A reminder that our American service members take an Oath to defend our Constitution against all enemies foreign AND DOMESTIC. Do you think our super patriotic military is going to look at what Trump’s trying to do and go, “We won’t stop THIS enemy of the Constitution, we’ll get the NEXT one”?

There’s another issue which mirrors the whole futility of Trump’s January 6th insurrection. Even if his mob had successfully stopped the ceremonial Certification of Biden’s win and permanently occupied the Capitol why would any local, State or off site Federal governmental entities to just say, “Oh well, the mob’s still there so now we have to just obey Trump”?

Likewise, even if Trump got every last flag officer to pledge fealty it wouldn’t matter if the vast number of military elected to NOT betray our country.

None of this stuff will happen unless we collectively obey in advance. It’s right out of the authoritarian handbook.

MtnCaddy-

Heavily armed, you say? Here is an interesting thought experiment for you. There are more privately held firearms in the LA basin alone than the entire US military. Unless it's total war the slaughter of civilians to the point it would make Putin and Netanyahu blush, I think military action is a non-starter if the people really push back. But hey, the right likes to cram the second amendment down our throats...They get to live with it.

And it will be interesting to see what they think now that Trump wants to personally speak to those 800 of our top military. He hasn't been very coherent lately...

MtnC,
I hope you're right. The last report I read today was that the message will be, "Redeploy to combat the internal enemies of the president in the nation's cities, or you're dismissed or worse."
Maybe these men and women will refuse en masse. I hope so. But it's more likely to me that some will refuse and some will go along for now, pending clearly illegal or impossible orders.
Will they overthrow the president in a coup d'etat? That seems just as anti-constitutional as everything Trump is doing, and equally contrary to their path of service.

And think of it: tomorrow some 800 of our top military have been summoned to an in person meeting. Betcha more than a couple of them privately discuss how to remove Putin’s Bitch from power. These old guard military leadership ain’t gonna violate their Oath.

One cannot have a banana republic unless the military goes along.

I served in the 1980s and took the same Oath to defend our Constitution that the military takes today. Back then everyone I served with took that Oath super seriously. I’m just a c-hair nervous these days because Trump is trying to go full fascist, but it’s still the longest of shots that our military goes along with Trump.

But let’s say the military does go along with Trump. It so happens that an occupying army needs one soldier for every 50 civilians to maintain control. And that’s for regular populations, not a population as heavily armed as Muricans. Given our population of 340 million it would require over seven million military personnel to do the job. We’ve got 1.2 million total, so that’s a nonstarter. Also, Trump has no legal path to declaring Martial Law, so relax! Our military is far more likely to depose the Trump administration than to go along with it.

nyp22 for [6],
Point taken, but it goes both ways. Incoherent speech doesn't necessarily NOT mean anything about cognitive ability, either. And there are numerous ongoing reports of the president's behavior, expression, and language that seem to point to a serious mental decline, beyond the effects of merely ageing.

Yes per BB [1]: Good strong talking points.

However, I noted one missing, though mentioned in the intro: "It can only good happen" quoth the president of the United States. As you say, the media is ignoring this kind of thing, as they would not for any other president - but 'mangling the English language' is not really what's going on, here, I think. Ongoing dementia is happening in full public view. The U.N. speech is another much larger example, as that foreign diplomat tried to point out to anyone who would listen: "stark, raving mad" is his term for it. And why is that not 'News' to the reporters of the national political media?

Speaking of Banana Republic, it seems I'm being invaded...Trump is ordering troops to Portland to enjoy the beautiful fall weather and eat some Voodoo Donuts. Oh, and maybe harass the eight people protesting the ICE facility...

that's sort of Donald's overarching m.o. - he creates conditions that make a crisis highly likely, then when the inevitable crisis occurs, marvels at how "nobody could have predicted it" - except, y'know, everyone who did.

Bravo on a meaningful set of Talking Points for the most part.
However, I'm puzzled why, since the opening essay referred to "banana republic", none of the TPs was about Trump bending every lever of power to his benefit and his opponents' detriment. Even TP#1 is silent on the FCC's Mafia-style tactics used against "Jimmy Kimmel Live".

There was some article on forbes or fortune this week. Didn't read the article the the headline caught my eye. Something like CEOs unhappy with economy and tariffs, want to make America America again. That should be the rallying cry of the Democrats:

Make America America again.

Easy, simple and everyone at this point has an idea of what it means to them...
