Paula,

You make a very valid point about how Biden would look if he chose a Republican to be his running mate in 2016. Politically speaking, 2016 is not 2008, after all, and in many more ways than one.

If Biden enters the race, I'll be looking forward to trying to persuade you to support him!

Elizabeth: Thank you for your reply. I guess we'll just have to see what he offers by way of a platform should he enter the race. But in all honesty I don't think he would do himself any favors by selecting a Repub as a running mate, or announcing his intention to do so. I think it would utterly backfire on him. At this point in time, with Donald Trump shining a big bright light on the lunacy of the Republican Party, the very best outcome is for that party to either split in two or be consigned to the wilderness for 30 years. They do not deserve the compliment of being asked to share the ticket; they do not deserve the confidence -- they have not earned it -- quite the opposite. I think it would make Joe look out-of-touch and even disloyal, given how poisonous the Repubs have been to Obama.

Paula,

Separately, would you mind sharing just what it is you find so compelling about Biden? Beyond the fact (which I agree with) that he seems like a nice guy and has been around a long time.

Being a nice guy and having a lot of experience isn't exactly what I would call compelling, number one ... and, number two, I'm glad you asked!

I could go on at great length in answer to your question and you can be sure that I will, should he announce his candidacy.

For, now, allow me just a few generalities.

First off, I'm into US foreign policy and so it's no surprise that when my interest began in earnest circa 1987 I started following the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and its very compelling chairman/ranking member Joe Biden. I soon became a big fan of his foreign policy thinking and of his mantra, oft repeated, that America is at its best when it leads not only by the example of its power but by the power of its example. I trust his judgement. Which is not to say that I always agree with him.

I like the fact that Joe Biden really is an authentic politician who still believes that politics is an honourable profession. He refuses to succumb to the cynicism that has swept over the political and media culture.

A Biden quote from the inside cover of his book, Promises to Keep, is salient: Nearly forty years after I first got involved, I remain captivated by the possibilities of politics and public service. In fact, I believe that my chosen profession is a noble calling.

I have always known Biden to be completely honest, fair-minded, and willing to get into the trenches to make a positive difference. Chris described Biden as being coy by not finally announcing, one way or the other, if he will run or not. Coy is an adjective that I would never, in a million years, attach to Biden.

As I say, I'll offer up a much more comprehensive account of why I support a Biden candidacy if and when he announces his third run for the presidency.

Paula,

You reference America's political disfunction often, and it exists, but it exists because the repub party has radicalized NOT because the Dems haven't tried hard enough to get along.

I agree. The Republican party of today is most decidedly NOT your father's Republican party, as they say. And, if the Republican party doesn't change then it may well be on the road to oblivion. Watching how they have acted, particularly since the inauguration of Obama/Biden in January 2009, I have had to conclude that this Republican party puts its own self-interest high above the national interest. It has often seemed as if they don't even know what is in their own best interests.

But, I did say that Biden might choose a Republican not currently holding public office ... meaning quite a different Republican than could survive in the party today.

Elizabeth: if Joe Biden was idiotic enough to announce that his VP would be from the Republican party I can guarantee you he would be commencing his third (or is it fourth?) losing race for POTUS. And deservedly so as it would be a serious misreading of where things are at now.

Political bigotry at it's finest.. :D

The "lets reach across the aisle" stuff has been shown -- entirely due to the intransigence of the Repubs -- to be an utter waste of time. You reference America's political disfunction often, and it exists, but it exists because the repub party has radicalized NOT because the Dems haven't tried hard enough to get along.

Really?? Like the time Dems said they would put GOP ideas into TrainWreckCare??

Trying like that?? :D

Also skipping speculation about his electability as that's not substantive. After that -- what is it you think he would offer in terms of plans for going forward that should make me -- a Hillary and Bernie fan --- prefer him?

Separately, would you mind sharing just what it is you find so compelling about Biden? Beyond the fact (which I agree with) that he seems like a nice guy and has been around a long time. Also skipping speculation about his electability as that's not substantive. After that -- what is it you think he would offer in terms of plans for going forward that should make me -- a Hillary and Bernie fan --- prefer him?

But if you FORCE someone to sell you something, you are confiscating...

But hay, I am a fair guy..

If the government wants to pay me $5K for each of my guns, I would GLADLY sell them.. No force needed...

I could use an extra couple hundred grand.. :D

Well, you know Michale, when Biden last ran for president he was asked in one of the debates who he would choose to be his vice president.

Without missing a beat, he answered expansively by saying that he would choose Chuck Hagel AND would seriously consider Dick Lugar for State.

I hasten to add that I think Chuck Hagel is better suited to a vice presidential role than to the office of the Secretary of Defense which he held for a couple of years in the second term of the Obama administration.

It would not be a surprise to me if Biden would announce early, not too long after he enters the race - if he enters the race - that a Republican would be his choice and likely not one currently serving in public office.

If Biden did that, THAT would tell me that he is serious about working WITH Republicans...

And THAT would definitely be an incentive for me to vote for him..

Michale,

I'm pretty sure that he would not select Elizabeth Warren to be his running mate but, she may be offered a prominent role in his administration - something that would put her expertise to good use.

It would not be a surprise to me if Biden would announce early, not too long after he enters the race - if he enters the race - that a Republican would be his choice and likely not one currently serving in public office.

It could be thought of as a unity or fusion ticket and might, if electorally successful, go a long way toward being able to get things done and start chipping away at the unprecedented dysfunction that has characterized the political culture in the US for too long.

Yes you are wrong. I did not know that a gun buy back program was the same as confiscation.

You didn't???

Australia's Buy Back program was a FORCED program, which is the program that Hillary wants for the US..

Now, I realize that the Party that needs to define what the definition of "IS" is might have a problem with what words actually MEAN..

But if you FORCE someone to sell you something, you are confiscating...

Has any presidential candidate ever announced before being nominated who he would select as his running mate?

Good question.. Not really sure..

What I'm really asking is if Biden does enter the race how might selecting a running mate early in the process impact on his chances for winning the Democratic nomination.

If Biden announced his candidacy and said that Warren was his designated VP, I think it is safe to say that the Left would collectively lose the frakin' minds and kick Clinton to the curb faster than you could say "Old Rhymes-With-Witch"!!

:D

Michale,

...just a little revision to that last comment ...

The vice president will enter this race on his own timetable, if he enters at all. His decision will be exceedingly personal and based on principles and values that have nothing to do with the Clinton campaign or what the Democratic party or others see as what the appropriate time frame for such a decision should be.

This is just one of the reasons I have always admired Senator Biden

Mopshell,

Why are you saying that Trump blamed GWB for 9/11 when all he did was to point out that GWB was president at the time of 9/11? This asserting that Trump said what he clearly did not say seems very unfair to the man.

This is very simply Trump, the ultimate simpleton, doing what Trump does best. What is just as non-serious is the lame attempt to act as Trump apologist.

So now the Turd Blossom is just an irrelevant troll desperately pleading for attention by trolling the commie with personal comments? Haha. Rove actually looks like one of those troll dolls from the '60s. You have to be very generous just to call him "unattractive". He really should've paid one of those venomous Fox Babes to take that shot.

Ooooo now the Democrats find themselves in a quandary.. :D

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3277402/Smoking-gun-emails-reveal-Blair-s-deal-blood-George-Bush-Iraq-war-forged-YEAR-invasion-started.html

Democrats now have the perfect opportunity to re-bash Bush again over the Iraq War issue...

But, to do so, they have to admit that Hillary DID have classified (SECRET) information on her homebrew private insecure bathroom closet email server..

AND Democrats will have to admit that Hillary LIED continuously when she claimed over and over and over that she did NOT traffic in classified information on her homebrew private insecure bathroom closet email server..

Poor Democrats.. What to do, what to do... :D

Why are you saying that Trump blamed GWB for 9/11 when all he did was to point out that GWB was president at the time of 9/11? This asserting that Trump said what he clearly did not say seems very unfair to the man.

By mentioning it in the context he did, Trump was clearly stating that Bush shares responsibility for 9/11...

Which, I guess if you look at it a certain way, it IS factually accurate...

Just as it is, in a certain way, factually accurate that Clinton (Bill) shares some responsibility for 9/11...

Put it another way... If I am off on an Obama rant and I mention that Obama was POTUS when the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre occurred, one could come to the conclusion that I was blaming Obama for the school massacre...

Michale,

Why are you saying that Trump blamed GWB for 9/11 when all he did was to point out that GWB was president at the time of 9/11? This asserting that Trump said what he clearly did not say seems very unfair to the man.

Anyway, the media are onto it (not that it will help at all since they all have their own agendas dictated by their billionaire owners) but at least Think Progress has a handle on the crux of the problem:

On Friday, Donald Trump generated substantial controversy when he asserted that George W. Bush was president at the time of the 9/11 attacks.
“When you talk about George Bush, I mean, say what you want, the World Trade Center came down during his time,” Trump said. “He was president, O.K.?”

Was George W. Bush president on September 11, 2001? It’s time to settle this once and for all.

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2015/10/17/3713554/guide-to-whether-george-w-bush-was-president-on-911/ for the full article with the conclusion they came to in their investigation.

Remember how ya'all said that Democrats were NOT talking about gun bans or gun confiscation??

Well, Hillary Clinton just put that BS to rest..

When asked about Australia's gun confiscation program, Hillary said, “I think it would be worth considering doing it on the national level, if that could be arranged”

So, can we drop the BS line that the Democrat Party is NOT about gun confiscation...

Because it's clear that THAT is *EXACTLY* what the Democrat Party is all about...

Am I wrong??

Speaking of conspiracies . . . wRong Paul (R) testified this week in his grandson-in-law's bribery trial and tried to blame it all on The Government. That's right. One Republican campaign (wRong Paul) bribed an Iowa politician and another Republican campaign (Michelle Bachmann) publicly complained because they had bribed him first, but it's all just The Government persecuting the Paulcult again. Rant Paul must be stopped or something.

Trump was right to demand that the next debate be limited to two hours, but he should have gone further and demanded that they limit the show to five contestants. JEB has demonstrated that he belongs at the pity debate with Pataki and Santorum. Trump trolled him with a self-evidently true statement about King George W's disastrous reign and the best response that JEB can come up with is a self-evidently false statement like "My brother kept us safe"? Loser.

Black lives matter. And the reason -- the reason those words matter is the African-American community knows that on any given day some innocent person like Sandra Bland can get into a car, and then three days later she's going to end up dead in jail, or their kids are going to get shot. We need to combat institutional racism from top to bottom, and we need major, major reforms in a broken criminal justice system in which we have more people in jail than China. And I intended to tackle that issue. To make sure that our people have education and jobs rather than jail cells.

Oh puulleeeze... Sandra Bland KILLED herself.. That is the start and finish to that story..

Apparently, SHE didn't think that her own life mattered..

But speaking of "Black Lives Matter"??

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3276378/Mother-accused-throwing-baby-girl-sixth-story-window-ran-daycare-apartment.html

Tell me again how black lives matter??? Where are the BLM racist morons when this little black girl was brutally murdered?? Oh, that's right. There wasn't a white cop to blame anything on so the racist BLM didn't show up..

Let's face the facts.. Black lives ONLY "matter" when their deaths can be used as a racist bludgeon to beat people over the head with..

Institutionalize racism is dead... Not ONE SINGLE PERSON can find even a SCINTILLA of factual or relevant evidence that institutionalized racism exists..

NOT..... ONE..... SCINTILLA....

Like EVERY other Democrat Party bugaboo, Global Warming, Gun Control, etc etc...

You take politics out of the issue and there IS no issue...

After two seemingly-endless Republican debates, this week the Democratic candidates for president finally got their turn to face off against each other on national television. While the audience was smaller (since Donald Trump was not on stage), it was still a lot bigger than most political debates in the past -- over 15 million people watched on CNN, and a further million livestreamed it. This is up from the usual audience of 2-to-5 million, it should be noted, from years past.

And yet, MORE people watched NCIS :D

As to the comments??

Well, I am sure glad we can have enlightened discussions and not stoop to ridiculous name-calling, eh?? :D

LizM -

C'mon, don't be a tease... give us a link!

:-)

My wife is better than I am at Tolkien arcana, so I didn't even venture a guess. I'd call Rove a "Warg" just because I like the sound of it rolling off my tongue, but then what do I know?

Heh.
