Y'all know I can't let revisionist history go unanswered... so please allow me to explain the election of 1864 and how Abraham Lincoln came to be reelected because this opinion writer is trying to snow the goober gallery of the gullible -- a not uncommon trait of revisionist history opinion writers -- and I'm not a fan of misinformation and glossing over facts in favor of fantasy... never have been.

As the opinion writer says, a group of Republicans did indeed nominate John C. Frémont (former Senator of California) as their candidate for the election of 1864 by breaking with their party and forming the Radical Democracy Party. Frémont had been the first presidential candidate of the new Republican Party in 1856.

The Republican Party and the Democratic Party were both fractured during the Civil War and both parties divided into multiple factions; there were Republicans against the war and/or pro-slavery and Democrats who supported the war and/or abolitionists, etc. So how did the current president make a run for and secure his reelection?

Abraham Lincoln joined with some of the War Democrats -- members of the Democratic Party who supported the Union -- and formed a political party called the National Union Party. At the National Union Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, Republican, was "ditched" in favor of Andrew Johnson, Democrat.

Although women couldn't vote, they were strongly mobilized in demanding equal political and civil rights and mobilized taking active roles in campaigning for the Lincoln-Johnson ticket whose National Union Party platform's primary goals were:

* The unconditional surrender of the Confederacy
* Abolishing slavery
* Encouragement of immigration
* Keeping Europe neutral and the Confederacy unrecognized
* Building of the Transcontinental Railroad
* Enforcement of the Monroe Doctrine (staying out of internal affairs/wars between European powers, etc.)

There were only 25 states in the election of 1864 since the South who participated in 1860 wasn't exactly allowed to do that in the following election (for obvious reasons). Of the 25 states, Lincoln won 22. Is there a whole lot more to the story? Of course, you know it, but without getting too wordy, that's how Lincoln won reelection against all the odds in 1864; he joined forces with those Democrats who opposed slavery and formed a ticket with a member of the Democratic Party... and the rest is history.

While Donald Trump could certainly defy the current odds and win reelection, a Lincoln-like landslide ain't going to happen. For those who know history, does Donald Trump resemble Abraham Lincoln? *laughs* That's unbelievably uninformed and unequivocally effing hysterical.
