"Russia, Russia, Russia" Investigation Ends With A Whimper

[ Posted Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 – 15:39 UTC ]

The left had the Mueller investigation. In response, in 2019 Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr launched a counter-investigation, led by Special Counsel John Durham, which was theoretically supposed to prove that the F.B.I. (and the entire "Deep State" working within the federal government to bring Trump down) had committed heinous crimes that were entirely political in nature. This was, according to Trump, all going to expose "the crime of the century." In August, Trump was still hopeful, sending out the message on social media: "The public is waiting 'with bated breath' for the Durham Report, which should reveal corruption at a level never seen before in our country." Here's a spoiler alert for Trump: It won't.

Reportedly, Durham dutifully looked into all the myriad zany conspiracy theories emanating from Team Trump. None of them panned out, which is pretty much par for the course when serious investigative agencies delve into the swamp of right-wing conspiracy theories. To date, the record for the Durham investigation is: two people prosecuted for the crime of lying to the F.B.I., with one other plea deal for the same charge that did not involve any prison time. Both court cases resulted in "not guilty" findings, including the one that just ended today. So Durham is 1-for-3, but only on minor charges. No major charges have been filed at all, nor will they be filed. No "crime of the century" was uncovered -- far from it. The F.B.I. had plenty of very valid reasons to investigate the Trump campaign's ties to Russia, and none of it was any sort of personal or political vendetta against Donald Trump. They were just doing their job. Period.

The case that ended today shows how embarrassing the entire exercise was, for Durham. Two of the F.B.I. agents who were supposed to be testifying for the prosecution actually exonerated the defendant. The judge threw out that charge against him before the case even went to the jury. And the jury decided the defendant was innocent of the other four charges as well -- just as the previous jury had exonerated Durham's other defendant. Both were very weak cases (obviously), from the very beginning.

Durham called two grand juries in his investigation. One is now inactive. The other one hasn't leaked, one way or the other. But nobody expects more charges to appear, and Durham will likely wrap things up and issue his report sometime around the end of this year. It will then be up to the sitting attorney general to decide how much (if any) of this report is released to the public.

The whole thing is going to be a gigantic fizzle, in other words. A dud. A non-starter. Which is amusing, since the entire exercise was so blatantly political from the start. Bill Barr may now try to paint himself as some sort of high-minded man of principle and ethical rectitude, but his tenure didn't start just after the 2020 election -- he spent a lot of time before that cheerfully doing Trump's bidding at the Justice Department. Launching the Durham investigation was part and parcel of how the department had been heavily politicized under Trump and his mostly-sycophantic attorneys general. Which is ironic, since that's what they were trying to prove in the other direction -- that the Justice Department had previously been politicized against Trump. As usual, Republicans complain loudest about things that they are actually guilty of doing themselves.

The other irony in all of this will be the disappointment and disbelief from the right, when Durham's report (or a redacted version) is released to the public. Remember liberals waiting for "Muellermas," and their enormous collective disappointment when it finally came to pass? That's what the world of MAGA is about to go through.

It was all supposed to be so grand and sweeping. The "Steele Dossier" was going to be exposed, the F.B.I. were going to be revealed as the dastardly villains they truly were, and iron-clad proof would be presented that the whole thing was orchestrated by Hillary Clinton (or perhaps Barack Obama, or some conspiracy between the two) for nefarious partisan reasons. "Russia, Russia, Russia" (as Trump has long called the investigation into his 2016 campaign) was all going to be proven to be the biggest "hoax" of all time. The Deep State was going to be exposed, once and for all. America would recoil in horror at the corrupt and criminal skullduggery that Democrats were capable of. Trump would be exonerated as being an absolute saint; merely an innocent victim of a grand plot against him. Perhaps the country would be so mortified at the wrongdoing that they'd just (somehow) hand the presidency back to Trump and usher Joe Biden out of the White House. Anything was possible -- we're talking the "crime of the century," after all!

None of that is going to happen. The "Russia, Russia, Russia" investigation will end with a whimper, not a bang.

Here is the Durham investigation's real epitaph, from today's New York Times:

Igor Danchenko, an analyst who provided much of the research in a notorious dossier of unproven assertions and rumors about former President Donald J. Trump and Russia, was acquitted on Tuesday on four counts of lying to the F.B.I. about one of his sources.

The verdict was another stinging defeat for the special counsel, John H. Durham, who was appointed by Attorney General William P. Barr three years ago to investigate the F.B.I.'s investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia.

Mr. Trump and his supporters have long insisted the inquiry would prove a "deep state" conspiracy against him, but after pursuing various baseless theories, Mr. Durham never found and charged one. Instead he developed two narrow cases accusing people involved in outside efforts to scrutinize purported links between Mr. Trump and Russia of making false statements.

The first of those cases ended in an acquittal of the defendant, Michael Sussmann, a cybersecurity lawyer with Democratic connections. The trial against Mr. Danchenko is expected to be the last of Mr. Durham's prosecutions, and the special counsel is expected to submit a final report to the Justice Department this year summarizing his findings.

Biden allowed this joke of an investigation to continue to allow it to find what everyone knew it would find…that those investigating Trump were justified in doing so based on the evidence. There was no plot to get Trump using falsified evidence. Republicans have learned that they only need to repeat something over and over to make their base believe their lies…and this has become one of their most used propaganda tools on a daily basis. But there was never any real evidence to make their lies magically turn true…which is why Democrats had nothing to fear from allowing this to fully play out.

This is vastly different from how Republicans feel about allowing investigations to be completed on any allegations of wrong doing by Trump. Trump had Rod Rosenstein quietly kill the counterintelligence investigation into his relationships with foreign governments. Guess Trump had something to hide. Big shock!

As we've discussed multiple times on the forum before, the righties can spin this to their gullible MAGA cult rubes however they wish, but the FBI had already opened an investigation into Trump (for multiple other catalysts) when the so-called "Steele dossier" was turned over to Jim Comey by John McCain. We know this for a fact because McCain admitted it; we also know that he talked with Lindsey Graham about the dossier who urged McCain to do so. Not surprisingly, the president was livid that the dossier had been turned over to the FBI. He was also not surprisingly irate that someone had leaked the dossier to the press, and Graham subsequently explained it wasn't McCain who turned it over to the press:

I told the President it was not John McCain. I know because John McCain showed me the dossier. And I told him the only thing I knew to do with it, it could be a bunch of garbage, it could be true, who knows? Turn it over to somebody who's job it is to find these things out and John McCain acted appropriately.

~ Lindsey Graham, March 25, 2019 press conference

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/25/politics/lindsey-graham-john-mccain-dossier-fbi/index.html

Fast forward, and surprise (not) surprise, attempts by Trump and Bill Barr to somehow spin the entire issue as a "Democrat" or "Deep State" hit job have failed in spectacular fashion. It was opposition research added to the evidence pile of the investigation already underway, some of which research was verified by the FBI as accurate (mostly meetings with Russians), some research unable to be verified and some determined to be Russian dezinformatsia (disinformation), but none of which caused the FBI to begin an investigation of Trump when McCain delivered it to Comey. See Mueller report.

As for Danchenko, he had been a paid informant for the FBI since 2017, but true to form, Trump's weaponized DOJ under Barr continued to put Trump's interests over those of the country, which Barr finally drew the line at lying about Trump's election loss, but not before Barr interfered in the DOJ's sentencing of Roger Stone and interfered in the DOJ's prosecution of Michael Flynn (who actually pled guilty to lying to the FBI because Flynn actually did lie repeatedly to the FBI), and Barr burned Danchenko as a source in October 2020 by turning over information to _____________ <--- "guess who" (I'll give you one guess), Lindsey Graham, who then promptly went public with it and began demanding an investigation into the origins of the dossier that he himself had urged John McCain to turn over to the FBI.

Fast forward to Danchenko's trial where his lawyers cross-examined Durham's witnesses; however, Danchenko did not take the stand in his own defense and the defense called exactly zero witnesses. The jury deliberated for nine (whole) hours, and Danchenko was acquitted on all counts of lying to the FBI, which was somewhat of a "small victory" *shakes head* for Durham since the jury in Durham's previous bullshit trial against Michael Sussmann had deliberated for a whopping whole six hours before quickly returning his acquittal.

Russ is correct. Why hinder a Durham investigation that was a right-wing Trumpian bullshit propaganda exercise from the jump? The Trump cult is so gullible they'll believe anything anyway... facts be damned.

However, Durham and his aides used the forum of the recent trials to air evidence of what they suggested was a failure by FBI personnel to pursue leads as they probed the sourcing of the Steele dossier, a compendium of allegations former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele assembled about links between Trump and Russia. Danchenko was Steele’s key source when compiling the dossier.

Durham’s open criticism of the FBI produced an unusual spectacle at the trial, as he and his team attacked the competence of FBI agents and analysts who were the prosecution’s key witnesses. The back-and-forth led to disclosures about senior investigators’ refusal to pursue inquiries that more junior FBI personnel thought were warranted, as well as ongoing efforts to discipline FBI personnel over issues related to the Trump-Russia investigation.

Republican Mehmet Oz has narrowed Democrat John Fetterman’s lead in Pennsylvania’s bare-knuckle Senate election, and the two candidates are now polling inside the margin of error, according to a new survey shared exclusively with POLITICO.

Fetterman is slightly ahead with 48 percent of likely voters, while Oz has 46 percent, the poll by AARP found. That’s a shift in Oz’s direction since June, when Fetterman, the state’s lieutenant governor, was leading by six percentage points in the AARP survey.

In recent months, Fetterman has come under heavy negative advertising by Oz and his allies, who have accused him of being soft on crime.

Fetterman’s image has sunk since June, though it is still right side up by a hair. Forty-six percent of likely voters view him favorably, compared with 45 percent who see him unfavorably. In June, the same number of voters looked at him favorably, but only 36 percent perceived him unfavorably.

Republican Midterm Prospects Brighten in Closing Weeks of Election

Renewed focus on the economy has stalled Democrats’ momentum in key contests, analysts say

WASHINGTON—Infusions of ad spending for GOP candidates and persistent voter anxiety over high inflation have brought new momentum to the Republican Party in House and Senate races, analysts say, just as early voting has begun for the midterm elections in many states.

A Democratic lead of about 2 percentage points on the generic ballot—the question of whether voters plan to back a Democrat or Republican for Congress—has been cut by more than half since late September, the FiveThirtyEight average of polling results finds. Democratic leads in many Senate races have declined, according to aggregated polls, and Democratic candidates now trail in surveys in Wisconsin and Nevada, where they were once ahead. Control of both chambers hangs in the balance.

A surge of good news for Democrats in the summer and early fall, as well as a burst of Democratic engagement in the election after the Supreme Court ended federal abortion rights in June, appears to have given way to the factors that traditionally weigh on the president’s party in a midterm election, as many voters tend to sour on the party in power and those backing the party that lost the White House are most eager to vote again.

The bottom line, analysts from both parties say, is Republicans are increasingly likely to gain well over the net five seats needed to retake the majority in the House, which they lost in 2018, while control of the 50-50 Senate could still fall to either party.

“Throughout the summer, there had been quite a few advantages for Democrats, with the dramatic intervention of the abortion decision. It energized younger voters, women and Democrats,” said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. Now, she said, “you do see some settling down into traditional patterns of off-year elections.”

“Dobbs changed the election and put Democrats back into contention—that’s true,” said Republican pollster Bill McInturff, referring to the high court’s abortion ruling. But about 70% of voters say the country is headed in the wrong direction, he added.

Even as many voters remained concerned about abortion, President Biden is drawing low job-approval ratings, and worries about inflation and the economy remain high.

“There has never been a time when an incumbent party is going to thrive with that set of factors,” Mr. McInturff said.

Since World War II, the president’s party has lost House seats in every midterm election except two, and presidents with low approval ratings fare the worst. In midterms from 1962 through 2018, presidents with job-approval ratings under 50% have lost 39 House seats on average, Mr. McInturff finds, using Gallup data that excludes the Watergate year of 1974. Mr. Biden’s approval rating has been in the low- to mid-40% range in aggregated polls.

Democrats faced a difficult environment heading into this year’s midterms. The party’s legislative priorities in Congress had stalled, and substantially more Democrats in vulnerable House races than Republicans chose not to seek re-election, a factor that usually helps challengers.

New polls show voters favor Republicans in the midterm elections, despite Democrats' slight edge in September

In September, some commentators were confident Democrats might be able to avoid a "red wave," but with just three weeks to midterm election day, momentum from the overturning of Roe v. Wade and President Biden’s string of summer legislative wins could be waning.

Polling for the 2022 generic congressional vote — a closely watched indicator for midterm performance — shows Democrats’ average advantage over Republicans peaking in mid-September with a 1.3 percent lead, a decent advantage given that Biden’s approval rating consistently hovered in the low 40s.

However, three weeks away from the midterms, Republicans have managed to gain back momentum that they have not seen in months, leading by 2.2% on average when voters are asked which party they would support, according to RealClearPolitics.

Two open-seat races, one near Orlando and the other on the fast-growing Gulf Coast, once seen as potentially competitive, have faded from the battleground. Republicans’ top super PAC, Congressional Leadership Fund, had booked airtime to win the state’s new House seat, the 15th District, but canceled that this week as GOP nominee Laurel Lee has a commanding lead.

The GOP is playing offense on abortion — and they’re winning

When the Supreme Court issued its final opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on June 24, 2022, political analysts everywhere predicted Republicans were doomed in November. Despite record-high inflation, rising gas prices and skyrocketing crime, abortion — they said — would be a leading issue for voters and turn what should have been a red wave into an opportunity for Democrats. Hopes of a Republican majority were gone.

Over the summer, leftist groups spent millions hammering Republican candidates over the issue. Advertisements on television and on digital platforms accused the GOP of being “extreme” on the issue, warning of new abortion restrictions if Republicans are elected to a majority in the U.S. House and Senate. For a short period of time, the abortion attacks appeared to be working and showed up in polling as favorable to Democrats. At the time, most Republican candidates were ignoring the issue, hoping it would simply go away.

But in the final months and weeks leading up to Election Day, Republicans have gone on the offensive by refusing to accept the label of extreme on the issue. They’ve been able to turn the argument around and expose that it isn’t Republicans who are extreme on abortion, but rather the Democrats.

Nov. 8 is past the Democrats’ sell-by date

As midterm congressional elections arrive, there’s new force to the old saw about facts, the law, and banging the table. Like a desperate attorney thumping furniture because the facts and the law undermine his argument, President Joe Biden’s Democrats are forced to make a lot of empty noise because empirical evidence and voter sentiment cut against them.

Red signals of imminent Democratic defeat are flashing everywhere.

In this week’s New York Times/Sienna College poll, 49% of likely voters — the most important category — said they’d vote Republican, compared to 45% choosing Democrats. That is a small lead but a solid one and, notably, a 5-point swing to the GOP in just a month.

The tide has turned since it inched in Biden’s direction over the summer, and it may be picking up the pace against his party — which is to be expected. As Election Day becomes less of a hazy prospect over the horizon and more an imminent date on the calendar, voters avoid being misdirected by extraneous issues and distracting noises from the party that has nothing good to say on the subject everyone cares about.

Gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams (D) and a variety of other Peach State Democrats got their entire national party worked up over Georgia's new voting law last year. They framed the state's new post-COVID voting reforms as a problem so large and so grave that they called for a boycott of their own state. They invoked lynchings and slavery. And their campaign of intimidation was not just based on faulty predictions — it was based on multiple knowingly false claims.

Democratic activists went to great lengths to plant stories in the media, which lazy journalists dutifully filed, claiming that Georgia's new voting law was a new attempt to suppress the black vote.

These Democrats, ranging from local activists all the way up to Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and President Joe Biden, made multiple demonstrably false claims about the content of the law, even though its text was available online the entire time.

Of course, since abortions are outlawed, your comment that it is "so desperately needed" makes even less sense. Gotta force them births!

Why bother passing any laws to combat inflation???

According to Stacey BIG LIE Abrams, the best way to combat inflation is to kill one's children..

So, the solution to inflation is clear???

    Kill your children! :eyeroll:

Demonrats.. I tell ya, they get more perverse and more disgusting every day...

Here is how Demonrats do it...

As a birth takes place, when the baby is crowning, the top of the head appearing, the very moment of birth, the attending physician or nurse would take a syringe loaded with formaldehyde, and stab it into the soft spot at the crown of the almost-newborn's head, push the plunger, and extinguish its life at the moment of its beginning.

Yea... Demonrats are GREAT people, eh?? :eyeroll:

How did you "establish" his "bona fides as a retired LEO", exactly? Did you give in to his constant begging to believe his lies? Just curious how one establishes that he was a retired LEO when Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement has no record of him being an officer nor does The Municipal Police Officers and Firefighters' Retirement Trust Funds Office, housed within the Division of Retirement have record of his pulling a pension from them. And based on public records stating where he has resided for the last 30+ years, the only state he has lived in long enough to pull a pension as a former law enforcement officer would be Florida. So again, what "bona fides" did you establish for KKK?

It truly is amazing how much info you can learn about a person dumb enough to tell the world who they are and where they can be found! And you would have to believe that even a person that dumb would still be smart enough NOT to go and lie about a career in law enforcement which could easily be checked for accuracy from multiple government agencies' databases in a matter of hours, right???

Michael's "police work" consists of him not following procedures by waiting on backup before entering a DV which resulted in him killing the wife of a fellow soldier. And he says you were a threat to fellow soldiers for smoking pot?

How does this law do anymore to prevent the Republican from raping the underage girl than the other one does? This law carries no penalties for the teacher's actions whatsoever. Your context is still meaningless other than your desire to slurp DeSatan's balls. Did you think the law would cause the teacher to first check with the parent to see if it was cool to discuss railing their daughter? Pitiful!

Texas school districts have begun distribution of DNA kits to parents mandating they be made available after GOP Governor Greg Abbott signed a law last year. The availability of the kits comes in the wake of the horrific mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, where 19 students and two teachers were slaughtered earlier this year in May.
“The state Legislature passed a law in spring 2021 requiring the Texas Education Agency to give inkless in-home fingerprint and DNA identification cards to each public school system in Texas,” The Houston Chronicle reports. “The kits will be made available at each primary-level campus. The cards are intended to be kept by guardians who can give them to law enforcement in order to potentially help find missing or trafficked children.”

The kits are available to any parent or guardian who requests them. They can be used to identify the bodies of their children in the event of another school mass shooting, or other event where it is difficult to ID a child.

Brandi Smith, an Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter at KHOU responded to the news, saying on social media that a “follower forwarded me the email about the DNA kits he received from Clear Creek ISD last week. He identified himself as retired Army and added these kits were used prior to soldiers deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan. Let that sink in.”

Gun violence prevention activist Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, blasted the move.

“Texas Gov Greg Abbott is choosing to send DNA kits to schools that parents can use to identify their children’s bodies AFTER they’ve been murdered rather than pass gun safety laws to proactively protect their lives,” she wrote, urging Texans to vote for Democrat Beto O’Rourke in the gubernatorial race.

Screw trying to prevent their deaths... just have these DNA kits handy when they call about your kid being so mutilated by bullets that they cannot ID him. Republicans... forcing births so gun nuts can have someone to mow down in a few years.

Hell, it must have sucked to have been a former MP, a military vet, and then to pay your own way to go to a police academy (all of which would typically make you a much more attractive candidate for hiring with most departments) and still no one would hire you. Granted, seeing how dishonest you are on here, it was definitely for the best that no one hired you! No chance in HELL you were gonna pass those psych exams! That had to be sooo humiliating! Majorly humiliating!

Damn it, now you went and actually made me pity you a little... OK, just had to remember what a nasty POS you truly are to get past that!

Remember also his "police work" (archived on this very forum) when he describes how he arrested a girl and her friends for prostitution? The "police officer" married one of the girls but not before he'd raped her.

Of course, he doesn't exactly tell us in that one comment box that he was a "police officer" who raped a young girl that he'd arrested, but he explains in later comment boxes that he'd had sex with his underage wife before they married. In his usual state of total cluelessness and perpetual inability to connect one dot to another, it appears he explained to the entire world and archived herein that he was a "police officer" who went on to marry a girl he arrested for prostitution but not before he'd raped her.

    Simple dot connecting.

    Anyways, back on topic

    The goal here wasn't Dachenko...

Durham is playing x-dimensional chess while Demonrats are stuck at tiddly winks

There's a name for that: Malicious prosecution; if, as is claimed, "the goal here wasn't Danchenko," then special counsel Durham is guilty of "malicious prosecution."

I reiterate: Danchenko's lawyers didn't call a single witness. They simply cross-examined Durham's witnesses whose testimony actually helped Danchenko and forced Durham to attack the very people that he put on the witness stand.

The defense needed to call zero witnesses in order to prove what was obvious: Durham cherry-picked facts, bullied witnesses, and attempted to concoct an anti-Trump conspiracy where none existed.

The vast majority of federal defendants that receive a jury trial are found guilty, approximately around 85% (give or take), so Durham's chances of losing back-to-back cases were infinitesimally small, yet here we are because there's quite obviously no "there" there.

The goal here is to prosecute top FBI so-called "leaders" who, under color of authority, used their positions to persecute and illegally investigate the President Of The United States..

    Oh, I see. *laughs*

Well, that will be quite a trick if Durham manages to prove that since the investigation obviously had already begun months before Trump was sworn in and Trump was most definitely a private citizen. In fact, have I mentioned lately it was actually Lindsey Graham who urged John McCain to turn over the dossier to have it investigated, and McCain did so the following day on December 9, 2016, when Trump was (still) definitely a private citizen and (still) not the POTUS and when Trump and other members of Trump's campaign had actually already been under investigation for multiple months?

Once THOSE America Hating scumbags are prosecuted they will, in turn, flip on the Demonrat so-called "leaders" who ordered this illegal persecution...

Are you implying that it's James Comey (R) who will be prosecuted for illegally investigating citizen (not president) Trump and the multiple other citizens and politicians who were under investigation? Do you think the Democrat who "ordered" this so-called illegal investigation of Comey (R) was Obama? Do you think Obama put Lindsey Graham (R) up to convincing John McCain (R) to turn over the dossier to Comey (R)? Have you confused a whole bunch of Republicans with Democrats? Do you think it's illegal for investigators to investigate? Do you think maybe they'll prosecute John McCain (R) posthumously for turning the dossier over to Comey (R) or maybe Graham (R) for urging him to do so? These are obviously multiple rhetorical questions not requiring an answer.

The absolute bullshit right-wing Q-Anon-level of ridiculous dumbshittery that's been spoon-fed to the gullible moronic Trump cult regarding this Durham nothingburger is hysterical to watch. Durham had his multiple days in multiple courts and has been unable to prove the Trump con he calls "Russia Hoax." It's very similar to the Trump con we call the "Big Lie" wherein multiple lawyers for Trump had their day in 60+ courts and were unable to prove that Trump con and where multiple of the morons who fell for that con are being prosecuted for violence and ignorance and going to prison. Ignorance is not always bliss.

You see the pattern here? Trump is a blowhard grifting con artist, and gullible people buy into it despite all facts in evidence to the contrary. Some of them are in prison for their ignorance, and some of them are just trolling assholes with their ignorance and gullibility on full display.
