Lying Down With Dogs

[ Posted Thursday, December 1st, 2022 – 16:27 UTC ]

It's a saying that may stretch back to Roman times. In English, the first citation (at least from Wikipedia, I haven't checked the O.E.D. yet, sorry...) dates from 1612: "For they that sleep with dogs, shall rise with fleas." In this particular case, Donald Trump breaking bread with Kanye West and Nick Fuentes has left much of the rest of the Republican Party feeling awfully flea-ridden. And the whole thing just got a lot worse.

Today, "Ye" (as Kanye now wants us all to call him) sat down for an interview with Alex Jones on his "InfoWars" show. Fuentes was there, too. But today Fuentes seems to have been eclipsed for once by Ye's pretty blatant Nazi sympathies. HuffPost has the story:

On Jones' show, Ye said "I see good things about Hitler," and claimed that Nazis "did good things too."

"We got to stop dissing Nazis all the time," Ye said. During the broadcast, he wore a black mask that fully covered his face.

At another point he said: "The Jewish media has made us feel like Nazis and Hitler have never offered us anything of value to the world."

Jones offered little pushback, at one point saying that Ye, who has lost billions in corporate deals amid a spree of antisemitic remarks, was "going through a Jobian trial," a reference to the biblical Book of Job.

Elsewhere, Ye claimed that "woke culture is controlled by the Zionist media," and declared: "I do love Hitler. I do love the Zionists. I love everyone." Jones interjected: "That's a good T-shirt, 'I Love Hitler.' I'm joking."

. . .

In a statement Thursday, the Republican Jewish Coalition called Ye, Fuentes and Jones "messengers of hate."

"Conservatives who have mistakenly indulged Kanye West must make it clear that he is a pariah," the group said. "Enough is Enough."

That's putting it mildly. Ye is in a pariah's tailspin. He is flaming out. The only way he can make the news these days is to top his previous outrageousness. Which, obviously, he just did. These aren't just garden-variety antisemitic remarks, this is praise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, plain and simple.

That a man described as being a "prominent White nationalist" snuck into Trump's dinner with a popular artist who was already a proven anti-Semite was the original scandal. But now they both can accurately be described as Nazi-sympathizers.

That's a lot of fleas.

Because this interview has just happened, so far there has been no reaction in the media from prominent Republicans yet. The dinner happened last week however, and while a few more GOP politicians than usual did actually denounce Trump for dining with these two, most of the party either issued mealymouthed condemnations of antisemitism (without mentioning any names or any specific incident) or just stayed silent and refused to say anything bad about the Dear Leader of their party.

But these fleas are going to continue to bite.

It's not about Ye or Fuentes, either. I fully expect lots of strong Republican denunciations of Ye to be issued within the next 24 hours. It's pretty much a no-brainer for any politician, even today's Republicans: being pro-Hitler or pro-Nazi is absolutely beyond the pale in American politics. Ye was never really a prominent figure in the GOP anyway, he was just a useful idiot who got under the skin of Democrats and liberals. He'll be thrown under the GOP bus without a second thought -- that's my guess, at any rate.

The bigger issue is the fact that there's another dog that needs naming over on the right. Because as is becoming more and more evident, every time the Republican Party lies down with him, they wake up with more pestilent problems which cause them repeated sharp pains.

Donald Trump has the same fleas the Nazi-sympathizers do -- but he's got a whole bunch of other ones to boot. Trump has proven over and over again that he is not only an antisemite, he is also a racist, a misogynist, a bigot, a bully, paranoid, conspiratorially-minded, megalomaniacal, and vengeful. That's a swarm of fleas, and it is beginning to dawn on many Republicans just how harmful all these little bites have been and will continue to be for their party.

Trump hasn't condemned either Ye or Fuentes. After all, he sat down to dinner with them. And as far as Trump is concerned, they passed his one test: loyalty to and fawning adulation of Donald Trump. Trump did reportedly get annoyed at Ye (whose own ego is more planetary-sized than Trump's is, which is quite the feat) when Ye announced he was going to run for president again in 2024 and offered his V.P. slot to Trump. That, of course, sent Trump (who always sees himself as top dog, fleas or not) into a rage. I can even sympathize with Trump on this one -- because that's pretty insulting!

Trump tried the whole "I had no idea who Nick Fuentes was" ploy, and said it was a wonderful dinner and that neither of his guests started spouting anything antisemitic. But he still has yet to condemn either one of them for any of the things they have publicly said, or for their beliefs in general. This is remarkably similar to how all the Republican politicians used to deal with little flea-bitten tweets from Trump: "Oh, sorry, haven't seen that tweet, I have no idea what you're talking about."

But like I said, this time I do expect swift denunciations of Ye's remarks from any Republican within range of a microphone. It's still absolutely impossible for any American politician to say they approve of Nazis, right? One would certainly like to think so....

This is going to increase the pressure on Trump to cut all ties to Ye. Which he is reluctant to do because: (1) Ye is famous, and (2) Ye loves Trump. So it'll be interesting to see what sort of weasel words Trump comes up with to address this recent outrage.

But even after Ye is left on the road far behind the GOP bus, they still won't have fumigated their basic infestation. They're still essentially lying down with a flea-ridden dog over and over again. Sooner or later, those fleas are going to migrate (as they always do), and Republicans will wake up once again desperately scratching.

At this point, that much seems inevitable.

    CW,

Instead of just ignoring Ye's wisdom by calling it racist hate-speech, why isn't anyone asking him to identify, specifically, the "good" he thinks Hitler and the Nazis offered the world? Ye is a fashion genius, so maybe he is thinking of the Nazi's bold use of black leather from head to toe in their SS uniforms. Very Karl Lagerfeld before his time!

Maybe Hitler invented rum raisin ice cream. Hitler did kinda put a stop to the tiny mustache craze... and no one names their kid "Adolf" anymore.

The point is, no one knows what Ye means and we are missing out on having Ye enlighten us with his brilliance by simply dismissing his comments instead of asking him to defend his claims. I'm guessing that Ye doesn't actually know of anything good that Hitler did and just believes that it makes him sound more open-minded than others to make such claims.

Artists can be weird that bc way, but it makes zero sense to stick them in politics, where words have some very precise meanings.

Trolling has become mighty expensive. This troll is really testing that "no publicity is bad publicity" strategy. He's lit mega-millions on fire even before buying a social media site (that he can no longer afford).

It doesn't seem like a very good general election strategy, but if you want the GQP nomination for president, it makes some sense to hang out with Nazis like The Donald and Nick Fuentes. I don't believe that Ye will ever be president, but after he completely destroys his musical career, maybe he can be Ted Nugent.

Yeah, Democrats are allowed to have different opinions and don't have to consult a cult leader to determine what it is that they believe. Republicans are forced to consult Trump to determine what it is that you believe... kinda like consulting a giant orange Magic 8ball... just shake his belly and he spits out a response -- usually about how he is such a victim. Basically, because none of the bullshit you posted addressed any of the facts that CW had correctly written about Hair Dick Tater Trump.

All your prattling nonsense qualifies as nothing more than your typical deflection attempting in vain to divert from the subject matter that was actually:

Trump has proven over and over again that he is not only an antisemite, he is also a racist, a misogynist, a bigot, a bully, paranoid, conspiratorially-minded, megalomaniacal, and vengeful.
