First off, as I understand it (and I don't recall hearing about the Hyde amendment until now), it has been part of numerous budgets and spending bills over the many years since it was first passed and Democrats in Congress have voted for it many times - maybe even some of those running for the Democratic nomination today (I'd like to find out).

Secondly, I can understand why Democrats voted for it in the first place, decades ago. I mean, how can the government fund abortion in any case when so many people (about half?) feel so strongly that abortions are wrong on religious and other grounds?

On the other hand, the Supreme Court and highest law of the land says that women have a right to abortion, with certain restrictions, of course. So how could the government not fund abortions because that would necessarily and disproportionately block access for poor and otherwise disadvantaged groups of people.

However, the Hyde amendment was revised to make federal funds available in cases of rape or incest or when the life of the mother is in danger.

And, we have to take into account the assault underway by Republicans, largely, to effectively ban abortions at the state level, pending court approval. But, some (many?) of these laws abide by the Hyde amendment by allowing for abortions in cases of rape, incest and health of the mother.

Doesn't planned parenthood use funds it raises (not from the government) to help women who are in need but can't afford it? And, aren't there other organizations who help as well?

As for Biden's turnaround, I take him at his word that he became convinced by his critics and even his own campaign that he needed to reconsider his support for it to be consistent with his stance on other issues like healthcare and accessibility. I don't see this move as being done for political expedience, in other words.

I would have been fine if he had stuck to his guns, as well.
