Friday Talking Points [268] -- PBS, Citizen Koch, And Obama's Press Conference

[ Posted Friday, August 9th, 2013 – 16:15 UTC ]

The big political news today, of course, was President Obama's press conference. While the subject matter largely revolved around the National Security Agency reforms Obama is belatedly proposing, I found the rest of the presser to be more interesting, personally -- mostly because the excerpt we're going to provide will in all likelihood be virtually ignored in most media reports. But we'll get to all that in the remainder of the column.

Holder To Announce New Drug Policy?

[ Posted Thursday, August 8th, 2013 – 17:25 UTC ]

Attorney General Eric Holder seems to be signaling that he'll soon be announcing major changes in the federal government's policies on illegal drugs. If this turns out to be true, it will indeed be a welcome change in the approach the Justice Department has taken under President Barack Obama. Obama is now the third president to have admitted smoking marijuana before he entered office (well, OK, the second one who admitted inhaling, technically, but still...), so any changes are indeed long overdue.

There's A-Gonna Be A Shootout (In The Obamacare Corral)!

[ Posted Wednesday, August 7th, 2013 – 17:48 UTC ]

The Republican Party is busily choosing sides in an upcoming fight. Now, in normal times that sentence would be parsed as: the Republican Party -- as a whole -- was choosing their strategy in a looming battle with Democrats. These days, due to the ever-more-visible deep divisions within the party itself, Republicans are instead choosing which side to take in an upcoming battle with itself. Which makes the entire exercise enjoyable for Democrats, who have a number of options of their own. But we'll get to that in a moment.

Friday Talking Points [267] -- Congress Slinks Out Of Town

[ Posted Friday, August 2nd, 2013 – 17:36 UTC ]

It was a busy week in Washington, since all the congresscritters were eager to get out of town for their not-so-well-earned five weeks of vacation. It'll take awhile for the dust to settle, so let's take a look at some of what's been happening while it does.

Obama's New August Strategy

[ Posted Monday, July 29th, 2013 – 16:48 UTC ]

President Obama, for the first time in memory, is not going to ignore August. Augusts haven't been kind to Obama in the past. But this time around it appears he's going to proactively go on the offensive for the month, rather than sitting on the sidelines during what is now known as "town hall season." How successful he will be in this effort remains to be seen, but it is at least refreshing to see him make the attempt.

Marijuana News Update

[ Posted Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 – 17:03 UTC ]

Marijuana seems to be all over the news today, so I thought I'd just give a quick rundown of the recent developments, with a little call to action at the end.

Friday Talking Points [265] -- Harry Reid Has A Good Week, Mitch McConnell Does Not

[ Posted Friday, July 19th, 2013 – 16:13 UTC ]

As usual this week, there were several stories the mainstream media was obsessing over which I am just largely going to ignore. The most inane of these was, of course: "This just in! It gets hot in the summer! Who knew?!?" The most ridiculous one was the foofaroo over Rolling Stone using a photograph on its cover which many other media outlets had used for front-page stuff, but which somehow Rolling Stone wasn't supposed to use, for some inexplicable reason. Even though -- on the same cover -- they called the guy "a monster." Lots of out-of-context outrage ensued, including one call to buy the magazine and then burn it. Um, yeah, that'll show them! Just hand over your money, in protest!

Republicans' Anti-Obamacare 2014 Strategy

[ Posted Wednesday, July 17th, 2013 – 16:40 UTC ]

But what if it works reasonably well? What if (gasp!) people actually like it?

Friday Talking Points [262] -- War On Women Continues Apace

[ Posted Friday, June 14th, 2013 – 16:37 UTC ]

Last week, Republicans seem to have decided that the whole "autopsy" business after they got beaten so badly in the 2012 elections was just hogwash, and that they should double-down on their demonization and scapegoatery efforts. The "Plum Line" blog over at WashingtonPost.com has a good rundown (although now that the site is disappearing behind a paywall, I may have to reconsider linking to its articles in the future).

Friday Talking Points [261] -- Rest In Peace, Fourth Amendment

[ Posted Friday, June 7th, 2013 – 16:33 UTC ]

Every so often as I sit down to write these Friday columns, the spirit of the rant overtakes me. Instead of our usual Talking Points section this week, I offer up such a rant, on the death of the Fourth Amendment. You have all been warned. I did consider calling this rant an "Ode To Dianne Feinstein," but then I thought that was too limiting -- she certainly isn't the only one out there singing from the same hymnbook. And I certainly wouldn't want to have anyone feel left out.
