Simply put, the public won't have any interest in seeing him in office again. The economy is currently in a massive bubble, likely even bigger than the housing bubble of 2008. It is very likely to burst in the next year or two, plunging us into a recession so bad it may approach the levels of the Great Depression. If that happens, Trump's popularity with even his base is going to evaporate, and nobody outside of his immediate orbit will be interested in supporting any scheme he might perpetrate to stay in office. I tend to agree with your analysis that the basic mechanism - have someone resign the presidency after being elected to it - seems really weak. Yes, you (Vance, etc.) promised to resign; yes, MAGA will hate you for refusing to do it; and yes, you are the legitimate president of the U.S. -- and Trump can go hang himself as far as you're concerned, given his age and mental deterioration.
