Paula -

Personally, I liked his detective agency's "holistic" billing system (like adding in the cost of sipping rum drinks in the Caribbean as costs for finding a lost cat).

Yeah, I re-read them a lot too. Funniest British author I've ever read, with the only exception possibly being Tom Sharpe...

Chris (2):

I love the Dirk Gently novels and really, really wish Douglas Adams had been able to do more of them. While I also very much enjoyed the Hitchhikers series, I also think the Dirk Gently's are even better. I re-read them periodically because I find the writing so entertaining and beautifully done.

I loved the I-Ching calculator that can add anything up to 4 and responds to anything after that with "a suffusion of yellow". Priceless!

I still say follow the money. Unfortunately we won't be able to do that until after all of the finance filings are in.

I believe that at the end of the day we will see the true impact of McCutcheon by the more moderate tone and the groups openly dumping money into "middle of the road" candidates and using less of the "tea party" organs to get the money into the election system.

If you look at the "peak" of the big money tea party movement, which is pre-McCutcheon, it really was the only way for some people to get in the action as the groups were only more than happy to take your money and hide just how much you were giving.

As for Cantor, aside from the fact that you can't really fix jerk, I will go out on a limb here and suggest that despite the overwhelming proof that politicians really don't give two whiskers about the electorate you still have to act like you care about the electorate, mostly just at election time. Cantor completely ignored his constituency not just in the off election cycle but during the election cycle. I think that once the general election is out of the way and the finance forms are in for Cantorland we will see that he proved that ole' axiom of ignoring the electorate at your own peril. I vote that Cantor's loss becomes the outlier for this election cycle.

Excuse me, now I really must go in search of some crumpets....

General comment to all:

OK, I am almost out of my summer car problems horrorshow, hopefully tomorrow will deal with most of the rest of the problems.

I apologize for not paying much attention to answering comments, and I've gone over this week, as partial atonement. I will try to do better here in the future, promise!

:-)

In any case, check out columns back to Monday for fresh commentary...

Pastafarian Dan -

Well, slap me in the face with a noodly appendage -- you're right!

And I just had a conversation with the wife about Long Island ice tea about two days ago (I have to admit, while blushing profusely), while watching a rerun of "The Big Bang Theory" (Sheldon had a few of these before telling off Wil Wheaton).

So I really have no excuse for the omission. I offer, as a mea culpa of sorts, the words of the immortal philosopher Homer Simpson:

"D'oh!"

The only one I can think of that you missed is the popular "Long Island Iced Tea".
And I have to agree about open primaries. And also about our (WA's) top two primary/general election system.

Michale -

In open primaries, anyone can vote for anyone. I actually like open primaries, but I'm not a big fan of CA's new "top two" general election scheme.

As for that sentence you quoted at the end, not long, not long at all. The first paragraph's the one I really worked on! Tried to think up all the tea phrases I could without cheating and using Google.

Anyone else read either of the Dirk Gently books? They're hilarious -- much better than Hitchhiker's Guide, in my opinion...

<I>Dark murmurings were heard that the "Democrats stole our primary" and other such sour grapes. </I>

Oh come now...

I seem to remember a WHOLE buttload of Democrats screaming to high heavens about alleged plans for Republicans to sabotage....

<B>" Four hundred years ago on the planet Earth, workers who felt their livelihood threatened by automation, flung their wooden shoes, called 'sabots' into the machines to stop them. ...Hence the word 'sabotage'."</B>
-Valeris, STAR TREK VI, The Undiscovered Country

.... Democrat primaries.

I'm just sayin'....

<I> the Tea Partiers decided it'd be a good idea to send their own "election observers" to Democratic districts, just to keep an eye on things.</I>

AS DID the NAACP......

I would say something about a pot and a kettle, but I don't want some certain Weigantians to blow a gasket... :D

<I>The Republican Party as a whole has a clear goal for the 2014 general election: winning back control of the Senate.</I>

And there doesn't seem to be much of a hope that Democrats can prevent this...

<I>Meanwhile, in the one race they all thought wasn't worth investing any money in, the sweet tea flowed from the grassroots to David Brat. The brew (or brouhaha, perhaps) in Cantor's district was a lot more satisfying to the voters, </I>

How long ya been working on THAT little bit o prose??? :D
