fourthed?

if the election goes republican, i will accept the result as legitimate. however, the senate holding the supreme court in limbo until next january's swearing-in would still be an unacceptable breach of public trust. the next president will probably already get the chance to appoint two or three justices, and he or she should not get an extra due to parliamentary stalling.

Of course, the obvious question has yet to be asked..

Why didn't anyone (notable exceptions noted) condemn these supporters when they did this at Trump rallies???

Thanks Chris -- fella's :-)

I'll let you know if/when I'll do more Chris! Was up quite late last night and early today and am in a really foul mood over this Bernie thing. So not a good day to make decisions.

No doubt the sun will soon come smiling through...

"Personally, I find all of these comments (even the clueless ones) fascinating."

Or as Spock and Amanda would say from Star Trek IV:

Spock: "Humans make illogical decisions."
Amanda Grayson: (Proudly) "They do, indeed."

"How about Paula's Anecdote of the Week as a new part of Friday Talking Points?"

Thirded... if that's even a word :-)

Just wanted to publicly thank Paula once again for all her efforts. We all need to be reminded constantly that we are not the norm in America -- most people pay little attention to politics, sometimes tuning out until the final weeks of campaign season. Even then, a large portion of the electorate is woefully uninformed, but their votes count exactly the same as ours.

I had to cringe at that one bit about "Wasn't Bill her father?" personally. I mean... hoo boy... really?!?

In any case, if Paula's still up for it, I'd be happy to make this column a regular feature for the rest of the election season. Personally, I find all of these comments (even the clueless ones) fascinating.

Thanks again, Paula! Well done!

White House Watch: Trump 42%, Clinton 37%

Clinton's numbers are sinking fast...

Yes, this far out, poll numbers don't mean much..

And yes.. Clinton has yet to turn her full attention on Trump...

And yet, with those caveats, Democrats just HAVE to be thinking to themselves...

"OH SHIT!!!"

Which brings me to the question de jour...

All things being equal... If Trump wins the election will ya'all go on record right now and say that you will accept the will of the people??

Yep. Once again this incident was handled badly from all sides. Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things or is it just a show to get people to waste time while the real problem (Congress) slips under the radar.

Yes

Went for the joke... :D

Seriously, the problem is political Partys themselves...

More accurately, it's when Party loyalty supplants national loyalty...

People should be AMERICANS first and Democrats/Republicans second...

But that's not the way it works for the vast majority of Americans...

Party loyalty is often at odds with National loyalty and people choose Party over country..

That's exactly why I vote for PEOPLE and not Party....

He's been letting nastiness build up for some time -- he's been encouraging and/or refusing to discourage irrational and unjustifiable Hillary-hatred, while feeding the perception that members of the Democratic Party are just cheating him right and left. He has been harvesting Republcan anti-Hillary smears, which I think is just really, really low. And now he's making excuses when his supporters scream really foul stuff, especially mysoginistic stuff at women. He has created an environment where that behavior is deemed acceptable. And he acknowledges no responsibility.

Shouldn't Hillary condemn her supporters for invoking the GOP's position on Voter ID???

Shouldn't Hillary be gracious and give the Bernie supporters their due without acting like a blatant Republican???

"You don't have proper ID.. Sorry, your vote doesn't count. Too bad, so sad, take a hike..."

I mean, honestly... Am I wrong here???

Further input on the Bernie/Violence issue...

Clinton can afford to be gracious... If she lost Nevada, it would have meant the different of MAYBE 2 Delegates... She would have gone to Philly with 14 Nevada Delegates instead of 16 Nevada Delegates... Which would not have made a SINGLE IOTA of difference in the nomination...

So, it would have been easy to let Bernie supporters have their win...

But Nevada Dem officials bought and paid for by Hillary Inc choose to invoke VOTER ID to shut down Bernie supporters and then shut down the convention when Bernie supporters were rightly upset....

IMNSHO, the ENTIRE debacle could have been avoided if not for the greed and collusion of Hillary and the Nevada State Dem officials...

So, when the get to a State Party Convention and THEIR candidate is the winner and that win is nullified because some of the Bernie delegates DON'T HAVE PROPER ID!!!!!....

Turn it around..

Hillary loses Kentucky SOLELY because some of her delegates didn't have proper ID...

I would wager that Hillary supporters would have acted EXACTLY like Sanders' supporters acted...

If Clinton and her supporters are going to adopt methods that the Left accuses the Right of using for the exact same reasons that the Left accuses the Right of having, then logically, that makes Clinton and her supporters no better than what the Left accuses the Right??

Am I wrong??

Regarding Bernie's lack of response..

Try to look at things from the perspective of Bernie supporters..

They have been told for years and years how Democrats are against Voter ID and against Voter Disenfranchisement.

EVERY VOTE SHOULD COUNT they have been told and told and told over again.. VOTER DISENFRANCHISEMENT IS BAD!!! they have been fed from day one...

So, when the get to a State Party Convention and THEIR candidate is the winner and that win is nullified because some of the Bernie delegates DON'T HAVE PROPER ID!!!!!....

Well, how would YOU feel???

As ya'all can surmise, I am not on Bernie's or Bernie supports' side... But I DO see their point..

And I am sure ya'all can to, if ya can get past the politics and look at the human side of things..

Paula,

I agree that it is disappointing that Bernie chose to respond in the manner that he did. I do think that both of the candidates have to be beyond exhausted at this point with their schedules and the pressure they are under. I also wonder just how honest the handlers and campaign inner circle members are with the candidates. Are they "yes" people who keep the candidates in a little bubble of their own making at this point of the campaign? I want to create an business that deals in reality for its clients. An advisor who is paid specifically NOT to be a "yes man". This job would be perfect to work with not only political candidates, but also child stars and anyone else who has so much wealth or fame that they are constantly surrounded by asp kissing people trying to please them!

[1] Post-convention: yes, I may do more. We'll see. I just want this primary season to be over. I am heartsick over this Bernie thing in Nevada -- I simply can't believe how inept/tone-deaf/irresponsible his response was. It doesn't matter if the events were confused or exaggerated or there are discrepancies, he should have made a clear, unequivocal statement of condemnation. Instead he sandwiched a boilerplate statement between excuses/rationalizations and implied the DNC/Hillary had shot at his office. AND he threw in debunked claims about his delegates not being accepted, etc.

I read elsewhere that Bernie is surprised that there's so much fuss about all of this. I suppose it's possible he's just misreading or underestimating the reaction. I didn't want to conclude anything immediately but his response was just so bad and he's had 24 more hours to do damage control but it seems he's doubling down.

I started out literally at 50/50. Over time I gravitated to Hillary, but I still felt good about Bernie. No more. I thought he'd offer something positive at the convention, but now we have to worry he's going to incite Trump-types to raise hell and scream obscenities. I don't trust him anymore.

One of the things about these ghastly protracted campaigns is that they do, ultimately, produce tests. I think he's been failing some of the quizzes, and when a more significant test arose, he flunked.

Nicely done!

Your adventure into "man on the street" reporting took me back to a time when it was more of the norm to get reactions from the man on the street vs the current norm of keeping the large corporate advertiser happy.

It might be worth a post convention foray...just to see how things have changed.
