"Start with the mindset that their viewpoints might be EQUALLY as valid as yours, and until you understand their life, their experiences, and their whole history, you cannot dismiss their way of thinking out of hand. They are just as much a product of their experiences as you are, my friend, and until you understand that, we're just wasting time. Facts can be right or wrong, but opinions are very personal and individual."

Too-MAY-toe, Poe-TAY-toe :D

Agreed, however. That's my beef with a lot of the Left. They just cannot possibly even CONTEMPLATE that they MIGHT be wrong..

To be fair, many on the Right are the same way...

That's why it's obvious that political devotion is much like religious devotion...

Why do ya think there is that old saying about not discussing religion AND politics??

Both equally invoke a passion that borders......

"Peter? Oh, he was border line for a while.... Then he crossed the border."

Michale -

Here's a free tip for that author and anyone else who might want to actually LISTEN to what the other side has to say...

Start with the mind-set that THEY might be right and YOU might be wrong...

Until one can concede that, there is NO hope of understanding anything except one's own chosen religion...

I hear you, but I'd put it slightly differently.

NJ to San Diego? OK, what'd you see along the way? Which route? Route 66? Oh, sorry, you're not THAT old, are you?

Heh. Seriously, though, I am also a sucker for roadtrip stories, so do tell...

WA to FL is kind of interesting, because it kind of cuts across the Interstate grain. There are a lot of E-W routes, and a lot of them match up with the Northeastern cities. In other words, lots of NE-SW routes. But I've noticed, not as many in the other (NW-SE) routes. So what'd you see on this trip?

Anyone else? I love roadtrips and roadtrip stories!

But you just elected (and re-elected) your first ever black President and anyone with half a brain could've seen this would lead to some conflicts between New American and Old America - given the history of race in your country.

I am further constrained to point out that that POTUS that we elected (that you apparently are in love with) doesn't HAVE "half a brain"....

Also, you seem to be hung up on the race issue.

Strange, because it's a bona fide and proven fact that institutionalized racism against any race but white people effectively died in Nov of 2008...

Institutionalized racism against the Caucasian race is alive, well and growing stronger...

One only has to look at the likes of racists like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and their access to the levers of power to know that this is true...

First of all, I'm sure you mean in America (there is plenty of reconciliation elsewhere).

Of course, I mean America... We *ARE* the center of the universe, after all... :D

But you just elected (and re-elected) your first ever black President and anyone with half a brain could've seen this would lead to some conflicts between New American and Old America - given the history of race in your country.

And therein lies the problem..

The OLD America was neighbor helping neighbor..

The NEW America is ME FIRST AND SCREW EVERYONE ELSE...

I LIKE the Old America..

ntually the lunatic, nut-jobs will die down and sensible Conservatives will rise up in the GOP. This is the pattern in most countries. For America, it's only a matter of when, not if imo.

The problem there is you view "sensible" conservatives as anyone who agrees with you..

Those aren't conservatives. Those are simply ditto-heads residing in the Echo Chamber..

The Left and the Right pursue a religious-esque ideology, oblivious to everything save their own dogma...

No reconciliation is possible because no one wants to go against their "god"...

Whether that god is Barack Obama or Grover Norqhist..

Totally disagree. First of all, I'm sure you mean in America (there is plenty of reconciliation elsewhere). And even in America you will go through peaks and troughs. Sure, there is hyper partisanship in America just now. But you just elected (and re-elected) your first ever black President and anyone with half a brain could've seen this would lead to some conflicts between New American and Old America - given the history of race in your country.

Eventually the lunatic, nut-jobs will die down and sensible Conservatives will rise up in the GOP. This is the pattern in most countries. For America, it's only a matter of when, not if imo.

Having got all the political baggage out of the way, I have to concur on the "road trip" phenomenon...

It's a blast!!

I have taken 2 cross country road trips in my time..

One was the westward southern route from Red Bank, New Jersey to San Diego, California.

I was 16 or so and with my parents, so that pretty much sums up the entire trip..

The 2nd one was in 1997 when me and my family (myself, my wife, 3 kids (10, 13 and 15) and our Rottie) drove from Oak Harbor, Washington to St Augustine, FL taking the northern route in this:

I gots to get to the shop, but I'll go into more detail later..

It was EPIC.. :D

Sad as it is to say, I doubt we are going to see any reconciliation between the Right and the Left in our lifetime..

This is due solely and completely to the fact that the Left has found religion...

http://townhall.com/columnists/derekhunter/2013/12/08/in-government-we-trust-the-progressive-religion-n1759231/page/2

Back in the day of the TRUE liberal, before it gave way to the "progressive", the Left ostensibly had the moral high ground..

When I was a kid, the Left PREACHED. And, back then, the Left actually had the moral authority to do so..

But, as I am fond of saying, one can only be kicked in the teeth for so long before they come to the realization that, "This shit sucks and will stop NOW!!!"

The Left finally woke up that turning the other cheek just ain't going to cut it any more and they took the playbook from the Right and adopted it as their own..

I can't say I blame them. The Left was bullied and browbeaten and their only response was to give up more daisies...

No, I don't blame the Left for becoming simply a mirror-image of the Right in ALL it's... ahem... "glory"...

MY beef is that the Left STILL tries to shroud themselves in the blanket of the moral high ground when it's clear they have no basis, no authority, to do so..

"Lucifer... you are my brother, and I love you. But you are a great big bag of dicks."
-Gabriel, SUPERNATURAL, Hammer Of The Gods

The Left is now as much a "great big bag of dicks" as the Right is...

The author of the Salon article is a perfect case in point. He started out all high and mighty and was going to "talk to the enemy" and see what made them tick..

My GUESS is that he couldn't put his own ideological bigotry in the closet long enough to approach the right with ANY semblance of an open mind.. This is evidenced by the way he describes Ryan and Bachmann..

Here's a free tip for that author and anyone else who might want to actually LISTEN to what the other side has to say...

Start with the mind-set that THEY might be right and YOU might be wrong...

Until one can concede that, there is NO hope of understanding anything except one's own chosen religion...
