<i>and as an aside, i am highly concerned about the conspicuous lack of kittens. </i>

Conspicuous lack?

<i>We have to begin with a program note. Because of the tricky calendar this year, this will be the last Friday Talking Points article of the year. For the next two Fridays, we will be presenting our year-end awards columns instead. </i>

So when are we presenting our year-end kittens?

It's Tuesday night, and (full disclosure) I'm still playing catch up from getting behind during the holidays, but looking ahead to this Friday, if Democrat Eileen Higgins -- who defeated in a landslide the candidate that was endorsed by Trump in the Miami mayoral election held today -- isn't your next "Most Impressive Democrat of the Week," then it's going to be a hell of a week for the Democrats.

I encourage all Republicans (who aren't leaving and/or quitting to "spend more time with their families") to seek an endorsement from Donny Two Dolls and invite Dozing Donald to your rallies and cling tightly (and repeat often) his message that "affordability" is a "Democrat hoax" when it was Trump himself who campaigned repeatedly to "make America affordable again." If it's a hoax, it's admittedly a hoax of Trump's own making, yet another in a long line of Trumpian cons.

Talk about proof positive that Trump knows his voters are stupid, there you have it.

I nominate almost ALL Democratic Congresspersons and Senators as MDDOW (retroactively). When Shrub was president, how many voted to authorize the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq? How many remained silent when Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning, and others revealed the war crimes that America was committing - indeed, how many were indignant that these "traitors" were "abetting the enemy"?
When Obama ordered the extrajudicial assassination of Osama Bin Laden, how many remained silent - or indeed applauded - rather than denouncing the violation of human rights and lack of accountability?

There is a precise term for the Trump administration's confidence in "getting away with murder" (summary executions in international waters by the American military): slippery slope. The Democrats don't have a leg to stand on if they didn't speak out on the numerous previous instances of inhumane and unlawful military actions outside our borders.

it's funny how these things happen, just a little war crime here, just a minor civil rights violation there, and all of a sudden we're living in a country we don't even recognize. it's not as if this has never happened before.

<blockquote>"To live in this process is absolutely not to be able to notice it—please try to believe me—unless one has a much greater degree of political awareness, acuity, than most of us had ever had occasion to develop. Each step was so small, so inconsequential, so well explained or, on occasion, ‘regretted,’ that, unless one were detached from the whole process from the beginning, unless one understood what the whole thing was in principle, what all these ‘little measures’ that no ‘patriotic German’ could resent must some day lead to, one no more saw it developing from day to day than a farmer in his field sees the corn growing. One day it is over his head."
