Being a nice guy and having a lot of experience isn't exactly what I would call compelling, number one ... and, number two, I'm glad you asked!

I could go on at great length in answer to your question and you can be sure that I will, should he announce his candidacy.

For, now, allow me just a few generalities.

First off, I'm into US foreign policy and so it's no surprise that when my interest began in earnest circa 1987 I started following the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and its very compelling chairman/ranking member Joe Biden. I soon became a big fan of his foreign policy thinking and of his mantra, oft repeated, that America is at its best when it leads not only by the example of its power but by the power of its example. I trust his judgement. Which is not to say that I always agree with him.

I like the fact that Joe Biden really is an authentic politician who still believes that politics is an honourable profession. He refuses to succumb to the cynicism that has swept over the political and media culture.

A Biden quote from the inside cover of his book, Promises to Keep, is salient: Nearly forty years after I first got involved, I remain captivated by the possibilities of politics and public service. In fact, I believe that my chosen profession is a noble calling.

I have always known Biden to be completely honest, fair-minded, and willing to get into the trenches to make a positive difference. Chris described Biden as being coy by not finally announcing, one way or the other, if he will run or not. Coy is an adjective that I would never, in a million years, attach to Biden.

As I say, I'll offer up a much more comprehensive account of why I support a Biden candidacy if and when he announces his third run for the presidency.

I agree. The Republican party of today is most decidedly NOT your father's Republican party, as they say. And, if the Republican party doesn't change then it may well be on the road to oblivion. Watching how they have acted, particularly since the inauguration of Obama/Biden in January 2009, I have had to conclude that this Republican party puts its own self-interest high above the national interest. It has often seemed as if they don't even know what is in their own best interests.

But, I did say that Biden might choose a Republican not currently holding public office ... meaning quite a different Republican than could survive in the party today.

Without missing a beat, he answered expansively by saying that he would choose Chuck Hagel AND would seriously consider Dick Lugar for State.

I hasten to add that I think Chuck Hagel is better suited to a vice presidential role than to the office of the Secretary of Defense which he held for a couple of years in the second term of the Obama administration.

I'm pretty sure that he would not select Elizabeth Warren to be his running mate but, she may be offered a prominent role in his administration - something that would put her expertise to good use.

It would not be a surprise to me if Biden would announce early, not too long after he enters the race - if he enters the race - that a Republican would be his choice and likely not one currently serving in public office.

It could be thought of as a unity or fusion ticket and might, if electorally successful, go a long way toward being able to get things done and start chipping away at the unprecedented dysfunction that has characterized the political culture in the US for too long.
