From The Archives -- In Defense Of Hookers

[ Posted Monday, June 20th, 2011 – 00:11 UTC ]

[Program Note: OK, since I've been away, and since June has been a (shall we say) "sub-par" month for us here in terms of posting things in a timely manner, I'm going to run a rare late-Sunday column for your edification. This is, in some ways, a mea culpa for the break in service last week. Also, it seemed appropriate, since I've been away so much this month that I pretty much completely missed commenting on the continuing saga of Anthony Weiner. So, while Weiner's case was a bit more unique (no hookers were even involved), I thought it time to dig this column out from three years ago, which I wrote in the wake of the Eliot Spitzer scandal. You may also wish to check out a follow-up column I wrote entitled "On Whores" in November of 2009. In any case, this column somehow seemed appropriate, given the mainstream media frenzy in the past few weeks....]

Friday Talking Points [169] -- Weiner Roast

[ Posted Friday, June 10th, 2011 – 15:40 UTC ]

Having just gotten back from a trip abroad where the news was dominated by the story of a politician facing severe consequences (and the end of his political career) for his sexual misconduct, I opened up the pages of the American news to find... well, pretty much the same thing.

From The Archives -- On Whores

[ Posted Thursday, October 14th, 2010 – 16:05 UTC ]

[Note: This column originally ran on 11/25/09. Today was likely going to be either a quick column or a re-run anyway, due to an automotive-related appointment; so this column immediately sprang to mind due to the term being in the news again in a political setting.

Senate Midterm Election Overview

[ Posted Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 – 17:00 UTC ]

It is time once again to take a look at the state of the midterm election races in the Senate. It has been over a month since we last examined the state of these races, and there has been some movement in both directions. Of course, the most dramatic of these has been in Delaware, but other states have been moving around as well (although admittedly, not as drastically).

Friday Talking Points [137] -- Listen To Westen And Lakoff, Democrats!

[ Posted Friday, September 3rd, 2010 – 16:24 UTC ]

Jollification aside, though, we're still one week away from Congress returning to briefly do their job (or at least give the appearance of doing so), before they award themselves another month or so off, in order to campaign. Labor Day is right around the corner (or perhaps blowing past the corner at 75 miles per hour, if you live in the hurricane zone -- which contains, my television assures me, everything east of about Denver).

Senate Midterm Election Overview

[ Posted Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 – 17:04 UTC ]

I should say, up front, that I think Democrats are going to lose a few seats in the Senate, but that they will regain control of the chamber after the votes are counted. But while the House remains volatile in this respect, the landscape for the Senate has noticeably improved for the Democrats. So there's a little good news and a little bad news for everyone.

On Whores

[ Posted Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 – 18:12 UTC ]

Because some in Washington have apparently latched onto these terms either as a favorite insult to hurl, or as a faux-controversy (while giving Oscar-worthy performances of having the Victorian vapors over hearing the words). Following close behind are charges of "sexism" and "insensitivity" and probably a few other "-isms" to boot.
