The Republican Party's Three Options

[ Posted Thursday, October 17th, 2013 – 17:14 UTC ]

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The Way Of The Whig Party

[ Posted Monday, October 14th, 2013 – 17:28 UTC ]

Will Republicans go the way of the Whig Party? Well, we're not really going to answer that question in any meaningful way today, we're going to instead focus on the question itself. Because this question isn't really all that apt a parallel to draw in the first place. Most people today just use "go the way of the Whig Party" as an amusing way to say "disappear as a national political party." But a truer parallel to history would be to ask the question: "Will today's Republicans revert back to being the Whig Party?" Or, perhaps: "Will the Tea Party eventually go the way of the Whig Party?"

Friday Talking Points [276] -- Shutdown Follies

[ Posted Friday, October 4th, 2013 – 17:57 UTC ]

Well, I have to admit -- I never thought John Boehner was stupid enough to shut the government down over Obamacare. Shows what I know, right? Sigh.

What Reid, Pelosi, And Obama Should Say Now

[ Posted Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013 – 17:00 UTC ]

Now is a critical time for America on the budget showdown, of course. But behind the real effects of the shutdown on the American public is the political arguing. While the entire news media waits for the first public opinion polls to come out on the shutdown (and the question they consider crucial: "Who should be blamed?"), Democrats have got to press the issue hard, and offer up some solid pushback on current Republican talking points. Below are the comments I would dearly love to hear from either House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, President Barack Obama, or some combination of the three. Ideally, it'd be issued as a letter, signed by all of them. Short of that, here are the points all Democrats interviewed in the media could be making right now, to great effect. Because if this thing is not resolved in the next day or so, it's going to erupt into a much bigger and more-drawn-out fight. And Democrats need to be ready for it.

Friday Talking Points [275] -- Ted Cruz: Senator Ham-I-Am

[ Posted Friday, September 27th, 2013 – 18:10 UTC ]

No, the big point missed in the midst of Senator Ted Cruz's talkfest was the moral of the story he read. By now, most people have heard that Cruz read, in its entirety, the classic Dr. Seuss children's book Green Eggs And Ham -- tucking his own kids into bed, long-distance, via C-SPAN. Cruz then doubled down on his point-missing by comparing Obamacare to the story's green eggs and ham. Cruz really has no excuse for this monumentally idiotic mistake, since (as mentioned) he read the whole story from the Senate floor.

Obama Poll Watch -- August, 2013

[ Posted Thursday, September 5th, 2013 – 16:00 UTC ]

For President Obama, August is the cruelest month. Every year, without fail, Obama slumps in the polls in the dog days of summer. This year was no different. That's the bad news, for Obama fans. The worse news is that there isn't a whole lot on the immediate horizon which could give Obama any sort of bump upwards in his polling numbers. But before we get to the future, let's take a look at the past month.

Congress' Labor Daze

[ Posted Monday, September 2nd, 2013 – 15:39 UTC ]

Congress -- even in a good year -- barely works. That can be taken (equally correctly) either as "barely functions" or "barely ever shows up for work." In a pathetically-unproductive year (this Congress is on track to be the least productive Congress since records were kept), this should already have become painfully obvious to all.

Friday Talking Points [270] -- The Dog That Didn't Bark, And Herding Stupid Insane Cats

[ Posted Friday, August 23rd, 2013 – 17:19 UTC ]

"Boehner's trouble isn't even that he's trying to herd cats -- it's that he's trying to herd stupid insane cats."

Natural Born Presidents (Part 1)

[ Posted Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 – 17:18 UTC ]

The problem, obviously, is that nobody's ever adequately legally defined what exactly "a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States" means. There have been no court challenges. It has become a political issue at times, but has never been adjudicated at all -- which means it is completely open to interpretation, for now. By anyone, really.
