Both are beyond unusual, they are in fact unprecedented in modern times. Harris won no primaries -- she didn't even run in any of them.

"Unusual"? In March 1968 when Lyndon Johnson announced he would not seek "nor accept the nomination," Vice President Hubert Humphrey also didn't run in a primary. Humphrey sought the backing of party leaders while McCarthy, RF Kennedy (until his murder) and others sought the Democratic nomination through the (stupid) caucuses and primaries.

I don't see the big deal here about Harris becoming the nominee without having won in a primary. What if Biden had passed away having secured the nomination?
