I still think the public option could solve a whole lot of Obamacare's problems. And New York is currently debating a single-payer program for the whole state.

Eventually, Dems should step up to the plate and offer up their fixes, but I don't think we're quite at that point yet, personally. If it's any help, my wife disagrees with me on this, and agrees with you.

Don Harris [8] -

Amen to that, brother. You're preaching to the choir.

michale [19] -

Aha! Bro! Where ya been?

michale [20] -

Um, yeah. Because that's what this debate is all about. Chrissy's botox. [eye-roll]

Kick [24] -

Or not even scheduled in the first place. The irony here is thick -- a lot of these guys rose to power from the angry Tea Party townhalls of 2009 and 2010, and now they're too chicken to face their own constituents? It is to laugh.

nypoet22 [27] -

...and so (obviously) does Trump. [cue: rimshot]

Heh.

Ah good.
And the new link worked... thank you.

I didn't think so.
But it could have been... ditch the status quo and head for the exit... but, that sounds more like what I might say.

What do you want to bet that town halls will be cancelled all over America?

I hope not, and I also hope that they won't be mob scenes either; even dopey representatives should be allowed to speak without being set upon by peasants with pitchforks.

That said, the 'popularity' of today's GOP vote will be able to be measured immediately by the number of Congressmen you see hiding from their constituents (donors excepted).

[18] i don't think anything that moves that murderous monstrosity closer to being a law can be looked at in a positive light

Or adversity is just a door to opportunity, etc., etc.

While outrage is perfectly understandable and appropriate - after all, hanging a massive tax cut for rich folk on the backs of kids with cancer is supervillian-level chutzpah - it's also undeniable that this vote alone is like a million pre-produced campaign ads given to the opposition free of charge.

If they do manage to pass some version of it (so far, many of its provisions are DOA in the Senate), that will provide traunch of statewide adds, useful over the next six years.

Yes, it's gawdawful, to say the least. Even my Republican friends are worried about it, and all but a few aren't afraid to complain about it.

One told me today that he thought that when Trump said he would make it better, that he meant 'cheaper', not 'meaner'. I wanted to say, "And you believed that?" What I actually said was, "I know what you mean."

@balthasar,

i don't think anything that moves that murderous monstrosity closer to being a law can be looked at in a positive light. based on the scoring of the prior version, and based on the type and scope of changes that were made, if this thing ever sees the top of trump's desk then the likeliest scenario is that tens of thousands of americans will die as a result. and that's not a political football anyone on either side of the aisle should be spiking.

May the fourth be with you too, Kick.

Of course we could also call this 'opposite day', since the passage of the DontCare bill ended with the Democrats overjoyed (at having a big fat turkey to hang around the necks of opponents last year) and GOP members hoping that the bill they just passed will die in the Senate.

Next up: big gifts for Wall Street and Repeal of Dodd-Frank. Republicans are going to take some time off first, talk to constituents. That'll go well...

Your comment paints fact based realism as pessimism...

... and then you paint the truly pessimistic "let's settle for the corrupt because that's the best we can hope for" as pragmatism despite the massive electoral losses it has caused.

I think the realism of the first part of your comment is stellar, and that reality needs to be the guiding star on how to move forward... not dismissed as unproductive.
Admitting the problem is the first step after all.

It won't let me watch it.
But back at ya.

That Empire quote under the last column had a politically relevant double entendre...
as I see it anyway.
Too subtle?

It feels like I need to go to the highest hilltop and shout out "OK, have you finally got it, the GOP is not on your side, now for Pete's sake make the Democratic Party what you want it to be and let's get this country on the right track again."

Then I remember reality. All we will do is con a different group of voters into thinking that their paid-for politicians are for the little guy.

This country could fall for a populist like early-Chavez if the rich and powerful keep acting like frenzied kleptomaniacs.

PESSIMIST MODE OFF

Back to being pragmatic - living the art of the possible - messy but the only alternative to a bloody revolution from an efficacy perspective.

I found the "regular order" particularly funny...

I think you are being to melodramatic.... Under donTcare we all get free proctology exams....whether or not, we like the GOP version is a different story... In either case we will get something for free under the GOP plan.

Now please take the two fingers ( charges for lube and rubber gloves extra)...

Pert 2

Medicare and SS regularly poll over 85%, so Obamacare breaking 50% remains far short.
And it's not the name that is making so many unsatisfied.

Hey CW

Great.
Now you're offering helpful advice to Trump and the Repubs in Congress?

Just kidding.

But seriously, under Obamacare, 20 million remain uninsured, around 40 million can't afford to use the insurance they are mandated to pay for due to deductibles and copays, and about a million per year are forced to declare bankruptcy despite having Obamacare coverage.

Instead of trying to prevent harm by Repubs, though admirable, the best defense is a good offense and Dems should be on it.

Did you happen to see the Chris Hayes joint interview with Bernie and Perez?
Where Perez refused to answer questions repeatedly and dodged like an amateur in order to avoid the wrath of Big Money donors to the Dems?

Jimmy Dore, who nobody else here seems to like but whose monthly views are soaring, did a great piece on it, but I'm sure it's available elsewhere... and it doesn't need the commentary from a comedian to be cringe worthy.

Perez is awful, and you shouldn't assume that Democrats will actually use "campaign commercials that write themselves".
