Nominations Are Open For 2023 Year-End Awards

[ Posted Tuesday, December 5th, 2023 – 16:42 UTC ]

'Tis the season once again to solicit nominations for our year-end awards. Welcome to the first round of categories!

Before we get to the list, a few words on the rest of the year's calendar. Although I am probably going to regret this later, I have decided to run the awards columns later rather than earlier. This means that this Friday and next Friday, our usual "Friday Talking Points" columns will appear. But then our first awards column will arrive on December 22nd, with the second installment appearing between the holidays, on December 29th. This means working the final week of the year for me, but since the holidays fall on Mondays this year I think it'll be manageable (as I said, I may come to regret those words later!). To make it more so, I won't be posting any original columns on any of the other days in the final week of the year.

New Friday Talking Points columns will resume on the first Friday of the new year, January 5th.

For now, here is the list of categories for our year-end awards. If your memory needs refreshment for any reason, check out last year's awards to see all the previous winners.

Everybody ready? Thinking caps on? Here we go:

Biggest Winner of 2023

Biggest Loser of 2023

Best Politician

Worst Politician

Most Defining Political Moment

Turncoat Of The Year

Most Boring

Most Charismatic

Bummest Rap

Fairest Rap

Best Comeback

Most Original Thinker

Most Stagnant Thinker

Best Photo Op

Worst Photo Op

Enough Already!

Worst Lie

Capitalist Of The Year

And don't forget, these are just half of the annual awards. There will be plenty of other categories if anyone gets missed in the first round. The nominations are now open, so let me know who you think deserves recognition for all of 2023.

Enough of the Trumpian lies already.

    Beginning with...

Trump: "I will never lie to you." August 2016

    AWTBC*: "You just did."

    ... and more recently...

Trump: "I often say Al Capone, he was one of the greatest of all time, if you like criminals. He was a mob boss the likes of which – Scarface, they call him – he got indicted once. I got indicted four times." Yesterday, 12/05/2023

AWTBC*: Al Capone was obviously indicted more than once.

What better way to downplay your criminality while simultaneously defrauding and fleecing the MAGAts, morons and marks out of their money? Poor Perpetually Aggrieved Donald. The con never stops.

Biggest Winner of 2023 - Mike Johnson
Biggest Loser of 2023 - Rudy Giuliani
    Best Politician - Gavin Newsome
    Worst Politician - Kevin McCarthy
Most Defining Political Moment - January 6 televised hearings
Turncoat Of The Year - Matt Gaetz
Most Boring - Joe Biden. It's his superpower.
Most Charismatic - Laphonza Butler, acting senator for California
Bummest Rap - Israel. I mean really, it's an impossible choice between terrible options, and nobody except perhaps Ukraine has any business criticizing their response, no matter how poorly conceived it's been so far.
Fairest Rap - George Santos. Runners-up are the January 6 terrorists.
    Best Comeback - Nikki Haley
Most Original Thinker - Fani Willis and her team for their RICO case.
Most Stagnant Thinker - Bibi Netanyahu, for trying like mad to hamstring the Israeli judiciary while Hamas was busy planning the worst attack on Jewish civilians since 1945, then retaliating with an antiquated bombing campaign that has garnered sympathy for the terrorists.
Best Photo Op - Biden in Kyiv
Worst Photo Op - Trump mugshot
Enough Already! - the debt ceiling, Vivek Ramaswamy
Worst Lie - the trump indictments are purely political, not based on actual crimes he committed.
Capitalist Of The Year - investors who shorted Israeli stocks the week before Hamas’ invasion (most likely with some sort of foreknowledge)
Honorable Mention -Ben Thompson, Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Jamie Raskin, and every other January 6 committee member.
Person Of The Year - Lionel Messi

    Kick,

Poor Perpetually Aggrieved Donald. The con never stops.

It got even better during that softball questions-palooza of an “interview”…

When asked if he would abuse power as retribution against others if he was elected president, Trump answered:

”Except for day one…he said ‘You’re not going to be a dictator are you?’ and I said, ‘No, no, no…other than Day One!’”

So Trump claims he will be a Dictator starting Day One of his presidency (or dictatorship), but only for a single day! Right, because lots of dictators in history decided to give up their power after having it for only a single day!

They pre-recorded that interview — in order to be able to edit out Trump’s blunders that would hurt him if the nation heard them — yet they kept these things IN what they aired!?!?! Kinda scary to imagine what they did not air.

They cannot allow Trump to debate on a live stage because his brain is mush. Only these controlled “interviews” with hand-picked crowds of Trump cultists are allowed to be aired. Sadly, when he is found guilty in any of his criminal cases, before he is sentenced you can bet that they will claim Trump is not mentally competent to be held for his crimes… and they might be right that his dementia has overtaken his cognitive abilities. Trump should be sent to what is left of the sanitariums the Republicans gutted when Reagan was President to carry out his sentence. Those that knew Trump has been mentally unstable but waited until the last moment to tell the world of this fact should be sentenced to join Trump.

Biggest Winner of 2023: Democrats/freedom defeating Republicans/extremism... sorry (not sorry) to Glenn Youngkin.

Biggest Loser of 2023: Florida Man/election denier... Ron DeSantis

Spoiler Alert: Florida Man/election denier destined for Biggest Loser of 2024 because documents don't lie.

Best Politician: Andy Beshear (D)... won handily in deep red Kentucky.

Worst Politician: Kevin McCarthy... won self-inflicted Suicidal Speakership on 15th vote by granting (among other things) the power for one member alone to call for a vote to remove him. Duh.

Most Defining Political Moment: The entire saga of Kevin McCarthy's self-inflicted Suicidal Speakership and the Christian nationalist dominionist who replaced him because (his claim, not mine) God repeatedly spoke to him and chose him to be a New Moses.

Turncoat Of The Year: Donald Trump (still and ongoing)

Most Boring: Biden... Joe, Hunter, and Hunter's laptop -- yawn -- but I will vote "boring" over "bombastic bullying bigoted brainless backstabbing and betraying" every day of the week.

Most Charismatic: Rizz... also Oxford's word of the year

Bummest Rap: Vivek Ramaswamy covering Eminem's "Lose Yourself"

Fairest Rap: Trump and his myriad of co-defendants including fake electors... because documents don't lie.

Best Comeback: "Honestly, every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber for what you say." Nikki Haley to Vivek Ramaswamy regarding his use of TikTok. Missed opportunity comeback for Vivek: "So you're admitting you're dumb." ;)

Most Original Thinker: George Santos... not content to lie about being a star athlete on a college volleyball team, also fabricated knee replacements (both knees) as a consequence.

Most Stagnant Thinker: Also George Santos... when questioned about a plethora of manufactured personal history for him and his family claimed it was just "a poor choice of words" and also a "witch hunt."

Best Photo Op: Biden and Zelenskyy walking around in a war zone as air-raid sirens blare

Worst Photo Op: House Speaker votes/infighting... Mike Rogers being physically restrained and muzzled while threatening Matt Gaetz that he (Gaetz) was finished because he wouldn't vote for McCarthy.

Enough Already!: Poor Donald the Perpetually Aggrieved Snowflake... world's biggest whining hot bag of wind; the lies and the grifting never end.

Worst Lie: Trump claiming "election interference" by Joe Biden's campaign when it is actually hundreds of citizens all across America who sit on grand juries and recommend indictments... because a con artist and fraud will lie, but the documents don't lie.

Capitalist Of The Year Elon Musk for incorrectly accusing "blackmail" by those companies that have stopped spending on his social media platform Xitter (pronounced "shitter") in response to ever-increasing antisemitic, pro-Nazi content and white nationalist hate posts. For being a capitalist who doesn't understand capitalism, Musk should take his own advice to "GFY."

Honorable Mention: Beyoncé and Taylor Swift

Person Of The Year Taylor Swift and Beyoncé
