Basically one of the most common mistakes that campaigns make is to focus the vast majority of their money and creativity on media buys, instead of building out human infrastructure, public events, canvassing, word of mouth, GOTV and other essential but less sexy forms of politicking. in every election i can think of that has occurred since then, the wisdom of his statement has shown to be true. Tom Steyer founded a billionaire global hedge fund that he's run for a quarter century and is literally a "moneyed interest." About the only thing they actually have in common is being born in New York. Besides not putting in the groundwork and running for offices directly concerned with the issues you care about (or claim to care about), where's the evidence that you have put substantial money and effort into child poverty, environmental issues, etc, as a private citizen? Speaking and campaigning have value, and so does paying for infrastructure and advertising for the people getting their hands dirty, but there's a lot of credibility in doing some of the actual work. Not just photo op work, either. Yes and yes (being offshore has mostly spared me the ads).
