What fun! I have an entire lesson on "calendar math" for my students (H.S., mentally ill) that covers the basics of your essay, but misses a lot of the juicy details you reveal. Thanks for filling in the missing pieces (riots at lost wages in 1582, Egyptians landing on a base-12 system by counting hands as well as fingers, etc.). My impression was that Julius Caesar learned that the year was 365 1/4 days, not 365, from Egyptian experts during his time in Egypt when he wasn't diddling Cleopatra. I love the '12 days of Christmas' detail coming from the attempt to bridge the gap between the Christians' Jan. 6 date, and the pagans' Dec. 25 (solstice) date.
Thanks for this on our darkest night of the year. And Merry Christmas!

@cw,

Better talk about weather and sports with the Outer Podunkians, just to be safe.

HA! except for, y'know, sharpiegate. not to mention, the american football team whose owner, when threatened with a exodus of sponsors and major financial losses, chose to go without any moniker at all rather than choose a less-racist one.
