I'm not going to dignify those comparisons with a response, because they're not remotely similar.

Unfair to claim they're "not remotely similar" when on their face they are definitely similar.

Iran just got done murdering over ten thousand, perhaps even thirty thousand of their own, and has spent the past 47 years funding and arming proxy terrorist groups.

Please tell me you are not falling for that Orwellian "we've been at war with Iran for 47 years" and are not starting it but stopping it gaslighting. No, I'm not accusing you, I'm genuinely hoping you're not falling for it.

As for funding terrorist groups for "47 years," it appears the GOP has conveniently forgotten some things: The "Enterprise" off-the-books operation of Reagan and his administration during that timeline means the GOP is admitting to literally arming the enemy... the very definition of treason.

I may have mentioned this a time or two, but the Righties are not particularly known for their ability to connect the dots.

I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority here regarding the Iran attack. irrespective of whatever cockamamie reasons Donald might come up with, I'm not convinced it was a bad idea.

I won't go into further detail, but it was definitely a "bad idea," although "bad" (as you know) is a relative term depending on one's perspective.

From the perspective of the United States Constitution and various assorted international laws, can you at least be convinced it was illegal?

am I the only one who read "if they rise, they rise" and thought of Ivan Drago from Rocky 4?

Heh. No, you are not!

"I must break you," also came to mind. :)

@Bashi,

In war there are thousands of possibilities, most of them lousy. however, i don't buy your thinking on this at all. neither Ukraine nor Poland exported hostage taking or suicide bombing. Iran did both for almost half a century. you're right about Bibi of course, but not having pure motives isn't the same as not having good reasons.

I'm not going to dignify those comparisons with a response,

Maybe you should. Those ten maybe thirty thousand are rookie numbers compared to Gaza civilians killed over the last few years. The snarky response would be, they killed the protesters but at least they did not level the family home.

If it turns out that regime change happens quickly and Iran rejoins the world community then it's a good thing. But, on the other hand, if it turns in to a quagmire with high oil prices spurring a world wide deep recession, I would expect it would spawn a worldwide wave of Antisemitism that gets a lot of Jews killed. All so Bibi and stay out of jail and continue his revenge tour. I also think the tide may be turning in the US. Americans are starting to realize just how effectively Israel and AIPAC have been waging the dog. I would not mind seeing that power diminished.

Then finally if high oil prices allow Putin to continue and succeed in Ukraine, that would be a travesty as the Ukraine/Russia war has deaths way beyond the middle east.

It's interesting to me how we value certain humans over others...

@Russ,
i think you have your history a bit muddy. Operation Ajax was in 1953, less than a month after the Korean war. the Islamic Revolution took place over 25 years later and was against our wishes. I'm not absolving us of responsibility, but it's not like someone at the beginning of Eisenhower's first term could have predicted what would happen at the end of Carter's.

"Mr. Trump has waged an all-out assault on Colorado while pressuring Mr. Polis, a Democrat, to free Ms. Peters."

So why aren't we focusing all of our anger and disgust at Trump for doing this? Polis is being given the choice between freeing one person from jail who committed a non-violent crime or let hundreds of people lose their jobs. Not the decision I would want to have to make if I was in his job, honestly! Trump should not be allowed to do this sort of crap, but we have long ago given up on demanding he follow the rules. Polis is damned no matter which choice he makes.

nypoet22 [8],

WE were the ones who put that terrible leadership team in place 47 years ago! We are the reason they have remained in power all this time! We could have had them terminated long ago, but we didn't. WHY? Maybe because with them around it always gave our military a valid reason to use its' might against someone in the Middle East. Anytime a president needed a good boost to their polling numbers, there was the EVIL Iran to shift the focus onto! Look up film footage of what Iran was like prior to us getting rid of their elected government officials who weren't giving away their oil to us. Who could have known that giving control to religious nutjobs could end up not going our way??? Maybe next time we want to kill the leaders of terrorist states we put in power we could do it in a way that doesn't blow up so many school children!?!

A clear competitor for MIDOW is this Arkansas Democrat:
'Democrat Alex Holladay won a Republican-held seat in the Arkansas state House on Tuesday night, ... Holladay, a healthcare administrator, defeated businessman Bo Renshaw to capture the 70th District outside of Little Rock, a swingy constituency he had come close to winning in 2024.
...
Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, however, wasn’t eager to hold a special election and originally scheduled it for June 9—more than eight months after Wing’s departure, and, notably, after the legislature’s annual session is set to conclude.

But Arkansas Democrats sued, saying that Sanders’ long delay violated state law. A judge agreed and ordered the election be moved up to March 3, the same day as the state’s regularly scheduled primary.'

@ItalyRusty,
I'm not going to dignify those comparisons with a response, because they're not remotely similar. Iran just got done murdering over ten thousand, perhaps even thirty thousand of their own, and has spent the past 47 years funding and arming proxy terrorist groups. they have played at negotiation, but have never been sincere about stopping, even in the face of massive domestic dissent. culturally, a deadly attack on leadership was the only thing with even a chance to make them change their thinking. the leaders were gathered in one place and there wasn't time to dither. therefore, while i don't generally support Donald or Bibi and their bellicose tendencies, i think this particular decision may have been a sound one.

Re: nypoet22 [3]

So, to be clear, you support an unprovoked attack on a sovereign country. No UN resolution, no Congressional authorization required?

And following that logic, you're "not convinced it was a bad idea" for Russia to conduct a "special operation" in Ukraine?

What about Hitler's invasion of Poland?

And in the Senate, a lone Democrat "stands with" the Republicans - again. Is CW finally ready to start calling him out, as he did Sen. Sinema (I-AZ)? Or is there a clear difference (which I've pointed out many times before) that gives the male Senator a pass?
'The 47-53 vote split largely along party lines, with Republican senators united to defeat a measure that would have required congressional approval to continue the operation. ... Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania broke with his party in support of the strikes, which gave GOP leaders additional room to defeat it.'

Obvious choices for MDDOW are the elected representatives who collaborated with their Republican "colleagues" to abdicate their Congressional power to declare war.
First the House:
'Republicans benefited from Democratic defections to help defeat the Iran war measure, which was offered by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.). ... Four Democrats — Reps. Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, Greg Landsman of Ohio and Juan Vargas of California — defied their party to help kill the legislation.'

I have a quibble with your description of Van Hollen's bill (just completed my taxes).

Your description of it is equivalent to a near tripling of the standard deduction.

For a single, your description saves them 25% more than the WaPo article says.
