Florida will be an interesting governor's race to watch. It is an incredibly expensive state to run for office in, due to the multiple large media markets within the state. Democrats were hopeful, after Hurricane Maria, that a large influx of Puerto Ricans into the state (who had fled the island's destruction) would equate to a big boost in registered Democrats. Since Puerto Ricans are already American citizens, there would be no delay in this boost appearing. But so far, the data does not show all that big a boost in the voter registration rolls, so this may turn out to be illusory.

Most of you probably don't know that I have this little thing I do, which is to get up and go down to the local Waffle House for coffee every day at five.

A mixed group to be sure, but not terribly unlike all of those that wander into our little corner of the web here.

Cross words do occasionally fly, as they will in such forums. Our older waitress Rhonda has a standing rule that anyone who gets personal has to pay their bill in full first, so that nobody gets to stomp out on it.

Every once in a while, a new face will appear and insist, "no politics! no religion!", and we'll spend awhile in sullen silence until that person leaves. It's recognized as a fair request - most bars observe a similar ban for the obvious reason that drunks have a propensity for escalating arguments that others don't.

These sorts of impromptu discussion groups pop up all the time in America, sorta like impromptu un-organized baseball games used to pop up in empty lots when my dad was a kid (before anal-retentive parents took over children's recreation).

It's certainly not an exclusively American phenomena. There are similar scenes being played out worldwide, from the mosques of Iran to the tea houses in Japan, to the lunch breaks at the diamond mines in South Africa.

But mine is the only country in the world where, when things get hot, someone invariably insists "it's my constitutional right to say what I think!", and everyone else has to agree. God Bless America, and don't forget to tip your waitress, or she'll bring holy hell on you.

My point is, things are going to get hotter in US politics before this is all over. Trump has energized both sides with his rhetoric, and brought some extreme folks out of the woodwork that used to shy away from speaking their minds, at least when they were sober.

But I'm all in favor of playing by "American" Waffle House rules: let the conversation flow freely, like kiddie pee at a water park, but compensate CW for the giant pain in the ass you're being. Figure about a buck per insult, eh? Surely there's a manic here somewhere that can add that all up for us.

In fact, it's very rare that I read anything you write because so much of it is spam bullshit that I've simply gotten used to scrolling past most comments with your name attached. In fact, it seems like you could have done something similar when that person started posting things you found disagreeable, and perhaps alerted a moderator to the offense if you believed it was severe enough. That's the most widely accepted solution I've seen across the various forums I've visited, not responding in kind or taking it to the next level. That merely makes the forum even more toxic for all involved, generally either leading to the death of the forum or bannings in order to rein things in again.
