Televised January 6th Hearings To Begin Next Week

[ Posted Wednesday, June 1st, 2022 – 15:25 UTC ]

Next Thursday, if all goes according to schedule, the nation will finally start to see what the House Select Committee on January 6th has uncovered during its lengthy investigation of the worst attack on the United States Capitol since 1814. This won't be a one-time show either -- there will be at least eight installments of this miniseries in June, with some of them appearing in primetime.

The date for the first hearing is not set in stone (there are no hearings currently scheduled on the committee's official web page), but this does seem to be the target for the kickoff:

Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, who chairs the House select committee investigating the January 6th Capitol Hill insurrection, told reporters Thursday that the committee will hold eight hearings spread out through the month of June.

Thompson said the hearings will be a "mixture of some prime time and some regular" and they "will tell the story about what happened." Thompson also said he expects "at this point the first hearing is June 9th," though that date did not appear to be finalized.

Other committee members have been teasing that the hearings will be absolute blockbusters:

"The story of the worst presidential political offense against the Union in American history," declares US Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the January 6 committee.

"It's going to blow the roof off the House," Raskin exclaims.

We'll all just have to see whether the hearings live up to that level of hype or not.

The committee has been working for roughly a year now, and has reportedly conducted over 800 interviews. It has been rebuffed by those closest and most loyal to Donald Trump, but enough people (who were also in the room for crucial conversations) have testified that this may be immaterial. While the committee has done a fair amount of leaking to the press to serve their own purposes, they have kept the main storyline under wraps throughout the whole investigative period. So there will likely be many surprising and shocking moments during the testimony.

But will the hearings themselves be compelling enough television for enough of the public to pay attention? That is a rather large unanswered question, and I really have no idea what the answer will turn out to be. It sounds crass to say it, because it reduces important and serious things to the level of show business, but that's what this round of public hearings is really all about. Maybe just "showmanship," but no matter what you call it the presentation will be key.

According to what leaks there have been, the committee will attempt to provide a flowing narrative of the entire storyline, not just what happened on one day in Washington. Storytelling isn't usually the purview of congressional committee hearings, although occasionally it is actually critical (impeachment hearings spring to mind). Public perception is the end goal -- making people understand what happened, how it unfolded, and who was involved at every step of the way. To do that, they've got to present a clear and compelling storyline, from beginning to end. That's hard to do when calling witnesses, as any courtroom lawyer can tell you. But when done successfully, the effect is dramatic and riveting. And this is a very important story to tell for the annals of American history.

Those tuning in looking solely for a "comeuppance" of Donald Trump will probably be disappointed in at least one regard, though. Please remember: these are merely congressional committee hearings. It is not any sort of judicial proceeding, it is not part of any law enforcement effort, it is merely an official fact-finding group presenting their findings to the public. To put this another way, there is zero chance of us all seeing Trump getting frogmarched out of his golf resort in handcuffs as a direct result of these hearings. Indirectly, who knows? But even if that happens, it will happen further down the road, not immediately.

I say all of this because among people not besotted with the Dear Leader, millions have been waiting for Trump to get some sort of comeuppance, somewhere. At this point, nobody even really cares what the issue that finally does trip him up turns out to be -- tax fraud, election interference, obstruction of justice, planning a coup from the Oval Office -- anything will do. If there is any sort of justice left in this country at all, then Trump eventually will have to pay for at least one of his crimes (millions of people have been telling themselves). But these people have been let down more than once. Trump always seems to wriggle his way out of any consequences like some demented Teflon eel, swimming free to cause more havoc. Much like the anguished singer in Cabaret, we all look forward to the upcoming hearings hoping: "Maybe this time...."

But this time -- this month's hearings -- will only set the stage, at best. They will provide the background. They will provide the backstory. But that's it. The committee has no police powers, they cannot enforce any laws. But they sure can point out where they think the laws have been broken, hopefully in Technicolor detail.

I would expect to see Representative Liz Cheney take a starring role in the upcoming show. Cheney is the one person almost guaranteed to get under Trump's skin -- which she has very effective at doing, ever since January 6th. If anyone's going to make Trump's head (figuratively) explode, it'll likely be her. So I would hope to see her shine during the hearings -- shine with righteous indignation in strong defense of the United States Constitution. So far, her auditions for this role have been very impressive, you'll have to admit.

I have no idea how the rest of the public will react to this summertime miniseries. It could be a smash hit, and it could be a total bust -- a snoozefest of epic proportions. It's revelations may be so small and technical they're hard to even explain, or they could be breathtakingly stunning and shocking to all who see them. It may change the course of politics for the midterm campaign and even the 2024 presidential race, or it could turn out to be a big nothingburger in the end.

The one thing I can promise everyone is that, barring any critical and unforeseen circumstances, I will be watching these hearings from beginning to end. I will be taking notes and I will be reviewing each installment here. I cannot promise I'll post these immediately after each hearing -- that might depend on when they air and how long (and how complicated) each one is. But I will be glued to my television set throughout. So even if you don't have time to catch the whole miniseries, you will always be able to check here for updates and reviews, seen through my own admittedly biased eyes.

Personally, I can't wait for them to start. I'm hoping for a summer blockbuster which blows the socks off everyone. So check back after every installment, if you want to see whether my socks are still (figuratively) on or not. Our continuing motto here, when it comes to political television: "We watch so you don't have to!

Thank-you, Chris, from the bottom of my heart. You have my sympathies and appreciation, indeed!

Seattle police’s sexual assault and child abuse unit staff has been so depleted that it stopped assigning to detectives this year new cases with adult victims, according to an internal memo sent to interim police Chief Adrian Diaz in April.

The unit’s sergeant put her staffing crisis in stark terms.

“The community expects our agency to respond to reports of sexual violence,” Sgt. Pamela St. John wrote, “and at current staffing levels that objective is unattainable.”

Law enforcement agencies here and across the country have grappled with labor shortages during the pandemic and since the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd. But Seattle’s failure to staff its sexual assault unit stands out from other local police departments and raises questions about the Seattle Police Department’s priorities, advocates say.

Why Does the White House Oppose 'Hardening' Schools?

As Katie noted yesterday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated during her Tuesday press briefing that President Biden does not support the 'hardening' of schools as part of the conversations on anti-mass shooting solutions. In this answer, it very much sounds like Jean-Pierre is ruling out beefed-up school safety as something Biden would be willing to consider.

She says that her boss does not believe in hardening schools, then strangely transitions to rote education-related talking points about funding the needs of teachers, which is not the point of this conversation (also, the 'under-funded schools' trope is especially dubious these days). It could be that she's once again communicating poorly, perhaps necessitating a walk-back -- a Biden administration specialty. Or he might be embracing a blinders-on fixation on gun control, at the exclusion of everything else, as the acceptable "solution" to America's mass shooting problem. In my list of ideas to which I'm at least open, increasing school security featured prominently. I'm not excited by the prospect of schools being transformed into fortresses, but having trained, armed security at least gives defenseless kids a chance if a demented person decides to show up on campus, bent on mayhem and death.
    https://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2022/06/01/why-does-biden-oppose-hardening-schools-n2608023

Obviously Democrats don't CARE about school shootings.. All they care about is leaving children defenseless and exposed in school...

Joe Biden has written an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal detailing his plan to fight inflation.

Well, perhaps the word “detailing” is too generous. The preponderance of the column features Biden taking credit for economic growth that can be attributed to the reopening of an economy that was shuttered by the governing class during Covid. Biden, of course, not only championed those closings, but was critical of Republican governors who opened their states before he deemed it appropriate.

But with midterms approaching, there’s been a concerted effort underway to exonerate the president, and thus Democrats, of any culpability for rising prices. Biden sycophant “Morning Joe,” for example, contends that anyone who blames the president for more than a “passing impact” on inflation is a “lying hack or an ignorant rube.” One wonders if that group includes former Obama adviser Steve Rattner, who argues that inflation has been driven by government putting “too much money in people’s pockets?” Or Obama’s one-time Director of the National Economic Council Larry Summers, who had been warning for more than a year that cash infusions would exacerbate inflation? Or Jeff Bezos, who correctly pointed out that the “administration tried hard to inject even more stimulus into an already over-heated, inflationary economy?”

Even if we were to concede that there is no good way to quantify exactly how much recent spending helped propel inflation — which is outpacing other Western nations — it’s clear that the Biden administration completely mismanaged what should have been a slam-dunk recovery.

Biden/Democrat incompetence is firmly and unequivocally responsible for the state of the economy in the here and now..

According to reports, we are just a couple weeks away from a national price of over $5 a gallon for gas..

Democrats/Biden OWN this.. Totally and unequivocally...

    WHAT DURHAM PROVED.

The trial of Michael Sussmann is before a jury in Washington, D.C. Sussmann is the Democratic lawyer who, according to special counsel John Durham, lied to the FBI in 2016 when, working on behalf of the Hillary Clinton campaign, he tried to plant a derogatory story about Donald Trump. The hope was that the FBI would start an investigation and then the campaign conversation would be: TRUMP IS UNDER FBI INVESTIGATION!

There is no doubt Sussmann lied to the FBI. There is no doubt he is guilty. But the trial is taking place in Washington, perhaps the deepest-blue jury pool in the United States. Durham's prosecutors are "facing a jury that has three Clinton donors, an AOC donor, and a woman whose daughter is on the same sports team as Sussmann's daughter," George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley said recently on Fox News. "With the exception of randomly selecting people out of DNC headquarters, you could not come up with a worse jury."

The simple fact is, Durham's actions put into the public record from multiple sources one all encompassing fact..

Although making a direct connection between all the people restored all over the universe and Tony losing his daughter might be too much of a stretch..

On the other hand, it seems pretty selfish to me that the Avengers would ONLY be concerned about humans on Earth and the rest of the galaxy can go pound sand..

On the THIRD hand, there might be a civilization out there that WELCOMED Thanos' actions and would NOT want Thanos' actions reversed..

    It's an interesting intellectual conundrum..

51 people shot over Memorial Day weekend in Chicago, the most violent in five years

About half of those shot were on the West Side, most of them in a single police district where there were two mass shootings. At least 23 people were shot on the South Side and four downtown.

TWO AND A HALF Unvaldes occurred in Chicago over a single weekend!!

It’s important to remember that “mass shootings” are defined as “three or more people shot”. “Shot” does not necessarily mean that the person died. In fact, “shot” is typically used to indicate that the person was not killed in the incident.

    51 people shot in Chicago.
23 people on the Southside were shot.
    4 people were shot downtown.
That means 24 people on the West Side were shot. If 2 shootings had 3 victims each (6 people shot), then that leaves 18 shooting victims shot by 9 - 18 total shooters. That means on the West Side, those 24 people shot could be the work of up to 20 different shooters.

Overall, Chicago could have had 51 people being shot by 47 different shooters. And since you are not listing the number killed in these shootings, we must assume that they all survived.

A single gunman walked into the Unvaldes‘ elementary school and KILLED 21 people!!!

So, NO, TWO AND A HALF Unvaldes DID NOT occur in Chicago over a single weekend!!

How sick of a fuk are you that you feel the need to lie about the slaughter of 19 children and two teachers by a single person?!?! If you did not recognize the role that assault rifles played in these murders, you wouldn’t feel the need to make up these false equivalencies!

And why do Trump supporters always sound giddy when they talk about the number of blacks killed in Chicago?

    This is interesting..

So, when I say you are a Democrat, you think that is "disparaging"..

Not at all, as I've already explained multiple times. It's LYING and putting words in the mouths of other posters and discussing them personally rather than discussing political issues. Same shit, different day.

Well, I can definitely see why you would think that.

I don't think that. You're making shit up about me personally... as per your usual.

If someone accused ME of being a Democrat, I would be a tad miffed as well...

If you think referring to someone as a "Democrat" or "Republican" or "Libertarian" or whatever Party constitutes an "accusation," then check your mirror for the source of your problem.

If someone in the comments section kept claiming over and over ad nauseam that you were a Democrat, you'd have no reason to be "miffed" but plenty of archived reasons to prove they're a repetitive liar or can't retain
simple concepts from one day to another.

So I understand you more now...

    No, you clearly do not.

It's like when you were accusing me of being gay..

First, you're putting words in my mouth AGAIN that I never said. Second, I would never "accuse" anyone of being "gay" in the same manner I would never "accuse" them of being "straight" or heterosexual or anything... works the same way with Party affiliation and me not taking it as an "accusation" in the same manner as you do.

You must have thought that was a great insult which indicates your thoughts on gay-ness more than than anything else..

Said the guy who claimed I "accused" him of it (I did not). If you think being called "gay" would constitute being "accused" of it, when it definitely is NOT, you might want to check your mirror.

I am learning more and more about you..

Nah. You are inventing bullshit and obsessing about me personally like you frequently do.

That's why it's easier to give you the kindness and understanding you seek, Kick.

Me? Seeking kindness? Heh. Perhaps you have confused me with Elizabeth Miller; she frequently seeks kindness. Of course, I am not "accusing" her of seeking kindness, it's just who she is.
