This brought an even larger round of laughter from the entire rest of the world.

This is the first time in my experience -- and maybe ever -- that such a thing has happened at the United Nations General Assembly. Now, other American presidents may have cracked a joke or two to warm the crowd up, but laughing with an American president is not at all the same thing as laughing at an American president. While the former may have occurred previously, the latter definitely has not. All U.S. presidents, whether the rest of the world agreed with their agenda or not, were treated in a sober and dignified manner because what they said carried great weight and demanded respect from other countries' leaders. Nobody laughed at Barack Obama, George Bush (either one), Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, or any of the rest of them. This is likely because none of them treated the U.N. as just another domestic political audience to be lied to in furtherance of a president's monumental insecurity and ego. But Trump being Trump, he saw the occasion as just another opportunity to remind everyone of his own greatness. With demonstrably false boasting.

And the world laughed.

Later on in Trump's speech, he issued a warning based on his own faulty understanding of reality, when he stated that Germany risked a Russian takeover due to a new natural gas line. Trump has been beating this drum for a while, even though his claims are wildly off the mark in terms of how much energy Germany actually imports from Russia. The most laughable reaction to Trump's misunderstanding of the issue came from Angela Merkel, who retorted that she had grown up under Soviet dominance (in East Germany), and needed no schooling about what it was or what it would mean.

This time, the television cameras caught the German delegation visibly amused and smirking when Trump got his facts wrong, once again.

Just a few months ago, during a cabinet meeting, Trump stated that the rest of the world was laughing at the U.S. This is a common refrain for Trump, because it is an accusation he's been using since roughly the 1980s -- that the rest of the world was laughing at us because of the ineptitude of the current president. It's never been true previously, but now Trump has managed to make his unsubstantiated claims about others into reality. The rest of the world just laughed at Donald Trump.

He is now, in a word, the world's laughingstock.

In related news, Saturday Night Live begins its new season this weekend. Can't wait to see how they handle President Laughingstock, personally.

[Program Note: I am still in the midst of connectivity problems, but hopefully these should be worked out by tomorrow. The site itself should be up and running now, after having problems yesterday. My own connection problems should be addressed tomorrow morning. This is why today's column had to be so brief, and its why I haven't been tweeting, but hopefully by this time tomorrow everything will be back to normal. My apologies for the inconvenience, and thanks to all for your patience.]

None of it washes on the world stage, what's Trump going to do? sanction and tariff us all into submission...lol. Not likely. He can threaten us all with the "soon to be powerful" American military...lol, ok hold on, 'soon to be'?

We nation states of the world have decided how to deal with Trump... wait until he's gone in 2020, then America will be rid of its clown and then it's back to business.

Trump makes some good points tho, he just bullies the wrong people. China won't back off, they will see their people back to the stone age before they give in, Europe doesn't care, the middle east agrees on one thing... Trump must die and Canada will wait until Trump can't mess with NAFTA without congress' say so...

It was GREAT to see the emperor start to realize that maybe he isn’t wearing such wonderful garments after all! Remember, Trump is narcissistic genius that believed the CIA staff gave him the longest standing ovation ever when it was his job to tell them to be seated and he failed to do it!

CNN Contributor Caught Fabricating Additional Kavanaugh Accusation

Notorious Playboy White House correspondent and CNN contributor Brian Karem reported Monday that police in Montgomery County, Maryland were investigating another assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, but county officials swiftly denied the claim, further proving that liberals are fabricating assault allegations in an effort to derail Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Karem made the outrageous claim in The Sentinel Newspapers, which operates local newspaper The Montgomery County Sentinel. “Investigators in Montgomery County confirmed Monday they’re aware of a potential second sexual assault complaint in the county against former Georgetown Prep student and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh,” Karem wrote. “While investigators weren’t specific and spoke on background, they said they are looking at allegations against Kavanaugh during his senior year in high school after an anonymous witness came forward this weekend.”

However, in the wake of the report’s publication, legitimate journalists investigated Karem’s lead – and found that it was a complete and total fabrication. The Montgomery County Police Department subsequently issued a statement Monday afternoon that they were never contacted “by any alleged victim nor a victim’s attorney to initiate a police report or a criminal investigation regarding Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.”

U.N. Speech: Can New 'Trump Doctrine' Remake The World?

U.N.: President Trump no doubt didn't get the reaction he would have liked from the United Nations to his speech. The assembled diverse-ocrats seemed to largely ignore the substance of his speech. Too bad. The outlines of his new Trump Doctrine that he unveiled at U.N. headquarters will have a major global impact.

Gone are the days of President Obama's kowtowing to foreign despots and pretending that all nations are the same. They aren't. And Trump, while willing to live and let live, is the first president since Ronald Reagan to tell the U.N. that our country will no longer tolerate the tyrants and dictators whose nations make up much of the U.N.'s general Assembly.

Trump has been tough on the U.N., so it's not surprising that his speech wasn't exactly greeted with politeness. When he began his speech boasting of his administration many undoubted accomplishments, the assembled "diplomats" laughed.

Spot on - the U.N. embarrassment was a "5 screen page" humiliation for Michale. One of his larger shows of angst.

It reminds me of the famous "Dorothy Martin" cult that became a classic example of the nature of belief. Great story if you don't already know it. Michale is suffering from all the symptoms the cultists did when they couldn't handle the fact they had been conned.

Now, it's possible that he'll hold it until after the vote out of Judiciary on Friday. Now they've set the hearing up as a sham, there's no reason to detract from that. That timing would also inflict maximum damage on the Republicans IF he has something highly credible on it's face. Kav would have then been voted out, and so he'd go down in a full Senate vote. Mitch promised there will be an on the record vote, "up or down."

I can remember some robust and cogent debates we have had early on where intelligent points were made on both sides and, sometimes, minds changed, middle ground was found, and we both learned something.

Senate confirmation of K. is not going to end press interest in his past, and the shoes are dropping pretty fast and furious. K. himself says way too much in press interviews (so much for his stint at Yale Law) and is already being called out for inconsistencies, vagueries and what may turn out to be strains on his credibility (drinking and virginity) which ultimate leave a trail of outright lies.

So, assume K. gets confirmed. The press keeps digging. More and more witnesses come forward. They get lawyers who fight with both press and the legal system. Supreme Court Justices serve for good behavior. They can be impeached, and I suspect they can be called prosecuted for illegalities not covered by statutes of limitation. Suddenly, the odds of K. serving 40 years don't seem so good.

Kavanugh is like a hot spot in a coal bunker. He could smolder for months or even in years until he suddenly ignites and torches all supporters in close proximity. That's a big downside. Better to make the confirmation process a valiant lost cause which can be waved in the face of Red voters for decades to come.

It's a theory, but I won't be surprised if the confirmation process isn't further delayed by the Leadership and ultimately terminated after the majority gets it cover narrative in place.

If you want to correct information someone else posts about you, you are required to pay the "mylife people" in order to fix the incorrect information they posted about you.

As I said yesterday in previous thread, the thing about this scandal is that it involves a wide group of people. Kavanaugh's claims to alterboy-hood status throughout HS and College years invite debunking not by one or two but by many people. And the debunkings are happening.

At minimum Kavanaugh's claims to never drinking appear laughably incredible. He's been described as a mean drunk by multiple people. That's the minimum lie he's told. Debunk that and the claims of other bad behaviors become much shakier.

We have two giant problems for Kavanaugh: what he's lying about, and the fact that he's lying at all. He's lying NOW about stuff he did then. He's lying NOW.

One night she ran across an apparently inebriated Brett Kavanaugh and things went differently then. Previously, he had always been nice to her. “ But not that night. He was drunk. He was obnoxious and crude. I had a friend with me and we left. His football buddies were laughing at us. Maybe they were laughing at him, but I didn’t take it that way and they didn’t do anything to keep him from being a jerk.”

From that point on Elizabeth said she steered clear of Kavanaugh and didn’t see any more sexually explicit behavior because, “I didn’t want to be around those guys.” She was not present at the party described by Ford – or doesn’t believe she was. She also said she never saw Kavanaugh assault anyone.

But, from her experience, she said she has no problem believing Dr. Ford’s allegations and said Ford should be heard without politics being involved. “I don’t think that’s possible today. I’m afraid for my daughter. How do we make this less politicized? People are criticizing her for coming forward, but she moved to California. He wasn’t in her life. Now he’s everywhere and could be part of the Supreme Court. It was just high school, but that kind of trauma lasts and no one should be judged for coming forward as she did. It took great courage. Maybe he genuinely doesn’t remember what happened because he blacked out. He deserves to be heard too. He shouldn’t be convicted without being heard either.”

Elizabeth says she knows all too well about the resulting trauma inflicted by a sexually aggressive boy. It happened to her the following year with a boy from a Catholic high school. “They’re all the same. Privileged, spoiled, powerful and unaccountable. They can get away with anything.”

Headline: Kavanaugh’s ‘choir boy’ image on Fox interview rankles former Yale classmates

Liz Swisher, who described herself as a friend of Kavanaugh in college, said she was shocked that — in an interview focused largely on his high school years and allegations of sexual misconduct — he strongly denied drinking to the point of blacking out.

“Brett was a sloppy drunk, and I know because I drank with him. I watched him drink more than a lot of people. He’d end up slurring his words, stumbling,” said Swisher, a Democrat and chief of the gynecologic oncology division at the University of Washington School of Medicine. “There’s no medical way I can say that he was blacked out. .?.?. But it’s not credible for him to say that he has had no memory lapses in the nights that he drank to excess.”

Lynne Brookes, who like Swisher was a college roommate of one of the two women now accusing Kavanaugh of misconduct, said the nominee’s comments on Fox did not match the classmate she remembered.

“He’s trying to paint himself as some kind of choir boy,” said Brookes, a Republican and former pharmaceutical executive who recalled an encounter with a drunken Kavanaugh at a fraternity event. “You can’t lie your way onto the Supreme Court, and with that statement out, he’s gone too far. It’s about the integrity of that institution.”

    Lotsa layers of protection, there.

Once he got into college, he joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, the "DKEs", a frat known for hard partying and misogyny. During Judge Kavanaugh’s time there some of his fraternity brothers paraded around campus displaying women’s underwear they had filched, drawing some public criticism, but no sanction. Privilege has its privileges.

It turns out that it was Debbie Ramirez's classmates, not Ramirez herself, who brought the Yale incident to the press. She'd long ago sublimated the assault as another frat boy prank - her fault, she thought, for hanging out with an unsavory crowd.

This comes well after what we learned before the sexual misconduct allegations even emerged. We learned during the hearings proper that Kavanaugh had repeatedly lied, repeatedly perjured himself, about his connection to the Manny Miranda email hacking scandal during the Bush years. It doesn’t seem like he was a culprit. It’s even possible, though I think unlikely, that he didn’t know at the time that he was receiving information from stolen emails. But after it did become clear he lied about it repeatedly. None of these lies in themselves are as serious as the allegations against him, certainly with the new allegations today. But these lies are in the present. They are in many cases clearly refuted by evidence we can see with our own eyes – today evidence, not accounts from decades earlier. This suggests a casual willingness to lie which is utterly incompatible with sitting on the Supreme Court. It also makes his denials of the much more serious charges basically meaningless.

It's always safe to bet on the short attention span of average Americans, but voters, particularly female voters, tend to remember these things later. Clarence Thomas won the day, but female voters punished the Republicans in the next election, turning it into the 'Year of the Woman'. This year, you have an unprecedented number of women running for office, a shift among white suburban women toward Democrats, and a long-standing antipathy among women toward Trump generally to contend with.

Whether Kavanaugh is confirmed or not, the Republicans have stepped directly into this year's most unwelcome political trap: if women believe her testimony (and many will), Republican (or Democratic) Senators that don't, and vote to confirm him, will be wrong in their eyes, just weeks before the midterms. On a non-Kavanaugh topic, people talk about the great economy but that's very much a matter of which numbers you're referencing and to whom they apply. For most people the economy ain't great and hasn't been for years.

Sometimes you’ll hear people suggest that, sure, wage growth has been slow, but that’s because employers are pouring a lot more money into health care premiums. And generally speaking, that’s true: health care costs have gone up a lot.

But as this chart shows, for the median worker the total cost of compensation has gone up only 2.6 percent over the past decade. That includes everything that employers have to pay for. In other words, the idea that wage growth is slow because the money is going somewhere else simply doesn’t hold water—and that’s true for workers at all income levels. Even the highest-paid workers, who have seen the best wage growth and who get the best benefits, have seen their total compensation go up by less than 1 percent per year.

Another new allegation of misconduct against Kavanaugh from 1998. There are four witnesses. It has been discussed in recent days, but they decided to remain anonymous so far due to the treatment of the other victims they've seen.

A drunk Brett Kavanaugh slammed a woman into a wall in a sexual manner outside a DC bar.

“When they left the bar (under the influence of alcohol) they were all shocked when Brett Kavanaugh, shoved her friend up against the wall very aggressively and sexually.”

“There were at least four witnesses including my daughter.” The writer of the letter provided no names but said the alleged victim was still traumatized and had decided to remain anonymous herself.

She wants to remain anonymous so this one may go no further. I think we have enough on-the-record allegations to work with. This one is notable for being more recent, however.

Oh, wait. First this: This vast left-wing conspiracy theory and/or "smear campaign" conspiracy theory is falling apart fast. The guy is just a lousy drunk. There are too many witnesses. His college roommate Roche said he was a belligerent drunk. Judge's book lines up with this and what he told his girlfriend Elizabeth Rasor about gang raping a girl.

Avenatti is talking about filing criminal charges since Maryland has no statute of limitations on this. Kavanaugh and Judge have to lie about it and parse their words because they're subject to criminal charges for this ad infinitum.

    Indeed.

As most of the comments on this thread and most others clearly show, we seem to get too focused on the trees (and branches and leaves and …) and, as a result, we can't see the all important forest.

The last-minute ambush validates key assumptions of Trump’s supporters that fueled his rise and buttress him in office, no matter how rocky the ride has been or will become. At least three key premises have been underlined by tawdry events of the last couple of weeks.

First, that good character is no defense. If you are John McCain, who genuinely tried to do the right thing and carefully cultivated a relationship with the media over decades, they will still call you a racist when you run against Barack Obama.

If you are Mitt Romney, an exceptionally earnest and decent man, they will make you into a heartless and despicable vulture capitalist, also for the offense of campaigning against Obama.

If you are Brett Kavanaugh, a respected member of the legal establishment who doesn’t have a flyspeck on his record across decades of public service in Washington, they will come up with dubious accusations of wrongdoing from decades ago when you were a teenager.

Why it was up to Trump to call bull on Kavanaugh allegations

With apologies to Rudyard Kipling, “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs . . .” you are Donald Trump. At least that was the case Tuesday.

With Democrats going mad, Republicans going wobbly and the media mob acting like a lynching party, it was left to the president to call bulls–t on the Brett Kavanaugh allegations — and remind the nation of the enormous stakes involved.

On a normal day, in a saner world, Trump’s tough-love speech at the United Nations would deserve our full attention. It was a comprehensive outline of his America First doctrine, but the elephant in the room is that America cannot lead the world when it is unraveling at home.

And so the president stepped away from the General Assembly and onto the bully pulpit to forcefully denounce the partisan attacks on his Supreme Court nominee as a “con game.” He accused Dems and, by extension, the media of playing “a very dangerous game” by instantly embracing every charge as gospel.

Judge Kavanaugh and the weaponization of #MeToo

For far too long, women who brought forward allegations of sexual assault feared retribution and were not heard. But since the #MeToo movement started less than a year ago, we have seen an overcorrection in society that is dangerous and inarguably anti-men. And now Democrats are weaponizing that environment and the movement to railroad the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh in the name of politics.

In the era of #MeToo, we have been coerced as a society to believe a woman’s allegations on the basis of her gender alone. The political party that invented the term “Borking” is using uncorroborated and unverified sexual misconduct charges made by Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez as a battering ram against Kavanaugh.

The idea of ruining a potentially innocent man’s life seems to be OK with some supporters of the #MeToo movement. Teen Vogue columnist Emily Lindin wrote, “If some innocent men's reputations have to take a hit in the process of undoing the patriarchy, that is a price I am absolutely willing to pay.” Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) said Kavanaugh doesn’t deserve a presumption of innocence because of his judicial philosophy. She has also quipped that men should just “shut up and step up.”

In fact, congressional sources say her own yearbooks, among other things, present a potential issue for her and her character, and Republicans are prepared to cite them in questioning her story through the female sex-crimes expert they’ve hired.

A committee staffer told RealClearInvestigations, “We have her yearbooks,” which had been mysteriously scrubbed from the Web prior to Ford coming out with her allegations. “She will not make a good witness."

The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, noted that the annual class books feature a photo of an underage Ford attending at least one party, alongside a caption boasting of girls passing out from binge drinking. Her yearbooks also openly reference sexually promiscuous behavior by the girls, including targeting boys at Kavanaugh’s alma mater, Georgetown Prep, an all-boys school in the affluent Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. Ford attended neighboring Holton-Arms School, an all-girls academy.

While there was drinking at these frat parties, I never seen anything like she describes even at frat parties. There is no way dozens of HS girls were being gang raped in a house full of people. This has now reached Salem proportions literally.

    That's a very good point..

This is classic Salem Witch Trials.....

An actual reason to ask her this question is the fact that she is a professor of psychology. From what I've caught in snippets, Ford did as well as she could in that environment. However, the fact still remains, without Judge being called to the same setting to be questioned, it's still a she said/he said scenario. Given that 'he' and his proponents won't entertain Judges appearance before the committee, we have to assume his testimony does them no service.

Therefore, I'm inclined to believe Ford at face value. If the alleged victim is advocating for this witness to be heard, even though she knows his testimony might be contrary to her own, surely the GOP have nothing to fear from Judge. Logically, it would be the other way around were Judge a solid witness, if someone can explain to me why this guy isn't to be heard...(other than the usual, he's got nothing to say beyond his 'so-called' statement.) it would certainly break the tie that now exists. Kavanaugh's following testimony is meaningless at this point, he can say he wasn't there and do this thing until the cows come home, but without Judge in front of the committee answering questions it still remains she said/he said... Only she gets the benefit of the doubt for asking for the witness that may or may not corroborate her claim.

Kavanaugh would be wise to ask for Judge to be sworn in and be heard, in fact it's about the only thing he can do to swing this back to his favour.

Kavanaugh could have owned up to the fact that he drank to excess when he was growing up. He could have admitted that there were many nights that he got so drunk that he had no memory of what occurred. He could have said that while he has no recollection of committing the horrible acts he is accused of committing while he was drunk, he cannot say that he knows the accusations are untrue. He could say that just the thought that he could do something that heinous while drunk makes him sick. He could apologize to Dr. Ford and beg her forgiveness for how he harmed her. He could say that while he has no memory of the night or what occurred, he wants her to know that he is not the same person who did that horrible act and applaud her courage for coming forward with this information. He could apologize for all of the additional pain that coming forward has caused her. He could tell her that he knows that this experience will give him new insights into cases of sexual assaults that come before him in his role as a judge.

He could have done these things and I would not have had a problem with him being confirmed.

But he did NONE of these things. Not only should he not be confirmed, but he should be removed from the bench immediately.

This is a disaster for Republicans. What were they thinking? What is the win? Are they this scared that they won't be able to ram though somebody else before January even if the do lose the Senate in the midterms?

Given the choice of Kavanaugh or some creepy clone like Gorsach (who isn't a sexual predator), it is better for Democrats that the Republicans force though Kavanaugh tomorrow.

Every single vote where he and Thomas vote against women's interests will open up these wounds and motivate the left against Republicans.

I always thought that Republicans' worst nightmare was actually overturning Roe vs. Wade, but doing it with the help of Kavanaugh is going to be far worse.

They will lose their most potent weapon in the culture wars and be tied to an attempted rapist at the same time. Women don't tell these stories to other people lightly, but both my wife and my sister tells me that they just bout every women they know has had a similar experience, and keep it hidden and they still hurt.

WTF are Republicans thinking - they should have thrown this clown under the car last week.

No way on earth this guy is going to reason supreme court cases based on constitutional consideration. None. The founders never imagined such a right-wing adherent, or left-wing for that matter.

A supreme court Judge has to enter into his or her role as impartial, Kavanaugh has yelled at committee that he blames the left-wing for all his troubles...

Politicians don't need to ensconce their ethics in the pocket of the leadership to display fealty, in fact, individual constituencies prefer their representatives to echo their sentiments...
