Tim Boyd’s actions, while small in scope, deserve to be formally recognized as a “Great Moment in Dickitude.” A cursory Wikipedia search supports the notion that Dickitude is a well recognized social concept.....and yet, there seems to be no Museum of Dickitude!!! Neither is there an annual Awards Ceremony awarding a statuette Dicky to the Biggest Dick. Some of the Darwin Awards come close....and the Nuremberg Trials were spot on. That said, so many Dicks labor in obscurity. For every Pol Pot, untold legions of dicks are suffered in silence. Pity the One Day Dick.

Presumably the Republican/Libertarian plan for disasters, at least for anyone not super-rich, is the same as their public health plan, as articulated during the ACA debates: don't get sick [get caught in a disaster]; if you do, die quickly.

I've been reading this liberal response to Texas' deregulated power market for a couple of days now, about how see? regulations are for a reason, etc. etc.

But I never see anyone show the federal regulation that Texas dodged, that would have required the power companies not to "winterize" their equipment, but to winterize it to below-zero Fahrenheit standards - temperatures that are unheard of in Texas up until now.

In other words, is this really about deregulation and reregulation and corporate greed? Or is it, as a NY Times analysis suggested, about how climate change is making federal regulations useless because regulations are based on best practices from past experience. How the feds and states are going to have to up their regulatory game, looking forward not backward, and buy into science's best projections of what weather conditions must reasonably be guarded against ahead of time, in 2030 or 2040 or further.

My impression is the Biden administration may actually be thinking this way; and I'm sure the Texas government would rather not - or, in a worst case scenario, is unable to because the entire administrative structure is manned by climate deniers. But just like the other episodes Texas has suffered lately (century rainstorms every few years, etc.) this one is a wake-up call, not a gotcha on the ancient debate about free markets vs. central planning or whatever.
