Major Major’s father was an outspoken champion of economy in government, provided it did not interfere with the sacred duty of government to pay farmers as much as they could get for all the alfalfa they produced that no one else wanted or for not producing any alfalfa at all. He was a proud and independent man who was opposed to unemployment insurance and never hesitated to whine, whimper, wheedle and extort for as much as he could get from whomever he could.

Sounds like a Democrat politician....

Come to think of it, it sounds like a Republican politician as well..

Politicians, whether they be Democrat or Republican, will do what's in their own best interests despite whatever political rhetoric they are spewing at any given moment??

In addition to the TAX THE RICH example, I can also point to Obama's castigation of, then love affair with, SuperPACS and the Citizens United ruling..

You can't castigate Republicans for doing what Democrats also do...

Well, you CAN, of course.. :D

Name me one Republican who has ever called for getting rid of (or even lessening) farm subsidies.

Name me one Democrat who has written an extra check on their own to Uncle Sam after calling for the rich to be taxed more..

I know you are loathe to admit it, but it DOES work both ways.. :D

Jospeh Heller said it best. From Catch-22 (emphasis mine):

Major Major’s father was a sober God-fearing man whose idea of a good joke was to lie about his age. He was a longlimbed farmer, a God-fearing, freedom-loving, law-abiding rugged individualist who held that federal aid to anyone but farmers was creeping socialism. He advocated thrift and hard work and disapproved of loose women who turned him down. His specialty was alfalfa, and he made a good thing out of not growing any. The government paid him well for every bushel of alfalfa he did not grow. The more alfalfa he did not grow, the more money the government gave him, and he spent every penny he didn’t earn on new land to increase the amount of alfalfa he did not produce. Major Major’s father worked without rest at not growing alfalfa. On long winter evenings he remained indoors and did not mend harness, and he sprang out of bed at the crack of noon every day just to make certain that the chores would not be done. He invested in land wisely and soon was not growing more alfalfa than any other man in the county. Neighbors sought him out for advice on all subjects, for he had made much money and was therefore wise. “As ye sow, so shall ye reap,” he counseled one and all, and everyone said, “Amen.”

In other words, you got nothin'.

Heh.

Name me one Republican who has ever called for getting rid of (or even lessening) farm subsidies. You know, all those moochers of federal money, which the GOP panders to by showering them with dough in order to create good little GOP voters.

Entitlements were supposed to be a temporary helping hand..

Now it's a way of life for TOO many people..

They have gone from 24% in 1963 to 59% in 2013..

Make the populace dependent on Democrats and people will continue to vote for continued enslavement..

And when the majority of the voters start to see thru the plan, then Democrats simply mint millions of fresh new voters..

Transfers of benefits to individuals through social welfare programs have increased from less than 1 federal dollar in 4 (24 percent) in 1963 to almost 3 out of 5 (59 percent) in 2013. In that half-century, entitlement payments were, Eberstadt says, America’s “fastest growing source of personal income,” growing twice as fast as all other real per capita personal income. It is probable that this year a majority of Americans will seek and receive payments.

Bleyd,

Is there a problem with wanting to ensure that everyone has enough food to eat and the capacity to own a means of transporting themselves to and from work (which would help with the food item)? If it's a good/popular idea, why abandon it?

There is nothing wrong with a helping hand up..

But Democrats are pushing a perpetual hand-out in lieu of good honest work...

There is EVERYTHING wrong with that..

TS,

More like Frak baby frak. How long the debt loaded frakers can keep afloat in a $1.99 market remains to be seen.

Yea, I hear ya... The predictions are all over the board..

Bleyd,

Is there a problem with wanting to ensure that everyone has enough food to eat and the capacity to own a means of transporting themselves to and from work (which would help with the food item)? If it's a good/popular idea, why abandon it?

There is nothing wrong with a helping hand up..

Entitlements were supposed to be a temporary helping hand..

Now it's a way of life for TOO many people..

Make the populace dependent on Democrats and people will continue to vote for continued enslavement..

And when the majority of the voters start to see thru the plan, then Democrats simply mint millions of fresh new voters..

Both Mitt and Jeb have access to big money. The difference is that Mitt actually owns a pile of money he can take out of the bank, while Jeb has ask friends and colleagues for it.

Advantage Mitt.

The political fundamentals seem to favor the Dems in 2016 about as much as they did in 2008 and 2012. The cluelessness plus big pockets of Mitt may be enough secure him the nomination in a bad cycle.

If the Republicans are going to re-brand themselves as economic populists of the 97%, they will have to do it after the primaries, where Cruz Control will be a big factor. State vs national politics.

Obama gave a rousing speech last night (I posted my own snap reactions to it on my site, if you're interested). He called for a middle class agenda that pretty much any Democrat could get behind, at least in part. It was very easy for him to do so, since there were so many good ideas to choose from.

No.. It was very easy to do because he simply rehashed everything he said in his previous SOTU speeches...

Democrats have no new ideas beyond a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage and more obamaphones and more food stamps..

THAT is the Democrat's "plan"...

And the rich get richer and the poor and middle class get poorer...

Same ol same ol...

But at least I get to pay $1.99 for gas!! :D

Thank the gods for DRILL BABY DRILL!!!

Given a choice between one candidate who gets you (who you'd like to have a beer with, who's from your part of the country, whatever) but has absolutely no policy ideas other than giving your boss a tax cut -- and another candidate who seems as though she probably went to Yale law school, and has a bunch of wonky policy white-papers that supposedly will help you but you don't understand how -- for normal voters it isn't even a choice. Nothing about that has changed.
