You're wrong. A cartoon of the group with the caption "what's their name finally make it", or something equally frivolous; appeared a few months after the record was a hit. I had the issue, and if you watch the right YouTube version the video shows that cover plus many more.
As for Dr. Hook dying, it was the BAND, not an individual member...the guy with the hat wasn't Dr. Hook, no band member went by that name. I'll try to post the link to the video with the picture of their cover appearance.

The group "Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show" (I think, that's from memory) wrote the song to make a point.

The point is (read the lyrics, or listen to them) that no matter how successful a rock star you may think you are, you simply have not "arrived" until you've been on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

Actually, I believe RS refused to put Dr. Hook on their cover (probably knowing they were being trolled, to put it one way). Even when he died a few years back, they still refused to put him on the cover. Bummer, man.

RS has always done journalism, often times the journalism others won't touch. Hunter S. Thompson's "Gonzo journalism" led the way, in many respects.

Anyone read "Firestarter" by Stephen King? At the end of the story, the girl takes her story of the massive government screwup to (again, from memory) "the only journalistic source in America that isn't afraid to print the truth." The last page has her walking in to the New York office of Rolling Stone.

Just last year, a RS story ousted the US commander in Afghanistan. RS does indeed still do great journalism.

Around 1973(?), a group called Dr. Hook recorded the song, "On the Cover of the Rolling Stone". One of the lines was, "gonna buy five copies for my mother". Cute, and a classical one-hit wonder. Try looking for it on Youtube, its a fun tune. The song actually got Dr. Hook on the Rolling Stone cover :-)

Personally I think we ought to figure out how much it costs the House to repeal Obamacare & start complaining about wasteful Government Spending.

My favorite comment so far (I thought about working this in to the column, but then had second thoughts...) was:
