The reporter whose name was eventually affixed to the story found out only after it was published.

Only after it was published by Murdoch's rag (Hamilton would roll over in his grave) the opinion shows on Fox then began covering the story and, of course, used the Post’s reporting as a shield and blamed the rest of the media for not covering the same story on which they passed.

Here's what I think.

IMO we suffered through 12 years of Foreign Policy incompetence.

Barack Red Line in the Desert Obama didn't have the balls to stand up to anyone. While he read all of the intelligence material, he never spoke with any of his intel people and the resulting lack of back and forth left him in his own bubble.

Trump apparently didn't care to read anything whatsoever and was reportedly sometimes simply swayed by whomever he spoke with last. Especially if they're Mar-a-Lago whales. Putin helped elect Trump and Trump returned the solid by doing far more to weaken NATO than anything Putin could have done himself.

Putin saw Joe wasn't going to do the same so he jumped while he still had the chance. Which was arguably back in 2014.
