Obama's been offering the exact same thing for almost two years now. Anyone who tells you Obama hasn't offered up entitlement cuts before is lying.

Obama hasn't been so specific as to state exactly WHAT he was going to cut. He and the other Democrats offered vague "oh yea, we'll make some cuts" time and time again...

And Obama has never EVER stated that he would cut Social Security and Medicare specifically..

I am surprised he stated it, since Pelosi and Reid et al have specifically stated that those programs would NEVER see any spending cuts.

Time will tell if we are looking at a real and sincere offer or just more vaporware..

Michale [12] -

Obama's been offering the exact same thing for almost two years now. Anyone who tells you Obama hasn't offered up entitlement cuts before is lying.

And yes, indeed, the Republicans have walked away from it on multiple occasions. So I guess that makes them... hey, you said it, not me.

nypoet22 -

One difference in the LBJ graphs is that they come from a single polling source (Gallup) whereas Obamas come from multiple sources, averaged out. This explains some of the jerkiness to the earlier graphs.

if you look at the comparison charts, what i found most interesting is the similarity of patterns between obama and LBJ. although obama's numbers seem to have fluctuated slightly less, i wonder if that's more due to the changes in polling than differences in public opinion. the pattern over the course of time seems nearly identical. i wonder what similarities in their presidencies might account for the pattern...

Finally!!!

Finally Obama is seeing the light..

WASHINGTON — President Obama next week will take the political risk of formally proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget in an effort to demonstrate his willingness to compromise with Republicans and revive prospects for a long-term deficit-reduction deal, administration officials say.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/05/us/social-programs-face-cutback-in-obama-budget.html?partner=MYWAY&ei=5065&_r=0

If this is real and not just smoke and mirrors, the GOP would be morons not to go along..

If this comes to pass, maybe Obama's numbers won't be all gloom and doom as I predicted..

Now, over the next couple of months, we’ve got a couple of issues: gun control. (Applause.) I just came from Denver, where the issue of gun violence is something that has haunted families for way too long, and it is possible for us to create common-sense gun safety measures that respect the traditions of gun ownership in this country and hunters and sportsmen, but also make sure that we don’t have another 20 children in a classroom gunned down by a semiautomatic weapon -- by a fully automatic weapon in that case, sadly.
-President Barack Obama

Once again, Obama ignores the FACTS in pursuit of an agenda based on lies and fear-mongering..

And no one (but me) says "BOO"....

Amazing....

Or ... how come they don't seem to be willing to pay any taxes towards reducing it?

I am ALSO constrained to point out that Republicans have ALREADY agreed to taxes to help reducing the deficit..

That agreement was ALSO that there were to be some voluntary spending cuts to go along with it.

To date, those voluntary cuts have failed to materialize..

So, I think the question is NOT "why aren't Republicans willing to agree to taxes to reduce the deficit."

They ARE willing to agree.. They HAVE agreed to taxes... So that is not the question.

The REAL question is, "How come Democrats aren't willing to entertain some real voluntary spending cuts to reduce the deficit??"

THAT is the question that SHOULD be asked...

I have always asked myself (no, really! I have :D) why Obama's advisers don't take him aside and say, "Look Barry. I know it's fun and all to hob-nob with the stars and play the big shot, but ya gotta realize how bad it looks to every day Americans who are suffering..."

Then it occurred to me..

Obama has surrounded himself with "advisers" who have the exact same privileged entitled attitude that Obama himself has..

It's another sign of bad leadership..

Surrounding yourself with advisers who think EXACTLY like you do means you'll never get the straight story and will always be in a protected bubble..

Obama's entire presidency is a case study in just such a bonehead move...

If Republicans are so concerned about the deficit, how come they don't offer to take a 5% pay cut?

I assume you are referring to SecDef Hagel's symbolic gesture to return 5% of his pay. A gesture that Obama followed suit on..

While I applaud the demonstration of leadership it is, in Obama's case, a very hollow gesture, considering all the perks that Obama and his family still indulge in while requesting that Americans "tighten their belts" and "share in the sacrifice"..

If Obama wants to show some REAL leadership, why doesn't he forgo the lavish vacations, the celebrity hob-nobbing and the extravagant star-studded parties???

Betcha don't have an answer for that one, eh? :D

The only other possibility for Obama to gain back some job approval will come this Friday, when the March unemployment figures are released. March was a pretty good month, economists are saying, so if the data is positive, it may help Obama in the upcoming budget battles, and with general public approval.

Don't think Obama can expect help from the Job Market.

Jobless Claims are up 28,000...

Weekly Jobless Claims Get Weaker as Outlook Dims
http://www.cnbc.com/id/100615845

As far as spending goes?? Before we had a half a million dollar study to see why lesbians are generally fatter...

NOW we have a half a million dollar study on "Proper Condom Usage"...

Net Jobs: ZERO

But, don't forget. April is Teach-A-Teenager-Fiscal-Responsibility month.. :^/

It would be hilarious, if it wasn't so sad...

Now let me ask you why Obama is still throwing star-studded extravaganzas at the taxpayer's expense while still not resuming White House Tours??

The answer is the same.

April may provide much better political ground for Obama, however. The big debates in Congress are going to shift from the endless budget wrangling to putting two other issues on center stage: immigration and gun control.

I don't think Obama can expect a bump in the polls from his anti-gun push...

You KNOW Democrats are in trouble when the ACLU comes out against Obama's signature Anti-Gun legislation...

White House throwing star-studded concert despite sequester
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/04/03/white-house-throwing-star-studded-concert-despite-sequester/

Not enough money to have school kids have their White House Tours, but PLENTY of money for the Obamas to hobknob with the stars...

I can just imagine the re-action around here if it was a GOP White House under these conditions..

But, since it's a Dem, the Marie Antoinette Let-Them-Eat-Cake mentality from our POTUS/FLOTUS seems to be just fine.... :^/

Not enough money to have school kids have their White House Tours, but PLENTY of money for the Obamas to hobknob with the stars...

I can just imagine the re-action around here if it was a GOP White House under these conditions..

" but as the budget cuts bite, you don't hear that much anymore.

They did?? Where??

Oh that's right. Obama still has the White House tours cancelled despite the pleas of school children to re-start them..

Whatta guy....

The only thing that stabilized in March was the number of undecideds, which actually fell from 5.8 to 5.2 percent.

Which means, coupled with the other numbers, that more people figured out that Obama is a crappy leader...

About the only good thing you can say about Obama's poll numbers in March is that he's still "above water" -- but only barely, by a 2.2 percent margin -- since his approval, for now, is holding above his disapproval.

Which may have been true at the end of March.. But, 2 days later, Obama was officially underwater.. My guess is it was the audacity of THIS particular POTUS claiming that April was "Teach Teenagers Fiscal Responsibility" Month...

You simply cannot make that stuff up...

On guns, Obama is losing public support overall as time distances Americans from the Newtown tragedy.

And the fact that Obama is using miniscule polls from two decades ago to support his bullshit Gun Control arguments.

Why is it that everyone around here will fact check a Republican to hell and back when he/she takes a dump, but Obama can spew out Pinocchio after Pinocchio and no one here says squat?? Hmmmmmm???

For reasons stated in the previous commentary, I think your wrong about Obama not following Bush. Obama has too many negatives against him.

Most notably ObamaCare which, as more and more of it is implemented, we are finding out that it was not as it was promised. Instead of lowering costs, it is raising costs. Instead of increasing quality care, it is decreasing quality care. Instead of being able to keep your healthcare plan, we are being forced to move to other plans...

As more and more of it is revealed, ObamaCare may prove to be as devastating to Obama's remaining months in office as the Iraq War was to Bush's remaining months..
