"Trade deficits" are an interesting phenomenon little understood by the vast majority of Americans, I suspect including you.

If you forget the financial implications momentarily, you quickly realize that when foreigners send us the physical fruits of their labors (in the case of China, pretty much exclusively manufactured goods), which cost them much effort and resources to produce, in exchange for our little green pieces of paper (which cost us damn near nothing to produce), the net result is we consume far more than we otherwise would, and they consume far less, which is the definition of an INCREASE in our standard of living and a DECREASE in theirs.
