The coach had been warned by the school district that he was not to lead a prayer service because there could be players who felt pressured to attend and participate.

Teenagers have a strong desire to "fit in" and could also fear not being viewed as favorably by the coach if they did not participate.

But this was anything BUT a "brief, quiet, personal religious observance". The coach announced it in an interview with the local paper that he intended to hold the prayer service after the game.
