Playing Hooky, In A Giant Way

[ Posted Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 – 21:29 UTC ]

OK, so I played hooky today. Instead of writing a column, I went and did something fun with my wife. But I thought I'd at least share with you folks what I was doing.

Here is a bit of my wife's arm, right next to the 2012 World Series Champions trophy, won by the San Francisco Giants:

World Series Trophies

The Giants send the trophy on a little tour of Northern California, so fans can see it close to home. Which is pretty cool, I have to admit (and a good marketing idea -- they were doing brisk sales of all sorts of "World Champion" Giants stuff, as well as "official" photos).

The coolest thing about it was you could just walk right up to it, and there it was -- no intervening glass or plastic or laser array, it was just right there on the table in front of you. In fact, there wasn't just a trophy on the table, there were TWO trophies:

World Series Trophies

The one on the left is from 2010, and the one on the right is the 2012 trophy. Now, this might seem a tad greedy to some, but consider that the last time the Giants won the World Series previous to these two years, they were still in New York, back in 1954. So while they have won twice in three years, it was after a pretty long drought.

While the Giants have won the World Series seven times overall, an even more impressive statistic is that they are second only to the New York Yankees in World Series appearances, at 19.

In any case, that's what I was doing today, and that's why there's no column (other than this "dog ate my homework" pathetic excuse for a column) today. Every once in a while, you have to just drop politics and go do something fun!

Regular columns will reappear tomorrow, right on schedule.

Hank Augirre was "The Yankee Killer". Thought it was Drysdale, coulda been Koufax. Of course Bob Gibson did well too.

FOOTball? Um... that'd be the San Francsico 49ers. Or the Baltimore Ravens. Or the (current) New York Giants.

The (former) New York Giants moved to San Francisco, and they play a different game...

    Whoda thunk that,

    Last in the American League"

    Wouldn't be funny anymore.
