"It's not single issue voting. It's setting a basic minimum standard of adequacy before considering the candidate's position on other issues. A starting point."

What shameless and illogical BS!

You frame your politics as "A starting point," not "starting points." So what are the other mystery starting points (issues) that define your political movement? You never specifically mention any of them. One point is a single issue. You are a loner pushing a single issue political movement.

Backing up your singular focus, you call your Organization "OneDemand." The only demand you ever talk about is "take Big Money, Lose Our Votes." What policies follow that up?

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks a duck it is a duck, not a couple ducks, or a flock of ducks. You are a single issue movement.

Neilm [22]:<i>Trump to Nancy: in 21 days "the race is on".

Air traffic controllers to Trump: "You stop our pay again, we'll cut your dick off."</i>

The big lesson learned from the last 35 days?

If you fuck up airports, people get pissed, and they usually know who to blame

It isn't like the public needed to be detectives, they probably just agreed with the guy who said on TV a couple of months ago "I am proud to shut down the government for border security, I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down."

While I am among those who find Pelosi too centrist, and generally dislike politicians having close ties to corporations and billionaires, I do have to say Pelosi impressed me with how she dealt with this. Limiting the influence of money in politics is one of the most important issues to me. However it is not the only issue I care about. Preventing the wall from happening really does matter. I agree with nypoet22: Pelosi is indeed a part of the “let them eat cake coalition”, yet I cannot help admiring her for how she played this. It was a display of keen political skills as well as solid brass balls.

I also think it is short sighted to say that this isn’t impressive or doesn’t matter since it doesn’t involve getting money out of politics. That issue indirectly affects millions of lives in negative ways. But there are other issues that affect innocent lives as well. If the goal is a a more just and humane country with better quality of life for its inhabitants, well, lots of political issues have an impact on that goal. So I don’t think it is justifiable to be a single issue voter.

@kick,

the point is not that nancy pelosi is a "wonderful person," it's that she's a superb politician, and is thus far the only person to go toe to toe with donald trump and make him back down. twice. well, the only non-russian person, anyway...

<i>Thank you. That quote from Alexandra Pelosi has convinced me what a wonderful person Nancy Pelosi must be. </i>

Well, you're certainly welcome, DH, and for my next trick, I'll be happy to post some of your quotes from comments that convinced virtually everyone on this board "what a wonderful person" you "must be."

<i>How could I have been so wrong aboot her? :D </i>

It's a habit of yours that is by no means restricted to her. :)

All other attributes aside, it is becoming painfully obvious, to anyone paying attention and doing the sums, that Trump is an incompetent President.

Is it possible we are moving (drifting? stumbling?) towards an informal American Regency Period during which the House and Senate leaders become functional co-Regents?

Under this Regency, Trump occupies the White House, sits in the oval office a few hrs per day, watches TV, most of the day, tweets his mind twice a day and signs whatever he is damn well told to sign by Regents Pelosi and McConnell...or else*. This might be more palatable to both political parties, most of the public and maybe even Trump himself, than the awkward alternatives of either an acrimonious impeachment or monthly government shutdowns. Better to hold The President hostage than to be held politically hostage by a President who is obviously a few bricks short of a load.

If it doesn't work out, well there is still impeachment or failing at that, at least less time until the next Presidential election.

* or else being the nuclear options of: 1) impeachment and conviction or 2) impeachment's fraternal twin, the 25th Amendment.

I went shopping at my local Walmart yesterday. After my groceries were scanned, I told the clerk "I've been shopping here for years, and Trump told me you'd understand, and I wouldn't have to pay."

Clerk said "Sorry, I've only been working her 10 days, you gotta pay."

Now I'll never trust the asshole-in-chief again!

CW: <i>No word yet on whether the SOTU is back on or not, but now that the government is reopening Pelosi might just allow Trump to give his big speech on schedule. </i>

On schedule!? Oh, Hell no!

Paula is dead on correct that NPDP should offer Cave Man a SOTU date several weeks out and beyond February 15 that is contingent upon the government remaining open. Why? Because Trump is flailing miserably in his attempt to spin this as him taking care of the federal workers, which is pretty piss poor spinning when he's also promising to shut it down again if he doesn't get his way.

NPDP and Democrats should make it clear that Trump will not be allowed to take government employees as hostages.

<blockquote>She’ll cut your head off, and you won’t even know you’re bleeding. That’s all you need to know about her. ~ Alexandra Pelosi </blockquote>

CW: <i>President Donald Trump's government shutdown became only the second-biggest media story this morning, after the news broke of an early-morning raid that wound up with the arrest of Roger Stone on charges of obstruction and witness-tampering. </i>

the 'let them eat cake' coalition is not restricted to just donald trump and the republicans. trump and the republicans may support cake publicly, but behind closed doors the democrats take just as much cake as the republicans do.

'let them eat cake' has been the mantra of government for too long. shouldn't we finally try something different? the only rational solution is pie.

This was an enormously satisfying conclusion to a stupid and damaging episode.

The fact that Blotus was routed, not just by a Dem, but by a 78 year-old female Dem - priceless. (The fact that Repubs just wasted a lot of dough trying to defeat her in the midterms is additional gravy.)

The fact that Mitch McConnell spent the last several days in hiding, unable to manage Blotus and unwilling to defy him while Nancy went on TV every day and calmly held her ground - priceless.

The SOTU is still in limbo which is GOOD - she needs to hang onto that to help ensure Blotus doesn't back out in response to the pounding he's getting from all sides.

AND she just tweeted:

<blockquote>
Roger Stone’s indictment makes clear there was a deliberate, coordinated effort by top Trump campaign officials to subvert the will of the American people during the 2016 Election.

Why has the Trump Administration continued to discuss pulling the U.S. out of NATO, which would be a massive victory for Putin?

The Special Counsel investigation is working, and the House will ensure that it can continue, free from interference from the White House. Read my full statement here: https://t.co/8OSuz3eq1w
</blockquote>

First time I can remember that the anti-Trump predictions from the commentariat ("He can't win ... he'll have to fold ... Pelosi has all the cards") actually came true - at least for now.

I'm waiting to hear all the noise about how dangerous a beast is when its cornered, how the Dems will have to 'appease' the president to salve his wounded feelings lest he declare war on Venezuela or New York City or something. (See his comment that he will definitely declare an "emergency" and build the wall if he doesn't get the money from Congress by mid-February.)

The Let Them Eat Cake Administration really should have shown some discipline and chosen a unified talking point like maybe "let them eat cake". Their muddled attempts to dance around the message just left them looking out of touch and callous.
