A strategically important US intelligence bonanza resulted indirectly from the US invasion.

A Mitsubishi A6M (Zero) fighter raiding Dutch Harbor was damaged by small arms fire and made a forced landing on a small island about 25 miles away. The landing surface was muddy and the airplane flipped over, killing the pilot, but the airplane did not catch fire and remained mostly intact. Accompanying Japanese fighters did not strafe the wreck.

Americans visited the crash site about a month later and salvaged the Zero, which was shipped to the US and made flight worthy. Tests conducted in the fall of 1942 affected the design of the US Navy F6 Hellcat, which entered combat about one year later. The US was confident the high powered, well armed and well protected F6 could dominate the Zero.

Much closer to the Alaskan mainland, the town of Dutch Harbor was bombed as well.

I know Dutch Harbor well. My son works on fishing boats in Alaska and is based in Dutch Harbor.

I got plenty of Dutch Harbor sweatshirts. Funny how you never see a "DUTCH HARBOR" t-shirt.. :D

Excellent commentary, CW.. You are quite the teacher.. :D
