Trump Humiliated By Georgia Voters

[ Posted Wednesday, May 25th, 2022 – 15:37 UTC ]

There's an old adage that says success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. Last night's election results in Georgia, however, did indeed have a single clear father, and his name is Donald Trump. Not that he'll admit this fact, even with the proof of a paternity test. But perhaps I'm stretching the metaphor a bit too far, so let's begin again, shall we?

After Georgia's primary, many are today proclaiming that Trump is now a paper tiger within the Republican Party and that it is safe for candidates to buck both him and his toxic Big Lie that the last election was somehow stolen from him (spoiler alert: it wasn't). This may be overstating the case, but it is undeniable that Trumpism suffered a big and humiliating body blow last night.

Trump had a singular focus on Georgia, where he hand-picked candidates for: U.S. senator, governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, and (why not?) insurance commissioner. Only two out of Trump's six candidates won their GOP primaries (for senator and lieutenant governor), but the big embarrassment was that the ones Trump really wanted to win lost -- badly. They got absolutely spanked, in fact.

Trump's major targets were Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger -- the two officials who absolutely refused to "find 11,780 votes" for Trump and thus steal the election for him. Trump personally recruited David Perdue to run against Kemp, campaigned for him in the state, and -- something he hasn't done for any of his other endorsed candidates -- actually sank more than two million of his own PAC dollars into the race. Kemp beat Perdue by over 50 points (73 percent to 22 percent), which is a truly pathetic showing for a Trump-blessed candidate. Trump's pick for secretary of state, Jody Hice, did a bit better than Perdue, but still got beat 52 percent to 33 percent -- a margin that will allow Raffensperger to avoid having to win again in a runoff election. Attorney General Chris Carr also badly beat his Trump-backed challenger and skated to the nomination with a huge margin of victory.

Trump hasn't been doing so well with his picks for governor, as this is now the third one who has failed to carry the day in the primary election (the other two happened in Idaho and Nebraska). Perhaps this is a function of state-level officials having their own solid base of voter support within their own states, and/or them being able to lock up the local field of big GOP donors. Trump has one big victory in this category (in Pennsylvania), so this isn't universally true. But Trump has had more success with picking Senate candidates, and his pick (Herschel Walker) skated to victory last night in the Peach State.

What was truly notable about the Georgia races, however, was how heavily centered most of them were around Trump's Big Lie. Trump has been on what's been called a "vendetta tour," where the measure of his dislike for his fellow Republicans is based solely on their perceived disloyalty to Trump and to Trump's goal of overturning the 2020 presidential vote. Kemp and Raffensperger were two of the most prominent officials who stopped Trump's plans for a coup in its tracks back then, therefore they earned more of his rage than other officials elsewhere. Perdue's campaign was reportedly completely built around touting the Big Lie and all but promising that that he would do whatever Trump wanted him to in 2024 -- he essentially ran a one-issue campaign on it.

Georgia Republican voters were not impressed, obviously. They chose the men who stood up to Trump instead of knuckling under. That's an impressive vindication for standing up for democracy and fealty to the United States Constitution. And it is also impressive because Trump was so invested in these races -- out of all the primary contests this year, these were both very high on Trump's list of people he wanted to politically destroy.

And he lost both races -- badly. This shows other Republican candidates that even if Trump loathes you, this doesn't automatically equate to losing your election. So it'll be interesting to see in the coming weeks if any of the other Republicans who have enraged Trump in some way or another begin to feel a little freer to actually stand up against Trump, against the Big Lie, and against Trumpism itself.

But no matter what Trump's win/loss record turns out to be when the primary season dust settles, the true test of the Big Lie being a political liability won't come until November. Trump, as is his wont, doesn't care one whit about how qualified a candidate is or how electable he or she might be. All Trump cares about is subservience to Trump, period. This has led him to endorse some very sketchy candidates -- some of whom have already won their primaries. But a Republican primary win doesn't automatically equate to a general election win everywhere (although, to be fair, it really does if the state is red enough). So the big test will be whether Trump's picks wind up costing the Republican Party some Senate seats that they otherwise could have won.

Right now, Trump's got a few of his heavily-backed Senate candidates who have won their nominations -- in Ohio, now Georgia, and possibly in Pennsylvania (pending a recount). All three are flawed, however, with plenty of built-in weaknesses that the Democrats running against them will feel no compunction about exploiting. Trump's biggest win in the governor's category (in Pennsylvania) might also be vulnerable for exactly the same reason.

So what lesson will the Republican Party learn if Trump romps to victory in the primaries -- only to lose races in November that could have been a lot more winnable with a more-conventional candidate? If Trump is seen as the sole reason Republicans fail to take control of the Senate, this is going to create a lot of resentment and bad feelings within the party. Trump loves television personalities and sports stars and true believers, but if the voters reject these choices (some of whom have an incredible amount of baggage) then perhaps the party will rethink the strategy of nominating such candidates in the first place.

We're not at that point yet. Right now, there are only grumblings -- mostly grumbled behind closed doors within the Republican caucus. This isn't the first time the party has faced losing easily-winnable seats because of disastrous choices made by the voters in the primaries, after all.

Right now the only thing that is abundantly clear is that the Trump brand was badly tarnished last night. Even Republicans who have earned the full-on wrath of Trump can overcome his vindictiveness and fury and still convince their voters to side with them (and not Trump and his Big Lie). Trump is not quite a paper tiger -- not yet -- but it is impossible to conclude anything other than that last night was a gigantic humiliation for him.

Herschel Walker's candidacy may not be hurt too much by his false claim that he graduated from the University of Georgia--voters have gotten all too accustomed to an inflated personal resume. But at least some voters may wonder what planet he's on saying that Trump never claimed the election was stolen from him. Trump's base apparently likes to be told "Believe me and not your lying eyes and ears," but I'm hopeful that there are other voters who don't like to have their intelligence--and in fact their sanity--insulted like that.

Sadly, Herschel took many a cranial blow running for all that yardage…enough to make someone who started out like Stephen Hawking end up seeming more like Stephen Dorff! Except with Herschel, saying he started out like Dorff would be considered very charitable.

Your word will be law as long as the Constitution is observed..

Give me a gun law that A> will prevent or help prevent mass shootings and B> is compatible with the 2nd Amendment..

You can't, because any such law that meets those criteria has already been passed..

The laws proposed yesterday would not be compatible with the 2nd Amendment..

Only ONE thing will prevent mass shootings..

Pass mental health laws that give LEOs access to any and all mental health records. Pass a law that FORCES mental health workers to report even the SLIGHTEST hint of violence from ANYONE to LEOs.

THAT will prevent or help prevent mass shootings..

It's not a GUN issue here.. It's a MENTAL HEALTH issue..

But Democrats won't even CONSIDER mental health laws as moron Senator whatisname made clear yesterday..

So, these incidents will continue to occur and Democrats will still wail and whine about a non-existent problem..

As the Australia gun ban has proven beyond ANY doubt, addressing the tool used won't do squat..

Those who want to mass murder will STILL mass murder.. They will simply use a different tool..

As far as school shootings specifically..

Since Democrats instituted their DEFUND, DEMORALIZE, DEMONIZE THE POLICE policies, schools have booted SROs out of schools all over the country.

THAT needs to be reversed. We need to put cops BACK in schools. When I was an deputy, we would have small SO substations scattered all over the county.. Rooms were us deputies could drive to and sit with some peace and quiet to write reports and such.

It wouldn't be too difficult to set up such small substations in every school in the country..

We also need to train and arm teachers and school officials and allow conceal carry at ALL schools. People who conceal carry have already been trained and vetted and have extensive background checks.. It's simply moronic to disallow such trained and vetted people from carrying on school grounds.. I'm retired LEO so I conceal carry everywhere I go...

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

We need to insure that more good guys with guns are present in our schools..

As far as how to pay for it?? There is already an influx of funds to expand Law Enforcement. Adding SROs and substations in schools would be easily covered by those funds..

Once the GOP takes over Congress, even more funding will become available for Law Enforcement.. There won't be any DEFUND THE POLICE bullshit after Jan 2023 ya'all can bet on that..

Those who complain about funding will simply be exposed as the kid-hating school-shooting-loving morons they really are..

A school shooting may have been narrowly averted … — thanks in part to the quick response of a school resource officer, who shot a gunman before anyone else was harmed.

The gunman, a student at the school identified as Matthew A. Milby, 19, of Dixon, shot at the officer but missed, the police said. Mr. Dallas returned fire and struck Mr. Milby, who was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

As school systems across the country debate arming staff, state and local officials praised the actions of the school resource officer who fired at a gunman at Great Mills High School.

“He responded exactly as we train our personnel to respond," said St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron of school resource officer Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill. Police said Austin Rollins, 17, shot at two other students who were injured. Gaskill fired at Rollins, who almost simultaneously fired his handgun, Cameron said. He put on eye liner. You know like punk rockers, heavy metal headbangers, goths and yes trans people too. Doesn't prove anything.

Big talk about facts and all you got is a unverified photo that other media outlets as well as evidently 4chan have dismissed. Have fun playing with your trans dude, I'll wait for something real...

And it wouldn't be much of a problem if Democrats and their DEFUND THE POLICE policies hadn't eliminated funding for SROs... :

SRO programs are not touched by cuts to police departments general budget because they are mostly funded by the school systems, not the police departments who may only cover 25% of the officers pay at MOST!

The problem is that police departments across the country are having a difficult time hiring enough officers to fill their own needs to be able to consider having SRO officers in their schools. Being an SRO officer takes that officer out of the departments daily shift rotations as they cannot answer 911 calls for service (except in the most dire of circumstances).

And for every story of an SRO stopping a possible mass shooting event there are just as many stories of unarmed teachers and students tackling and preventing a possible mass shooter from carrying out their plan.

You want a way to stop mass shootings? Best chances to achieve that would be with (1) universal medical coverage for all citizens which might have gotten the shooter the mental health care that he needed and (2) a national registry of gun ownership which would allow officers to remove firearms from homes where domestic violence is present so that mental health evals can be performed before the guns are returned to the home.

Your solution has great theoretical merit, but the reality of health care for tne nut jobs of the world turns out to be seriously problematic, because the definition of nut jobs is definitely not an exact science.
