No Worries About The New Normal On The Banished Words List

[ Posted Monday, January 3rd, 2022 – 17:32 UTC ]

Yes, it is that time again, folks! The time when we check in with the learnèd word mavens of Lake Superior State University in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan to see what they've put on their annual Banished Words List. So if you're ready to Gitche Gumee on (so to speak), let's all take a look at the overused phrases to be "banished" from the vernacular, shall we?

Maybe it was COVID exhaustion or something, but this year's list is rather small, with only ten entries. "Wait, what?" seems to be the favorite (at least in the headlines) in other news stories I've seen.

Their explanation is worth citing, for this particular entry:

The No. 1 offender: "Wait, what?" These two four-letter words should not go together under any circumstances, according to many nominators and the contest judges from the LSSU English Department, because the two-part halting interrogative is disingenuous, divergent, deflective, and other damning words that begin with the letter d.

Hey, it is the English Department, so you've got to give them a little poetic license, right?

Here's their whole list:

Wait, what?

No worries

At the end of the day

That being said

Asking for a friend

Circle back

Deep dive

New normal

You're on mute

Supply chain

As usual, each entry is followed by the reasons it achieved banished status, but (surprisingly) the entry for: "No worries" didn't even mention one that seems rather obvious: trying to sound Australian, to be cool. Although perhaps that should be reserved for: "No worries, mate!"

One of the banished phrases ("At the end of the day") is actually a repeat, since they fully admit they tried to banish it before: "Twenty-plus years after original banishment of this phrase in 1999, the day still isn't over for this misused, overused, and useless expression."

Of course, one of the traditions with the Banished Words List is exhibiting some grammar-inspired snark, and this year was no different. The word "cutesy" was even deployed under "Asking for a friend":

Misuse and overuse through deceit -- because the friend is a ruse. This cutesy phrase, often deployed in social media posts in a coy attempt to deter self-identification, isn't fooling anyone.

And, as usual, some were delightfully pedantic: "Do we need 'deep'? I mean, does anyone dive into the shallow end?"

The last three on the list were all COVID-related in one way or another, and "You're on mute" brought out what can only be described as exasperation: "We're two years into remote working and visiting. It's time for everyone to figure out where the mute button is."

What did kind of surprise me was the total absence of what I would call "teen slang" or perhaps "hipper-than-thou" references. Most years, you get at least a few of these -- some of which I have to look up to even understand what they're talking about (it's been a long time since I was a teen, which should be obvious by my own usage of "hip" a moment ago...). I guess teens have had a diminished impact on popular culture due to being locked down for much of the year? It's a theory, at any rate.

In any case (a phrase that I am almost certain has been banished previously, but I admit that I'm too lazy to look it up...), let's kick off 2022 in our own traditional fashion, by cramming all of these overused trite phrases into one paragraph:

At the end of the day, we all certainly hope that Omicron will become known as "at the end of the pandemic," and hopefully our new normal will circle back into being some semblance of the old normal. Supply chains will unkink, masks will disappear, and we can all once again tell each other: "No worries" -- and actually mean it. We'll be able to sit in a room with each other once again and never have to tell someone: "You're on mute" during a casual conversation. We'll never again (well, hopefully) have to do a deep dive into the inner workings of the C.D.C. or the arcane worlds of epidemiology or virology. That being said, maybe there will be a silver lining to all of this. Maybe in the future a heap of negative connotations will forever change the meaning of "going viral." Instead of being seen as a good thing, maybe people will react more along the lines of: "Wait, what?" Hey, don't look at me like I'm crazy... I'm just asking for a friend.

In the early days of the WHO daily pandemic pressers, journalists had to be told a million times if they were told once to, "Please, unmute yourself!"

Two years into this thing and Tarik, Margaret and Christian (who each have an unending supply of patience) don't have to ask them that, much, anymore.

A good chunk of those early not-to-be-missed WHO pandemic press conferences were taken up with journalists being asked first, to unmute themselves, then all the time it took for them to actually unmute themselves and then all the "Can you hear me now" questions. ;)

Wait, what? Is that a trick question? Clearly, the GOP has taken a dive into the shallow end. Deep dive? They seem pretty deep into it to me with only a few spines among them with which to circle back. That being said, the longer they linger there like jellyfish, at the end of the day it becomes their new normal.

As for the supply chain, I see you're on mute and have not updated the fundraising meter. You going to do that anytime soon? Asking for a friend.

At one point, "hopefully," in the sense of "with reasonable good luck," was one of the words people were trying to banish. In those days, careful speakers only used the word to mean "in a hopeful manner," such as "Wilbur waited hopefully for the money the Nigerian prince had promised him."

Ted Cruz: ‘Multiple grounds to consider’ for Biden impeachment if GOP wins House

Sen. Ted Cruz said that a Republican-led House after the 2022 elections likely will consider impeaching President Biden on “multiple grounds.”

In the latest episode of his podcast “Verdict with Ted Cruz,” the Texas Republican said he was extremely confident that his party will win Congressional majorities and that this would open the door for retaliation against the Democrats for impeaching then-President Donald Trump.

“If we take the House, which I said is overwhelmingly likely, then I think we will see serious investigations of the Biden administration,” he told co-hosts Michael Knowles and Liz Wheeler, saying the odds were 90% and “may even be higher.”

Mr. Cruz made it clear he would prefer to live in a world where impeachment weren’t a routine event — only one president was impeached in the first 200 years of the republic.

But he said the current world and its impeachment standards are what the Democrats have created “whether it’s justified or not.”

Just one more fact that PROVES the old adage..

Democrats are frak'ed in the head and never consider the long-term consequences of their short-term solutions..

Which is why we have a 6-3 Conservative SCOTUS and why Democrats Baby-Killing machine is going to be a thing of the past. At least in Red States that actually CARE about human life..

And, since it's a foregone conclusion that the GOP WILL take the House (at least, according to Democrats) I think we can count on at least 2 impeachments per year for Basement Biden's lame duck last two years of his term.

Which is going to make Basement Biden the most impeached POTUS in the history of the country..

Yep.. 2022 is going to be a great year.. :D

Less than a year away from the midterm elections, the implications for the president’s party are clear. Seven of the last 10 polls included in the RealClearPolitics average show Republicans leading on the generic congressional ballot, in which respondents are asked to pick which party they want to see control Congress, with two ties and only one Democratic lead. The average is a 2.4-point GOP lead, with Democrats taking just 41.7% of the vote.

What's funny is that the above article actually delves into the fact that it's Democrats being so "woke" that is causing the Democrat Party to crash and burn..

Patriotic Americans are turned off by identity politics and the fighting and violence from the Democrat Party..

    https://thefederalist.com/2022/01/03/far-left-district-attorneys-have-unleashed-murder-in-cities-like-philadelphia/

    It's costing Americans their lives...

Just ask the parade goers in Waukesha, WI.. At least the ones that weren't brutally murdered.

And it's not just in Philadelphia... Democrat cities all over the country are being inundated with DAs who refuse to put violent criminals in jail and keep them there..

Even before COVID or BLM riots, crime rates began to rise under leftist district attorneys who refuse to put criminals in jail.

And it's NOT just because of COVID..

But crime started rising before anyone in Philly ever heard of Wuhan or George Floyd. Years before that, change was already underway when Philadelphians elected a district attorney determined to do anything but put criminals in jail.

Larry Krasner was one of many George Soros-backed progressives elected in Democratic cities, part of the far-left backlash against Donald Trump’s 2016 victory. Energized to do something — anything — to spite the man in the White House, lefty voter turnout soared and led to Krasner, a career defense attorney, being placed at the head of the city’s law enforcement regime.

It has been an unmitigated disaster. In the face of rising crime, the DA has alienated cops, forced out career prosecutors, and rigged the bail system to dump more criminals back onto the streets. Between intentional weakness on crime and more conventional ineptitude, all of the gains of the 1990s and early 2000s have been erased. The average Philadelphian has a greater chance of being the victim of a crime than ever before. This is the “progress” leftist prosecutors have wrought.

The problem here is Democrats.. Pure and simple.

    They are pro-criminal and pro-crime..

And, when Democrats are put in a position to decide who goes to jail and who doesn't?? They violent criminal is virtually always turned loose.

But a good cop like Kim Potter?? A woman who served honorably for 26 years and gave the public a quarter century of service??

SHE must be kept in jail..

It's a sad sad commentary on Democrat Party governance that a scumbag like Darrell Brooks Jr is allowed to roam the streets after an Attempted Murder charge and a good honest cop like Kim Potter is kept in jail pending her appeal that will exonerate her...

That's today's Democrat Party. And it sucks...

And it's not just in Philadelphia... Democrat cities all over the country are being inundated with DAs who refuse to put violent criminals in jail and keep them there..

Here are five of the scumbag DAs that have gallons and gallons of blood on their hands..

Since we started in Philly above, let's start with Philly here..

    Larry Krasner

Philadelphia’s liberal district attorney has come under fire for presiding over an explosion in gun violence — and for attempting to downplay it.

Just typical of a Democrat... Using anti-America policies, create a huge problem and then deny the problem exists.. Just like Basement Biden and his "Inflation is just a passing phase" BS...

    Chesa Boudin

Raised by radicals from the far-left Weather Underground group after his parents went to prison for murder, Boudin campaigned to become San Francisco’s district attorney on an aggressively liberal criminal justice platform.

He now faces a recall election in June as the people of his deeply Democratic city question the leniency with which he’s approached crime since taking office in 2020.

Boudin fulfilled his campaign promise to get rid of cash bail upon taking office, noting on his website that “everyone who does not pose a serious public safety risk should be free from jail while their case is pending.”

But under Boudin’s watch, crime has flourished in San Francisco. Residents now face 1-in-16 odds of becoming a victim of a crime, according to the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, which described San Francisco in November as more dangerous than 98% of U.S. cities.

Another Left Wing moron who supports criminals' rights over victims' rights..

It's because of dipshits like Boudin that Darrell Brooks Jr was free to brutally murder 6 innocent people including senior citizens and a small child.. But good people and good cops like Officer Potter languish in jail..

    Marilyn Mosby

Under the guise of public health, Baltimore’s top prosecutor said her office would stop prosecuting drug possession, attempted drug distribution, trespassing, prostitution, and other nonviolent offenses in March 2020 to lower the risk of spreading the coronavirus in prison.

The Baltimore City state’s attorney ultimately made those policy changes permanent, continuing a trend of liberal criminal justice policies that she has implemented since taking office in 2015.

Her refusal to prosecute a number of lower-level crimes as homicides have soared prompted Republican Gov. Larry Hogan to order an investigation into whether her office should continue to receive state funds.

Baltimore has experienced consistently high homicide rates over the past several years, weathering more than 300 murders this year.

Another moron Democrats who has caused a massive spike in violent crime...

The facts are conclusive... Broken Windows Policing and Prosecuting WORKS.. It's been proven factual time and time again..

But these progressive Democrats are more concerned with coddling criminals and scumbags and don't give a rip about their past and future victims..

I gotta get to work, so I'll finish this up in a bit..

And of course there is the Smollett apologist....

    Kim Foxx

Chicago-area State’s Attorney Kim Foxx has found herself embroiled in controversy for months over her office’s decision last year not to prosecute Jussie Smollett, the former actor now convicted of staging a hate crime against himself in an attempt to get publicity.

A special prosecutor who investigated the circumstances behind the controversial deal Foxx cut for Smollett found she and her team committed “substantial abuses of discretion,” although he concluded her actions fell short of criminal conduct.

But Foxx’s liberal leanings have invited scrutiny that goes well beyond her handling of Smollett’s high-profile hoax.

An analysis from the Chicago Tribune last year found Foxx had dropped all charges in nearly a third of felony cases sent her way, declining to prosecute murder and other serious crimes far more often than the previous Cook County state’s attorney.

With crime in Chicago skyrocketing, the city’s Democratic mayor recently joined with critics of Foxx’s office in questioning why the state’s attorney has failed to prosecute more shootings.

This Democrat moron declined to press charges against ANYONE in a massive gang shootout... Her moronic reasoning?? Since they were both shooting at each other, it was a mutual combat situation and NO ONE gets charged with ANYTHING...

Well, it's obvious it doesn't take much brain cells to be a Democrat these days.. :eyeroll:

And, of course, our list of Democrat Moron DAs would not be complete with another Californian...

    George Gascon

Los Angeles’s district attorney faces a recall effort of his own thanks to residents who resent his approach to preventing violence in their city.

Gascon has pursued many of the same policies embraced by similarly liberal prosecutors in other major cities, such as ending cash bail and moving away from the death penalty.

But Gascon has gone further , eliminating criteria upon taking office that encouraged longer sentences for criminals associated with gangs or who had committed multiple prior crimes.

Gascon instructed prosecutors in his office to stop seeking the sentence of life without parole, even for murder convictions.

Homicides in Los Angeles rose 46% in the year Gascon has held office.

These DAs and many more like them are coddling criminals and making their respective areas into hellholes of violent crime..

And Democrats wonder why violent crime is so rampant in Democrat run areas... Because those areas are very Criminal Friendly....

Nov 2022 simply cannot come soon enough...

A majority Americans begin 2022 full of worry and dread. During President Biden’s first year in the White House, societal anxiety surged, including among voters who identify as independents and Democrats. In the newest Axios/Momentive year-end survey, 2021 saw a 50% increase in fear about what 2022 will bring among independents. Democrats weren’t much more sanguine. They began last year with refreshing optimism as their party took control of the White House and Congress, with only 19% of Democratic voters declaring themselves fearful about 2021. By year’s end, that number had surged to 45%.

And, as we all know, RCP is an official News Source of Weigantia(™michale)... :D

It's really fascinating.. Basement Biden enjoyed a net +20 approval rating at the beginning of his term.. And just one year into it, he has a net -10... Talk about Buyer's Remorse, eh!!

For eight straight months, real wages have declined under Biden. The ravages of inflation, predictably, hit the working classes the hardest. For example, a recent Gallup poll found that among modest earners making $40,000 or less per year, 71% report that inflation is a severe or moderate hardship. In contrast, among workers earning $100,000 per year or more, only 2% cited inflation as a severe hardship. A November Quinnipiac survey found that Biden still enjoyed a slight positive approval rating on the economy among those with college degrees, 50%-49%. But among non-degree holders, Biden languishes 54 percentage points underwater, with only 20% approval and 74% disapproval. Inflation helps explain this huge chasm.

My gods, Basement Biden is really stepping in the kaa kaa, eh??

From a policy standpoint, the America First agenda must embrace this issue for elections, from school boards all the way to the U.S. Senate. Stop radical teachers and their unions from sexualizing young children and indoctrinating them with unscientific gender-fluid psychobabble. Forbid any public buildings or funds for such atrocities as drag-queen story times for children. Make illegal the infiltration of girls’ and women’s sports by biological males.

One of Democrats BIGGEST mistakes (right next to their DEFUND, DEMONIZE AND DEMORALIZE THE POLICE policy agenda) was declaring war on parents.. I mean, COM'ON!! Invoking the PATRIOT ACT against parents whose SOLE "crime" is to have their children EDUCATED, not indoctrinated..

Between the racist CRT and the BS claim of multiple genders beyond male and female, Democrats prove time and time again that they are simply not competent to teach our children...

Once again.. Nov 2022 simply cannot come soon enough...

Is this the end of progressive America???

    We can only hope so...

Over the past several decades, the progressive Left has successfully fulfilled Antonio Gramsci’s famed admonition of a “long march through the institutions”. In almost every Western country, its adherents now dominate the education system, media, cultural institutions, and financial behemoths.

But what do they have to show for it? Not as much as they might have expected. Rather than a Bolshevik-style assumption of power, there’s every chance this institutional triumph will not produce an enduring political victory, let alone substantially change public opinion.

Even before Biden’s botched Build Back Better initiative, American progressives faced opposition to their wildly impractical claims about achieving “zero Covid” and “zero emissions”, confronting “systemic racism” by defunding the police, regulating speech, and redefining two biological sexes into a multiplicity.

On every front, Democrats are fighting losing battles in their efforts to "fundamentally change America" to their idea of a Progressive Utopia..

The vast majority of Americans simply don't want to buy what the Democrat Party is selling..

Now, of course ya'all will respond with the boiler-plate BS that "Democrat policies are very popular" blaa blaa blaa.. But those polls quoted are simply from Democrat rags who phrase the poll questions to produce the desired result.. And then of course that claim begs the question, "If those policies are so popular why did Build Back Broke fail?? Why not put those so-called 'popular' polices up for a vote as stand-alone legislation??"

Because Democrats know that those 'popular' policies will utterly fail..

    So, my facts still stand..

There has been massive hysteria from the Left and Trump America haters over 6 Jan..

And the USCP is STILL 400 LEOs short..

And Victoria ran away after her cites were exposed as lies...

Then you can quote them, right???

Why do you have such an issue with backing up your claims by quoting the facts that support your claims??

It would make things SO much easier if you actually had FACTS to support your claims?? Like the fact that, with all this alleged funding you and Victoria claims exist, why the USCP is still down 400 LEOs???

But in this case, you are correct.. I made an error.. I was just reading the cover sheet and neglected to notice the supplemental tabs.. So sue me.. :D

As you know, my evenings belong to my lovely wife and best friend of 40 years... So I will review the supplemental tabs in the morning and determine if, in fact, it is what you and Victoria claim it is and if, in fact, it says what you and Victoria claim it says..

I'll render my judgment in the morning..

Until then, ya'all have a REAL fun night, eh?? :D

    By the bi, Victoria....

Where is that bill you said exists??

Please make a post that screams "Mike generally has no clue about political events, and you can rub an uninformed dipshit's nose in it but it won't make him think."

Yunno.. The 2 billion dollars for the USCP legislation that you said passed??

In your post, please confirm you're an uninformed rube who has no clue about congressional legislation already signed into law.

The ONLY link you have shown was from the CNN Democrat/Pedo Network and that was just about a backroom deal made..

Please further confirm you haven't got a scintilla of sense to know on what page of the forum you will find the answer. Also, the QAnon conspiracy nuts and grifters who sell merch to them and make money off their rank stupidity are finding the money slowing and are therefore infighting, and one of the things you'll find they do is attempt to discredit each other by referring to them as pedophiles, illuminati, and all those other conspiracy theory nut terms they like to throw around. Since you're slow and clearly need your nose rubbed in it, my point is that you sound like a conspiracy theory nut job.

There's been no 2 billion dollar bill for the USCP. You know it.. I know it.. Everyone in Weigantia(™michale) knows it...

Everyone definitely knows how you twist words and your general ignorance regarding facts is, of course, legendary around here. I responded to one of your frequent incorrect posts wherein you claimed that Democrats defunded them that the USCP was funded in a bipartisan bill for approximately $2 billion.

I live rent-free in your head, and I can report there's no clue in here.

You seem to be confused. I just read her link about
H.R.3237 in the previous thread. I think the problem is your continued inability to read...

I guess it never occurred to him to check for the answer on the page where it was being discussed. He's infinitely slow and needs his nose rubbed in things, you know, but I have a question:

How did you remove his head from Donald Trump's ass?

    Funny thing about that bill..

NOTHING in it mentions ANYTHING about funding for the US Capitol Police... All that is mentioned is a QRF that the USCP already had in place... :eyeroll:

Funny thing about your reading ability: It's practically nonexistent. Keep rolling your eyes, maybe you'll find a brain cell in there.

And Victoria ran away after her cites were exposed as lies...

Please continue to post in a manner that proves you're not just the board troll, you're the ignorant board troll with no clue regarding bills signed into law and no ability to comprehend simple English.

You really have no idea how ignorant you appear... also desperate and obsessed. :)

You posted incorrect information about Democrats defunding the police. I pointed your ignorance to the information regarding the funding. Then you posted incorrect information about the bill saying it hadn't been signed into law. Duh. Then you mischaracterized the multibillion security bill as the COVID relief bill, which is dumb and dumber since the COVID bill was trillions of dollars and not a couple billion. In other words, you weren't content to appear ignorant... you got your shovel and kept digging.

You're misinformed and uninformed and hands down the poster who deposits the most incorrect information onto this forum. When you're obviously wrong, you reframe the debate and still claim you're correct. Are you ignorant enough to think there's anyone here who isn't fully aware of your prattling modus operandi? Rhetorical question.

As you know, my evenings belong to my lovely wife and best friend of 40 years...

Yes, Bashi knows. Hey, Bashi, I think Horizontal Hubby is just jealous of Kamala since he actually slept his way all the way to the bottom of the swamps. Heh.

So I will review the supplemental tabs in the morning and determine if, in fact, it is what you and Victoria claim it is and if, in fact, it says what you and Victoria claim it says..

You mean that bill that was signed into law that you claimed wasn't because you're ignorant of facts? You needn't bother.

So let's review your false claim from yesterday:

But, obviously, Democrats don't care enough about a supposed "coup" or an alleged "insurrection" at the US Capitol building enough to actually FUND the Capitol Police, eh??? :eyeroll:

    ~ Michale

Incorrect. The Democrats care about the insurrection and have funded the Capitol Police. It's the GOP misinformation and their useful idiots regurgitating the lies who are trying and flailing desperately to downplay and whitewash the incident and shift the blame, but the evidence doesn't lie.

Is this a trick question? The obvious answer is, Trump is such a big asshole he can accommodate millions of Trumpanzies down there. With room left over for the DOJ and Manhattan D.A.
