Take Me Out To The Ballgame

[ Posted Tuesday, July 15th, 2014 – 15:56 UTC ]

I'm playing hooky today.

This is actually the first year in a long while that I won't be traveling and hobnobbing this week, as for various reasons I decided not to attend the Netroots Nation confab this time around (I personally think next year will be the one to attend, since likely Democratic candidates may be vying for attention from the liberal crowds).

What I will be doing today is watching baseball's All-Star Game. It's the middle of the summer, it's a lazy hazy day here, and I'm going to kick back and watch baseball rather than deal with the ins and outs of politics. So I'll see you back here tomorrow, and in the meanwhile you can join in with me in a rousing chorus of:

Take me out to the ball game
Take me out to the crowd
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks
I don't care if I never get back
'Cause it's root, root, root for the home team
If they don't win, it's a shame
And it's one, two, three strikes, you're out
At the old ball game!

    Chris,

Good decision, to focus on baseball ... everything else is just depressing.

It's been a great game so far, especially Derek Jeter's farewell.

As a Blue Jay fan, I love to hate the Yankees but I've always had a soft spot for Jeter. He is such a class act.

One day, when the Yankees were in town, Jeter did one of those everyday little things - everyday little things for HIM, that is - that mean quite a lot. A recent Blue Jay call-up from the minors got his first major league hit and Jeter was the first guy on the field to alert one of the umpires to save the ball.

He really cares about the game and it was nice to see the game love him back tonight.

Reminds me of Kevin Costner's FOR LOVE OF THE GAME..

I am a sucker for feel good stories like that.. :D

I fully understand your feelings towards Jeter and the Yankees. Um, OK, I'll say something nice about him (just this once): he may be the funniest sports star I've ever seen on Saturday Night Live. His appearances are hilarious. He's got a second career in comedy waiting for him!

As for the Blue Jays, what happened to them in the past month? They were on top of the world, and then they just collapsed...

Of course, that means the Orioles are in first place in that division, which is ALWAYS a good thing (as far as I'm concerned).

    Heh.

The bats just went silent, though pitching hasn't been bad at all and there have been some injuries.

Come to think of it, the Blue Jays don't seem to be in very good shape - the slightest little things are taking them out of games and onto the DL list ???

    Indeed. :)

And, contrast that with the story I often tell about A-Rod ... the one where he's on second and the Yankee batter hits a fly ball between the second and third basemen - it was deep enough not to invoke the infield fly rule - and so both defenders are vying to catch the ball and A-Rod, as he is running between them on his way to third base, yells rather loudly, "I've got it!" or "It's mine!" or something like that - I don't remember anymore his exact words, just the UNSPORTSMAN-LIKE behavior on the whole - with the ball falling to the field as our second and third baseman each thought the other had the ball.

I've really disliked A-Rod with a passion ever since. Seriously!

Maybe it's World Cup fever? "OOOUCH! OOOOH, I'm in SOOOO much pain!"

Heh. Couldn't resist. Truthfully, I am glad whenever anyone but the Yankees or the Red Sox are on top of that division. I mean, seriously, it's a tough division to rise in...

    Michale -

Still haven't seen the Croods yet, but I did watch the end of "24" (they should have called it "12", it was only a half-season...).

OK, I understand your rage, but I have to admit, that's a pretty funny story!

    :-)

My wife is commiserating, as the Giants have followed a similar path for the last month as the Blue Jays.

Maybe it's the O's year? One can only hope...

Actually, it was still a 24 hour day for Jack Bauer. The last episode took place from 10pm to 11am...

It was a pretty awesome run.. :D

All's fair in love and war.. :D

I concede though, that's a pretty nasty trick...

People who have that "win at any cost" attitude just drive me to drink..

Well, it's actually more of a short walk, but...... :D

One thing I noticed and wanted to see if it was just me..

All the promos for 24 this season had Bauer supporting Chloe and dragging her down the street while shooting off his entire clip and yelling...

I didn't see that happen at ALL in the series...

Did I just miss it or did that scene end up on the cutting room floor??

Yeah, but he slept for most of that. Pretty thin. I mean, in the first season, didn't his daughter get kidnapped not once but TWICE in the same day, by two separate groups of baddies? I mean, they had 12 whole hours to work with...

    Heh.

    And, as for [13] -

My wife heavily complained about the same thing, right before the final episode: "we saw a flipped-over Mini with a British flag in all the commercials, but we DIDN'T see it in any of the missiles-raining-down-on-London scenes, so WHERE IS IT?!?"

Maybe it wound up on the cutting room floor, or maybe it was just filmed for a teaser....

But my wife does agree with you, just to let you know.
