And top policy officials on the Biden campaign are preparing for a fall economic debate that might look very different than the one predicted at the start of the pandemic in March. “They are very much aware of this,” said an informal adviser.

Furman’s case begins with the premise that the 2020 pandemic-triggered economic collapse is categorically different than the Great Depression or the Great Recession, which both had slow, grinding recoveries.

Instead, he believes, the way to think about the current economic drop-off, at least in the first two phases, is more like what happens to a thriving economy during and after a natural disaster: a quick and steep decline in economic activity followed by a quick and steep rebound.

The Covid-19 recession started with a sudden shuttering of many businesses, a nationwide decline in consumption and massive increase in unemployment. But starting around April 15, when economic reopening started to spread but the overall numbers still looked grim, Furman noticed some data that pointed to the kind of recovery that economists often see after a hurricane or industry wide catastrophe like the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Consumption and hiring started to tick up “in gross terms, not in net terms,” Furman said, describing the phenomenon as a “partial rebound.” The bounce back “can be very very fast, because people go back to their original job, they get called back from furlough, you put the lights back on in your business. Given how many people were furloughed and how many businesses were closed you can get a big jump out of that. It will look like a V.”

Furman’s argument is not that different from the one made by White House economic advisers and Trump, who have predicted an explosive third quarter, and senior adviser Jared Kushner, who said in late April that "the hope is that by July the country's really rocking again." White House officials were thrilled to hear that some of their views have been endorsed by prominent Democrats.

In early April, Jason Furman, a top economist in the Obama administration and now a professor at Harvard, was speaking via Zoom to a large bipartisan group of top officials from both parties. The economy had just been shut down, unemployment was spiking and some policymakers were predicting an era worse than the Great Depression. Instead of forecasting a prolonged Depression-level economic catastrophe, Furman laid out a detailed case for why the months preceding the November election could offer Trump the chance to brag — truthfully — about the most explosive monthly employment numbers and gross domestic product growth ever.

Since the Zoom call, Furman has been making the same case to anyone who will listen, especially the close-knit network of Democratic wonks who have traversed the Clinton and Obama administrations together, including top members of the Biden campaign.

Furman’s counterintuitive pitch has caused some Democrats, especially Obama alumni, around Washington to panic. “This is my big worry,” said a former Obama White House official who is still close to the former president. Asked about the level of concern among top party officials, he said, “It’s high — high, high, high, high.”

This was the line taken by Symone Sanders, a senior adviser to the Biden campaign who tweeted, “The comments made at the end of the Breakfast Club interview were in jest, but let’s be clear about what the VP was saying: he was making the distinction that he would put his record with the African American community up against Trump’s any day.” This balderdash quite literally fails the laugh test. President Trump’s pre-pandemic job creation initiatives and criminal justice reform have done more for blacks in three years than Joe Biden accomplished in half a century backstroking around the swamp.

After it became clear that the “just kidding” strategy wasn’t selling, Sanders simply refused to answer further questions. When NBC’s Chuck Todd, not exactly a purveyor of GOP talking points, tried to ask her a question about the issue she interrupted him thus: “Chuck, I’m not going to do this. Chuck, I’m not going to do this.” Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) was less reticent: “Joe Biden’s comments are the most arrogant and condescending thing I’ve heard in a very long time. I am offended but not surprised.” Nor was Michigan GOP Senate candidate John James who, like Sen. Scott, is black. Indeed, the latter was moved to explain what really motivates the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee:

The Democratic Party has taken the black vote for granted for decades, but on Friday former Vice President Joe Biden took this view to a new and very hurtful level.… Biden has shown clearly that he thinks he knows better than black people what is best for us, and that if we don’t support him we are denying our own racial identity and heritage. Worse, I don’t see Biden’s Democratic colleagues holding him accountable for his comments. Instead, I hear silence.… Biden’s views have been exposed and stand in stark contrast to President Trump, who visited Michigan Thursday and actually listened to the needs of black people from black people.

The blame cannot be FULLY put onto Joe Biden..

Democrats have been screwing over black Americans for decades now.. Compare and contrast that to the VERY REAL progress President Trump and the GOP has made in helping black Americans pre-Pandemic...

Joe Biden simply stated out loud what Democrats have been muttering for decades..

If you don't vote Democrat, you ain't really black..

What do they mean she "doesn't even exist"!? Lots of people are saying it, John! Trump had her name completely scrubbed from the Internet, and the fact they can't find her mentioned anywhere is all the more proof that she exists!

It’s a very suspicious thing, and I hope somebody gets to the bottom of it. It'll be a very good thing.

I was puzzled by Kick's series of tweets about 'Justice for Carolyn', and found this article in Inquisitr about this latest attempt to spoof Trump. This quote the article more or less makes clear what's going on:

“I don’t care that Donald Trump didn’t really murder Carolyn Gombell,” tweeted that political analysis site Palmer Report. “I don’t care that Carolyn Gombell doesn’t even exist. I’m still demanding #JusticeForCarolyn because why the hell not? If Trump can demand investigations into imaginary murders, the rest of us can too!”

I imagine this won't go anywhere, because the president's opponents are honest enough to admit they're spreading slime to prove a point, not because they believe it, while the president's base has been told for years that anything negative about him is a lie propagated by the lying liberal media.

I remember reading your earlier piece on Twitter and the president, and agreeing with it, in theory. In theory, because I don't use Twitter and I never read the president's tweets - when they are quoted in reportage or commentary, I skip to what follows, knowing I'll end up learning what he said anyway but at least not hearing or reading that nasty, nasty voice again. (Just as I do on the radio - when I realize I'm about to hear him saying something on NPR, I switch to progressive rock or the like until I know the danger has passed.) And here we are, with a grieving widower begging for justice, wondering whether this time will be different, when we know it won't. I love the fantasy of the Dems in the House shaming, or trying to shame, Twitter execs, but it won't work. To hope so is to hope that the national press is going to stop sending reporters to hear his speeches or his office's press conferences, or stop reporting his every statement on the front pages and top of the feeds. At this point (and frankly, a hell of a lot earlier, like early 2016), we know everything he says is a lie, or should be treated as one until confirmed as truth by some other official with proven credibility. So nothing he says needs to be on the nation's conversational menu - only what he does: actual actions, actual deeds, actual legislation, regulation, nominations. Those are facts which must be reported. The rest, not just Twitter but all of it, should be ignored and buried by any media outlet that still wants people to believe it actually reports the truth.
