FACT: It is more likely that Trump won't finish the second term than he'll serve a third term.

I think there's another reason as well. Simply put, the public won't have any interest in seeing him in office again. The economy is currently in a massive bubble, likely even bigger than the housing bubble of 2008. It is very likely to burst in the next year or two, plunging us into a recession so bad it may approach the levels of the Great Depression. If that happens, Trump's popularity with even his base is going to evaporate, and nobody outside of his immediate orbit will be interested in supporting any scheme he might perpetrate to stay in office.

Before I get another paragraph into today’s column it’s the very longest of shots that Trump lives that long. He just had a CT and that’s a test one used to detect a stroke. I, too, want Trump to live to 100 so he faces justice, but I wonder if he even makes it another year.

I've been hearing these rumors for a while now. I tend to agree with your analysis that the basic mechanism - have someone resign the presidency after being elected to it - seems really weak.

Yes, you (Vance, etc.) promised to resign; yes, MAGA will hate you for refusing to do it; and yes, you are the legitimate president of the U.S. -- and Trump can go hang himself as far as you're concerned, given his age and mental deterioration.

The funny thing is to me, that Trump himself, even in his advanced condition of decreptitude, appears to recognize the implausibility of these so-called strategies: "It's too cute". Yeah, like you I rarely find myself agreeing with the man but here he's nailed it, whether by accident or coincidence. It's too cute - no one believes that the 22nd Amendment means that a man who's been president twice by election can still become president for a third term by indirection and shenanigans involving resignations and successions.

Is it all just a scam, to sell election-branded merchandise? Is it all just a scam, to soothe the great man's ego as he looks forward to the end of his time in office and the legal disgraces, distractions, and (yes) death that must soon follow? I think that must be it.

Even this supine Supreme Court cannot possibly reinterpret the super-clear post-FDR amendment to allow this kind of nonsense to happen.

I think.
